p.51 BREAKING NEWS

Hello everybody,

Starting October Outhere Music will do the honour to distribute our label in the Benelux.

Then we would like to introduce you briefly Bonsaï Music.

Bonsaï Music takes its first steps in 2004 in the music industry and has been quickly catalogued as a “Jazz record label”.

However this image is a little simplistic because we believe that “Jazz” is more a musical philosophy than a specific musical genre.

For thirteen years our work consisted in reconciling jazz and popular music and then promote and release Artists albums that can be enjoyed by jazz fans and lay people with this musical genre.

The characteristics that most defines Bonsaï Music is our constant search of melody and/or great voices.

Our catalog includes about fifty elegant albums recorded with splendid Artists such as Ben Sidran, Leo Sidran, Enrico Pieranunzi, André Ceccarelli, Chrystel Wautier, Matthieu Boré, Olivier Ker Ourio, Christophe Wallemme, Musica Nuda…

In the great majority of cases those album have been awarded by the French Jazz Radio & Press (Selection FIP, Must TSF…)

Most of our albums are illustrated by videos that you can see on our YouTube channel

Stefan Temmingh is a member of the new young generation of world-class recorder players. Born in Cape Town, he comes from a Dutch-South-African family of musicians and now lives in Munich. Being an early music specialist, he plays internationally with his baroque ensemble at renowned festivals and concert series, and can also be heard as a member of ensembles of all sizes in ACC24332 Europe, Asia and Africa. His fine playing is regularly compared to the style of 1 CD - 68’40 the legendary Frans Brüggen. PPD : 12,95€ On this collaboration with the Capricornus Consort Basel, he makes use of his wide array of technical and musical resources to render a reference version of Vivaldi’s Recorder Concertos.

But the proud monarch has long since summoned Lotario, the noble German king, to her aid. The struggle for power begins... The Göttingen Handel Festival continues its close collaboration with the Accent ACC26408 label, which has already yielded great recordings of works like Siroé, 3 CD - 3H07 Faramondo, Joshua, Susanna or Agrippina. The addition to the series of this PPD : 29,00€ May 2017 recording of Lotario is without doubt a very welcome one for all Handel lovers.

Over and above his legendary career as leader of the Arditti Quartet, Irvine Arditti has worked on many solo projects and is still today one of the foremost interpreters of the music of our time. Over the past decade he has given the world premieres of a whole host of large-scale works written especially for him. His approach to the contemporary violin is fascinating. The works by Salvatore Sciarrino, Elliott Carter, AECD1755 Emmanuel Nunes and Pierre Boulez assembled in this album are among the most 1 CD - 56’05 widely known in the recent repertory for violin, both on account of the transcendental PPD : 12,95€ character of the pieces themselves and the impetus they have given the instrument’s technique, but also and above all because of the accomplishment manifest in the variety of their modes of expression. Irvine Arditti’s performance of them on this disc is masterly and already sets a benchmark.

HANDEL - Messiah 1754 Piau - Watson - Pichanick - Charlesworth - Wolf - Le Concert Spirituel Hervé Niquet Why yet another Messiah? ‘I went through the different scores that exist and decided on the very interesting 1754 version, which features five soloists. You must remember that, when Handel arrived somewhere to perform his oratorio, he had soloists of varying standards available to him. So he quickly revised his score accordingly... All this is directly related to the reality of Handel’s ALPHA362 situation as a concert promoter. In those days, to earn a living from his music, 2 CD+BOOK - 116’22 a composer absolutely had to get his works performed and make a profit on the SPECIAL PRICE evening. The idea of not retouching a work to avoid “spoiling” or “distorting” it PPD : 15,00€ is a much more modern one. There must be around a dozen versions of Messiah (I won’t list them all). The 1754 version is rarely played because it calls for five soloists: two sopranos, alto, tenor and bass... I’ve opted here for an operatic interpretation, taking its cue from the drama inherent in this account of the life of Christ.’ (Hervé Niquet)

