ST. – The "simple seamstress" from rural Switzerland Marguerite Bays was born on September 8, 1815 in Switzerland. She was a seamstress and dressmaker: a simple, devout, and cheerful woman. With her love of service, she strongly idenfied with the charism of St. Francis of Assisi, and she joined the Secular Franciscan Order. She became a catechist and established in her parish the "Associaon for Holy Childhood". At age 35, she was miraculously cured of her intesnal cancer. She received the sgmata at age 38; every Friday, she experienced the pain of Christ's Passion while entering into a myscal state of ecstasy. She died on June 27, 1879 at the age of 63. She was beafied on October 29, 1995 by Pope John Paul II.

ST. IRMA DULCE PONTES – The Good Angel of Brazil Maria Rita de Souza Brito Lopes Pontes was born in Salvador de Bahia, Brazil on May 26, 1914. At the age of 13, she began caring for the poor and the sick in her own home. Graduang from high school with a teaching qualificaon, she began her new life with the Missionary Sisters of the Immaculate Concepon of the Mother of God (SMIC). When she made her vows, Maria took the name Dulce in memory of her mother. Because of her overwhelming love for the poor, she helped found the area’s first Chrisan labor union and opened a public school for workers and their children. Her most lasng legacy is an organizaon called the “Charitable Works Foundaon of Sister Dulce,” founded in 1959. It specializes in healthcare, educaon, and scienfic research. It serves more than 3.5 million people each year, and is open to a broad range of people in need: the elderly, homeless, children and adolescents considered “at risk”, vicms of addicon, and people with disabilies and deformies. In 1988, Dulce was nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize. She died from respiratory failure on March 13, 2011. Her passing was mourned by the people of Brazil, who call her the “Mother of the Poor” and the “Good Angel of Bahia”. On May 22, 2011, she was beafied with papal approval by Cardinal Geraldo Majella Agnelo.

ST. JOHN HENRY NEWMAN – Patron of Seekers From a conversion to evangelical Protestansm as an adolescent to his early adulthood as an Anglican priest and Oxford don to his maturity as a Catholic, Oratorian, and priest, Cardinal Newman never stopped searching for truth, and shaping his life around the truth that he found. Born in London on February 21, 1801, he grew to become a theologian and a poet. Originally an Anglican priest, he converted to Catholicism in 1845 and his wrings are considered among some of the most important Church‐wrings in recent centuries. Ordained a Catholic priest in 1847, he was made a cardinal by Pope Leo XIII in 1879, although he was not a bishop. His conversion to Catholicism caused him the loss of friends and family members. For years aer his conversion, he was also widely distrusted by the Catholics of England, so receiving the cardinal’s hat in 1879 was a real vindicaon of his life’s work. For him, truth had a human face – that of Christ – and was incarnated in love. His sermons spoke about good people who lead virtuous lives – but not out of love. His faith was enfleshed by love; only love was an adequate move for virtue, and love leads the Chrisan to a new way of life. The Brish cardinal founded the Oratory of St. Philip Neri in England, and was parcularly dedicated to educaon, founding two schools for boys. He died in Birmingham on August 11, 1890 at the age of 89. Pope Benedict XVI performed his beaficaon on September 19, 2010. (Connued on Page 8) Page 3 TWENTY-EIGHTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION From the Weekend: September 28 & 29 Christian liturgy has always contained an opportunity to make a choice for sharing. HEALING AND SALVATION The readings today speak of healing and salvation. In Second Kings, Naaman, a commander of the army of the king of Syria, develops leprosy. He goes to a stranger, a prophet from Israel, when no one else can cure his disease. Much to his surprise, after a simple bath in the river, he is cured. In Luke’s Gospel, Jesus cures ten lepers and sends them to the priest. Only one, a Samaritan, returns to thank Jesus for his cure and only he hears the words, “Your faith has saved you.” The psalm and Timothy remind us that salvation involves justice, kindness, and faithfulness and forever links us with Jesus. In a world as broken as ours, both healing and salvation are necessary.
