SUMMARY PAPER Estimating Age and Growth of Little Tunny, Euthynnus alletteratus, off the Coast of Senegal, Using Dorsal Fin Spine Sections PATRICE M. CAYRE 1 and TAIB DIOUP ABSTRACT Estimates of age were made from counts of growtb bands on dorsal spine sections of 491 little tunny, Euthynnus alletteratus, captured off the coast of Senegal during 1979. Analysis of marginal growtb bands (by montb) indicates that these bands are probably formed during tbe cold season (November-May). Mean size at estimated age was deter mined for tbe first 8 yr of life. These results, tbougb not validated, closely approximated other studies for young fisb (estimated ages 1-3), but were bigbly variable for older age categories. Tbe index of average percent error (E) for age nates from our study was 10.5% and infers good precision. Unfortunately, anglers have not had the in- formation they need to help them decide which fish may be safer to eat, despite the fact that recreational anglers and their families typically eat more fish than the average population. In fact, recent studies have found that people who live in coastal areas of the United States have higher levels of mercury in their blood than residents from inland areas.1 The purpose of this report is to help provide infor- mation to recreational anglers in the Gulf of Mexico on which fish may be higher in mercury than others, which would be safer to eat, and which species are in need of further monitoring. -

Age and Growth of Atlantic Bonito (Sarda Sarda) in Western Mediterranean Sea

Alot2, J.M. Ortiz de Urbina2 and J.M. de la Serna2 SUMMARY A total of 136 dorsal fin spines from western Mediterranean Atlantic bonito were analyzed from 2003 to 2006 for ageing and growth studies. The length of the aged individuals ranged from 40 to 61 cm. Fish ages ranged 1 to 3 years old and the mean lengths by age were calculated for males and females. Growth parameter estimates were calculated from 136 cut spine sections which provided readable growth annuli by sex. The standard von Bertalanffy growth function was used to fit length at- age data.The growth parameters based on standard von Bertalanffy growth function are the following for both sexes: L∞ (asymptotic length)=62.5 cm, k (growth coefficient)=0.719, t0 (age at zero length)=-1.21. The relationships between FL and dorsal fin spine diameter were calculated for both sexes. Age-length keys were provided for catch at age calculation application. RÉSUMÉ Un total de 136 épines de la nageoire dorsale de bonitous de l’ouest de la Méditerranée ont été analysées de 2003 à 2006 aux fins d’études de détermination de l’âge et de croissance. La taille (longueur à la fourche) des individus dont l’âge avait été déterminé oscillait entre 40 et 61 cm. L’âge des poissons allait de 1 à 3 ans et les tailles moyennes par âge ont été calculées pour les mâles et pour les femelles. -

Piccinetti4, F. Tinti5 SUMMARY The Italian scientists have a long tradition of studies and research on albacore (Thunnus alalunga). This species is one of the most important for the Italian fishery since many centuries, even if it was often neglected. This is the first attempt to list together the many papers published so far by Italian scientists, concerning the biology of this species, the fisheries and many other scientific and cultural issues. The aim of this paper is to provide a sort of annotated bibliography, with specific key words, even if it is surely incomplete, because of the many papers published over the years. So far, we found 164 papers on albacore. This updated bibliography was set together to serve the scientists and to help them in finding some rare references that might be useful for their work. RÉSUMÉ Les scientifiques italiens ont une longue tradition d'études et de recherches sur le germon (Thunnus alalunga). Cette espèce est l'une des plus importantes pour la pêche italienne depuis de nombreux siècles, même si elle a été souvent négligée. Il s'agit de la première tentative de répertorier les nombreux articles publiés à ce jour par des scientifiques italiens concernant la biologie de cette espèce, les pêcheries et de nombreuses autres questions scientifiques et culturelles. Le but de ce document est de fournir une sorte de bibliographie annotée, avec des mots clés spécifiques, même si elle est sûrement incomplète, en raison des nombreux articles publiés au cours des années. -

At first, raw samples of these species and a mix intended as internal control were prepared for the authentication of fish muscle tissue of the genus Thunnus sp., Auxis sp. and Sarda sp. DNA from raw muscle tissue, the mix and samples was extracted with the DNeasy mericon Food Kit (Qiagen GmbH, Hilden, Germany). The concentration and purity of DNA in raw samples were evaluated using a spectrophotometer. Primers and probe sequences were specifically designed to identify the selected species. In addition, primers and a probe for the endogenous 12S rRNA gene were designed to determine the presence of amplifiable fish (especially tuna) DNA in samples. Furthermore, the species specificity of the designed primers and probes was verified in DNA samples of various tuna and bonito species. Limit of detection for the selected species was calculated as well as the coefficient of determination R2 and efficiency of real-time PCR testing was determined. To evaluate the developed real-time PCR methods, 70 commercial tuna products were analysed. The results show that mislabelling of fish products can still be encountered and, moreover, the presence of an additional species can be identified.