11 VARIOUS COMPOSERS - Anime Amanti Roberta Mameli - Luca Pianca A voice, a lute, a sigh. Nothing could be simpler and more immemorial. This expression of sentiments and emotions, of the intermittencies of the heart and the shadows of the soul, is of course as old as the world. Yet it was truly a reconquest of the Renaissance. With Caccini, the ‘new music’ at once found a miraculous melodist. He composed a Euridice, performed in 1602, two years after Jacopo Peri’s setting and five years before Monteverdi’s Orfeo. The Renaissance did not know opera, but long ALPHA291 secreted that genre soon to be born. And it is brand-new opera that opens and closes 1 CD - 68’16 this recording, through the voice of its first visionary, Claudio Monteverdi. The Italian soprano Roberta Mameli is a great lover of this music, which she performs PPD : 12,95€ with an outstanding feeling for words and drama. Luca Pianca offers her his artistry and his great experience. Roberta Mameli is joining Alpha for several recordings, which will guide us towards other rarities and other periods..

DEBUSSY - RAVEL - CHAUSSON - String Quartets Quatuor Van Kuijk - Kate Lindsey - Alphonse Cemin

12 BEETHOVEN - LISZT - Complete Symphonies Yuri Martynov

ALPHA374 6CD - 363’14 PPD : 21,00€

This set brings together the five separate discs containing Franz Liszt’s transcriptions of Beethoven’s nine symphonies performed by the pianist Yury Martynov. Reducing these complex works for piano solo was an enormous challenge for Liszt, who nevertheless succeeded in recreating their prodigious character and their incredible power. ‘An event on a period piano, thanks to which we rediscover the colours... of the orchestra’ (Pianiste): the piano combines the whole orchestra, sometimes even with vocal soloists and chorus, bringing their voices together in a single instrument. The energy and the textures of the symphonies are laid bare and magnified in the interpretation of Yury Martynov on a Blüthner piano dating from 1867 and an Érard piano of 1837, both from the collection of Edwin Beunk: the ussian pianist reveals ‘details usually obscured in orchestral performances, which come to light thanks to his meticulous phrasing and colouring of every bar’ (The Guardian).

NEVERMIND

There he composed a new set of quartets that came to be called the ‘Paris Quartets’ and in which he celebrated the union of the European styles of his time, at the zenith of the Baroque. The four musicians and friends of Nevermind pursue their exuberant conversation, as virtuosic and eloquent as ever.

14 CHOPIN - Nocturnes Nelson Goerner

ALPHA359 2CD - 108’07 PPD : 17,50€

Sophisticated colourist and cerebral virtuoso though he is, Nelson Goerner nevertheless brings out the moments of weakness, the hesitations, the lightning passions in the labyrinth of Chopin’, wrote Diapason on the release of the Preludes in 2015 (Diapason d’Or, Choc de Classica). ‘Serenity’, ‘balance’, ‘clarity’, ‘phrasing’ are the key words that recur in reviews of the discs and concerts of the Argentine pianist, whose fifth solo release on Alpha this is. His latest venture is a complete recording of the Nocturnes, a highpoint of Chopinesque poetry. These twenty-one miniatures accompanied Chopin over a good part of his life, for he composed them between 1827 and 1848. They are tributes to Italian bel canto, expressing reveries but also complexity of feeling and a profundity that far transcends their apparent simplicity. Nelson Goerner’s feeling for melody and tempo works wonders in these pieces, which he recorded in the ideal surroundings of the Salle de Musique of La Chaux de Fonds (Switzerland).

The life of Stradella, murdered on a Genoese piazza at the age of forty-two on the orders of a jealous rival in love, has achieved mythical status and inspired several novels and operas featuring Stradella the adventurer, the rebel and above all Stradella the Don Juan, whose amorous escapades, from abducting a novice from a convent in Florence to a ight across Italy with the high-born ancée of a senator, were never a hindrance to ALPHA 297 his ourishing musical career. 1CD - 58’05 From the demonic Salome to Ariadne, the model wife turned into a Fury by despair; from PPD : 12,95€ Pelagia, the repentant sinner who ends her days living in a cave disguised as a man, to Susanna, the very image of innocence and purity, this programme presents a series of portraits of women whom Chantal Santon embodies in their turn with all her artistry, her intimate knowledge of this repertory and her sense of theatre.

