Myths and Reality
CHAPTER 3 MYTHS AND REALITY Tarot myths abound: the Greek god of communication, the messenger Hermes, has been identified with the Egyptian mystical god Thoth who is said to have “given” his name to a Tarot deck known as The Book of Thoth. Yet, there does not exist a single certain and proven origin of Tarot cards. Different sources mention variety of geographical and historical roots: in Europe in the south of France, or Italy, or Spain; in the Far East, or in Egypt. Tarot richness derives from the fact of it encompassing the elements in common with so many different cultures and ethnic groups. There does not seem to be a straight or direct line of its descent from any particular area. When exactly Tarot first appeared in its functioning form remains unknown too, even if it is understandable that it is unlikely for Tarot in its current format to manifest its presence before the invention of the printing press. The imaginary point of the birth of Tarot does not seem to have a fixed position in the space-time system of coordinates. The migration of nations throughout history could have easily caused a migration of ideas, but these ideas happened to survive amidst their movement along the globe. It seems that on several occasions during the history of humankind one or another civilization gave birth to Tarot; hence such discrepancy in opinions of where and when Tarot originated. This chapter will go through some of the cultural memory traces left in history by the ancient Hermetic tradition and revived during the Renaissance (Yates, 1964, Faivre 1994; 1995). -

They are not to be taken to imply personal or moral criticism of those today or in the past who have adopted practices or advocated reforms which are subjected to criticism. In composing these papers we adopt the working assumption that our fellow Catholics act in good will, but that nevertheless a vigorous and well-informed debate is absolutely necessary if those who act in good will are to do so in light of a proper understanding of the issues. The authors of the papers are not named, as the papers are not the product of any one person, and also because we prefer them to be judged on the basis of their content, not their authorship. The International Federation Una Voce humbly submits the opinions contained in these papers to the judgement of the Church. THE EXTRAORDINARY FORM AND THE NEW AGE: Abstract Pope St John Paul II noted that the New Age Movement rejects a ‘rationalistic religiosity’, and for this reason its adherents can find attractive the mystery, ritual, chant, of the Extraordinary Form, and its incarnational character. The Extraordinary Form can in turn help to free those attracted by the New Age from Pelagianism, by its consistent stress on our need for grace; from their spiritual subjectivism, by its objectivity; and from any connections with the Occult, by its evident spiritual power. -

March 31, 2021 Rudolf Steiner on Sophia By Robert McDermott For Debashish Banerji and Robert McDermott, eds., Philo-Sophia: Wisdom Goddess Traditions To be submitted to Lotus Books, April 2021 Abstract This essay summarizes and recommends Rudolf Steiner’s esoteric research on Sophia. According to Steiner, Sophia is a being who is close to Christ and the Holy Spirit as well as to several of the nine divine Hierarchies. In his lectures from 1906 until the year before his death in 1925, Steiner depicts Sophia as the divine feminine being who has manifested as Isis (the goddess of the Mediterranean world for three millennia), as Mary the Mother of Jesus as depicted in the New Testament, and Anthroposophia, a being who is charged with helping contemporary humanity to think freely and thereby prepare for the next advance in the evolution of human consciousness. The essay opens with the author’s slow but steady relationship to the dramatic increase in scholarship on Sophia since the last decade of the 20th century and concludes with an affirmation of Sophia as a being who embodies and manifests both wisdom and love. The essay relies on four Sophiologists influenced by Steiner’s research: Christopher Bamford, editor of Isis Mary Sophia: Her Mission and Ours—Selected Writings and Lectures by Rudolf Steiner (2003) which includes Bamford’s important Introduction; Sergei Prokofieff, author of The Heavenly Sophia and the Being Anthroposophia (1996); Michael Debus, author of Mary and Sophia: The Feminine Element in the Spiritual Evolution of Humanity (2013); and Valentin Tomberg, author of Christ and Sophia: Anthroposophic Meditations on the Old Testament, New Testament, & Apocalypse (1933-38; 2011). -

The following article first appeared in Starlight (2007), volume 7, no. 2, pages 9-12: VALENTIN TOMBERG: A PLATONIC SOUL Robert Powell, PhD A key to understanding Valentin Tomberg as a Platonist is given through his relationship with Elisabeth Vreede (1879-1943), one of Rudolf Steiner’s closest co-workers. Concerning Elisabeth Vreede, Rudolf Steiner indicated that she had incarnated earlier than planned and that she did this in order to meet Rudolf Steiner on Earth. He also saw her in connection with the Platonic stream.1 It is well known that at Plato’s Academy in Athens astronomy, arithmetic, geometry, and music were taught. Mathematics and astronomy have always been cultivated in the Platonic stream. Rudolf Steiner indicated this explicitly in connection with Elisabeth Vreede. In his lectures on Karmic Relationships Rudolf Steiner outlined how the people gathered around him belonged more to the Aristotelian stream. In this respect Elisabeth Vreede was an exception. She had incarnated earlier than planned in order to meet Rudolf Steiner. Because she came early, she had a very limited circle of friends.2 Those with whom she was karmically connected were not yet incarnated. However, upon meeting Valentin Tomberg she recognized him immediately as a significant figure from the Platonic stream and decided to actively support his deeply Christian anthroposophical impulse. She organized lectures for him and she was the person from whom it was possible to order Tomberg’s Biblical Meditations.3 She formed the bridge between the two great spiritual streams of the twentieth century: Rudolf Steiner Aristotelian stream Valentin Tomberg Platonic stream When Elisabeth Vreede was excluded from the Vorstand of the Anthroposophical Society, this meant the exclusion of the Platonic stream to which she belonged. -

Haja vista, que há uma ampla divulgação de tratados alquímicos, cabalistas, herméticos, movimento este que alcança no século XVIII uma barreira impávida do racionalismo. Desta maneira, temos aqui uma ampla e difusa produção imagética, cuja a permanência de indicadores estéticos nos permite evocar uma estetização nestes trabalhos, a partir das imagens evocadas e ilustradas que nos remetem à conceitos abstratos e alegóricos dos textos, cuja a análise dos mesmos, nos permite inseri-los no âmbito da arte. O presente simpósio visa receber trabalhos que voltem-se para os aspectos estéticos (este termo entendido de forma ampla), presentes nos múltiplos trabalhos alquímicos, herméticos, cabalistas, rosacruzes e outros do gênero, que possuam um diálogo com o esoterismo ocidental. -