This new album by the great pianist and composer Alain Lefèvre unveils the results of three years of hard work by Jacques Marchand, GeorgeNicholson and Alain Lefèvre aimed at restoring André Mathieu’s famous Concerto No. 3. Presented as a world premiere in February 2017 in Buffalo, the reconstituted concerto was enthusiastically received by the audience. In 2008, George Nicholson discovered the original score of André Mathieu’s Concerto No. 3 written in the Québec composer’s own hand. One of the most talented singers of the new generation brings to light four gems for soprano and orchestra belonging to the great eighteenth -century tradition of Neapoltan sacred music. The three composers are representative of as many generations of an industrious dynasty: Francesco Feo (1691-1761) was the uncle of Gennaro Manna (1715-79), who A439 in turn was the uncle of Gaetano (1751-1804). 1 CD - 52’19 Comparison between their scores allows us to observe the extraordinary development PPD : 12,95€ from the austerity of the late Baroque to the elegance of the galant style. The short and bright Gloria by Gennaro Manna crowns the programme, symbolising the final achievement of a dimension of redemption and eternal salvation. 19 VARIOUS COMPOSERS - Dresden Zefiro / Alfredo Bernardini

A438 1 CD - 77’52 PPD : 12,95€

An ensemble selected from the excellent Capelle of Friedrich August I in Dresden, the Cam- mer-Musique and its leader, the phenomenal oboist Johann Christian Richter, inspired some of the leading German composers and Italian guests at the court around 1720 to write sonatas in which oboes and bassoon are challenged with extremely expressive and virtuosic parts. This was the time and place in which the largest amount of impressive music with oboe and bassoon as soloists in history was written. German composers such as Heinichen, Zelenka (to be heard by Zefiro on ARCANA A 394), Fasch and Quantz wrote these pieces in the Italian style, with the typical alternation between singing adagios and brilliant allegros. Telemann composed a sonata with ornamentation and affects inspired by the French style. Lotti, who resided in Dres- den between 1717 and 1719, also noticed the outs- tanding skills of the court’s wind players and wrote his only solo pieces for these instruments there. Vivaldi met Richter during the latter’s visit to Venice in 1716, when he accompanied the Elector to the city, and he too dedicated some remarkable oboe and bassoon solos to the German musician. Gilbert Rowland

Gilbert Rowland is one of Europe’s most senior and accomplished exponents of the harpsichord. For this album he moves to the Athene imprint specialising now in baroque music and ‘period’ instruments. This 3-CD set presents the 12 Suites in full, uncut and with repeats observed. The tempi have not been speeded up in order to fit the program on two discs ATH23301 as has happened elsewhere. 3 CD - 74’24 Mattheson was a prodigious composer, conductor and was a friend of Handel, PPD : 24,00€ though the two did come to blows in the midst of an opera performance. His work follows the traditional ‘dance suite’ format with small variations and is a fine example of excellent baroque music which was not perhaps promoted enough in its own time and is only now once again being rediscovered and appreciated.

22 FRANCK - FAURÉ - PROKOFIEV - Sonatas

Sharon Bezaly - Vladimir Ashkenazy

The two sonatas by César Franck and Gabriel Fauré were composed with the violin in mind, and even though Prokofiev’s sonata was originally intended for the flute it is often heard in the composer’s own version for violin and piano. BIS2259 - 75’06 But joined by the legendary pianist and conductor Vladimir Ashkenazy, 1 SACD - PPD : 13,25€ Sharon Bezaly now claims (and reclaims) the three works for her own instrument, in eloquent performances that make the best possible case for the flute.

THE MUSIC BEHIND THE MUSIC / Monographic double album - Pierre-Adrien Charpy’s music is an organic multifaceted music, through which run visible strata and unsuspected crevices, enlivened by surface currents and subterranean flows. His way of composing is characterized by stratification, working the depths, renewing formal milestones, CYP2623 employing the resources of creative constraint. 2CD PPD : 21,20€ The pieces presented in the first volume of this album belong to the composer’s collection of jewellery, his etchings, his small-scale works with the delicate wash of the watercolour or the precise impasto of the paintbrush. This hour of music, a sequence of baroque, contemporary and traditional music, forms an innovative opening to the music of our time, into which some will venture who would otherwise never have dared.

MORTON FELDMAN - Triadic Memories & Piano

John Snijders

Morton Feldman’s preoccupation with what he called ‘acoustical reality’ was the primary subject of all his work but the intimate acoustic reality of the piano, the instrument at which he worked, became a particular focus during the last decade of his life. Piano (1977) and Triadic Memories (1981) sound like Feldman of course - both share that ART205 - 115’15 extraordinary sense of time sus- pended, of instrumental colour refracted 2CD PPD : 17,50€ through pitch and back again- but each also offers a radically different conception of the piano.

MORTON FELDMAN - Trio

Ives Ensemble

Feldman’s canvas contains sparse, isolated tones and commentary in an environment of heightened concern. (Concern negates the idea that Feldman’s music embodies an existential void.) Concern creates tension, energized by the composer’s sense of res- ponsibility, and desire. The music sounds familiar at times, where a motif occurs and is not forgotten, ART155 - 76’12 but returns in another place in another guise. Or multiple motifs 1 CD PPD : 11,50€ (eachinstrument’s persona!statement) are reassembled into something resembling something else, or only itself. Even Feld- man’s repetition is never exact, as there are slight shifts in weight, shade, density, inten- sity. And when, eventually, the music ends, it just ends, for no need, or reason, with no explanation, no answers..

38 GALINA USTVOLSKAYA - Trio For Violin, Clarinet And Piano

Reinbert De Leeuw - Vera Beths - Harmen De Boer Ustvolskaya’s music is dark, somber, even rem ote wh en a solitary voice holds sway. Her rejection of easily recognizable form suggests that, metaphorically, time is not a factor; as temporal references are acutely literai, the means to escape an oppressive time and place are found in spiritual, not social, values. ART194 - 58’44 Similarly, the chilling sparseness of textures becomes an emotionallandscape, scarred, sometimes painfully severe, where inner 1CD - PPD : 11,50€ strength is necessary for survival. But there is,too, especially in the duet for Violin And piano, a sanctity of mood (shared with the later Shostakovich, when he was obsessed with death, and where, in his final works u ch as the Viola Sonata and Sonata For Violin And Piano, the in uence of Ustvolskaya may be felt). ln moments like this, rare is the music where the human will is so immediate, so enduring.

STÉPHANE KERECKI - VINCENT LÊ QUANG - Modern Art

Daniel Humair, Stéphane Kerecki, Vincent Lê Quang This Modern Art CD project is an invitation to discover new ideas, and these pieces of music by Vincent Lê Quang, Stéphane Kerecki and myself are not really tributes ; I prefer to think of them in terms of correspondences, parallel ideas, encounters, affinities, out-of-the-ordinary phenomena. INC001 - 43’29 We’ve chosen several 20th century painters to give us one of two 1CD - PPD : 12,95€ possibilities : either we already had such and such a composition in our pack that matched up with the pictorial world of a certain artist, or we’ve written an original composition inspired by an artist’s work. All this in spirit rather than literally. For Modern Art is about relationships : between neighbours or others close to us, members of the same family, free associations. I’m both a musician and a painter, but I’m not trying to establish any direct link between these two art forms.

The musician of genius – a cellist, conductor, concertmaster, educator, composer and public gure – played a colossal part in the history of music art of this country and the whole world. Knowing about the range of his activities, the role of a performing soloist and a purely musical domain were too small for his mighty talent and temperament. Nevertheless, there were only few who enriched the cello literature with new works, who changed the view of solo cello art and who gave himself up to Music as he much as he did, for without Music he “could not live and could not breathe”.

50 VARIOUS COMPOSERS RED PRIEST The Baroque Bohemians Red Priest

RP014 - 70’08 1SACD - PPD : 12,95€

Telemann believed that a composer could gain a lifetime’s inspiration from gypsies’ improvisations, but exactly what gypsy music might be is hard to pin down. Whether it is Spanish, Romanian or Hungarian ‘gypsy’ tunes that we hear, musicologists from each country tell us that we are, in fact, enjoying the country’s own folk-tunes through the distorting prism of gypsy players. Jewish Klezmer music is also conflated with gypsy music: one of the earliest famous gypsy players was in fact a Jewish fiddler. The Roma themselves were recently pinned down by DNA evidence to having originated as a low caste tribe of musicians from Northern India called the Doma or Rom. Since they first appeared in 14th century Hungary, they spread through Europe, becoming must-have players for village dances, for aristocrats and for the courts. Although written source material is by its very nature limited, the Uhrovska Collecion – a Slovakian fiddler’s songbook from 1730 – provided a starting point for this disc, out of which we have explored, speculated and re-imagined the multilayered relationships between folk and court music.

VIVALDI- Between The Seasons Henning Kraggerud - Arctic Philharmonic Chamber Orchestra The extreme – wind, snow, cold, rainfall, thaw and heat – are vividly experienced in Kraggerud’s interpretation of The Four Seasons. Henning Kraggerud manages to capture the climatic range experienced on top of the world in his music-making. And there’s more – between the seasons. In Vivaldi’s day, Europe was experiencing the ‘Little Ice Age’ and the seasons in Italy were actually similar to what we experience in Norway today – a PSC1356 foundation for the powerful readings found on this album. BACH - Cage / Chorales

Julius Berger Johann Sebastian Bach’s suites for cello solo are arguably the purest form of music, works that require no explanation or background knowledge. Johann Sebastian Bach made one of his most profound affirmations, a Gradus ad Parnassum, which in six stages sets out an intellectual and technical challenge that is and will probably remain peerless in the history of music for SM270 our instrument. 3CD - PPD : 17,50€ I had always presumed so and was grateful for confirmation that the cello suites make allusions to chorales and religious messages. I have therefore found a musical way of opening a spiritual door to the suites and added chorales to Suites 1, 3, and 5 in the mould of sounds from John Cage’s work One 8, chorales that in my opinion are definitely consistent with messages conveyed in the suites. «I find that John Cage’s music shares similarities with Bach’s. His music allows for inner reflection, providing a contemplative point of calm. Cage said the purpose of music is “to cleanse the soul and bring it peace, thus making it amenable to divine ALSO AVAILABLE influences”. SMLP271 3LP- PPD : 48,00€

CHARLES KOECHLIN

The 150th anniversary of Charles Koechlin’s birth in November 2017 is marked by the reissue of all the Koechlin recordings made by the Südwestrundfunk. They are compiled in two boxed sets of seven CDs each: Box 1 – vocal and orchestral music; Box 2 – piano and chamber music. This comprehensive Koechlin project began in 2001 as a collaboration between the Radio Symphony Orchestra of SWR Stuttgart, conductor Heinz Holliger, and Otfrid Nies of the Charles Koechlin Archive in Kassel. CHAMBER MUSIC Various artists This 7-CD box of chamber works by the great French composer Charles Koe- chlin is unique in several respects: rst, there is no comparable collection of this composer's chamber music; second, most of the performers were members of the Stuttgart Radio Symphony Orchestra who became familiar with Koechlin’s works over many years; third, this familiarity produced highly relaxed and knowledgeable performances, which is naturally a huge advantage. 56 GRIEG - FRANCK - RAVEL - Piano Recital 1994

Svjatoslav Richter While there is no disputing Richter’s extraordinary technique, what set his interpretations apart was his ability to immerse himself completely into the music he performed, allowing the purity of the composer’s original vision to dominate his musical choices. Richter himself said: «The interpreter is really an executor, carrying out the composer’s SWR19409CD intentions to the letter. He doesn’t add anything that isn’t already in the 2CD - PPD : 12,50€ work. If he is talented, he allows us to glimpse the essence of the work that is in itself a thing of genius and that is re ected through him. He shouldn’t dominate the music, but should dissolve into it.» This extraordinary approach is on full display in this programme. Collectors have long regarded Richter’s performances of Grieg’s Lyric Pieces as de nitive, while his Ravel emphasises the inherent neo-classical structure underlying the virtuosic display.

The album title Asteroida is the Latin term for starfish – a creature that can regenerate parts of itself whenever need be. He combines this elemental, physical and spontaneously deployed music-making power with a finely tuned sense for artistic form. There are ethereal lone notes and powerful clusters of tones, and altogether a great deal of dynamics, scurrility, humour, drama and thoughtfulness.
