The Big Bend Chapter served as the host for the second time in its short history. This year’s event drew approximately 85 registrations with roughly 125 people attending the banquet. Thirty-two of those cars went through the judging process and there were some beauties among them. The Minhocao elevated highway case study in São Paulo/ Brazil Abstract São Paulo of the 20th century was a city built for cars. The Avenue Plan ruled how the city would grow, and consequently, how its population would live. Amongst other consequences, the city slowly lost access to public spaces and to a more humanized scale. Nowadays this situation has been facing some changes: people started to claim for new uses of the built environment engaging with concepts of spatial democracy. This paper will explore one case study within São Paulo (Brazil): The Minhocão, a soon-to-be deactivated elevated highway, and the debates involving a range of actors over the future of the structure. Considering urban land as a commodity, especially when it comes to its road system, it is difficult to separate the uses of any space without understanding them as a repercussion of the power of capital or governing influences. The main challenge is to understand how to make public spaces and the cities more democratic, and, in this sense, how to recognize the potential city spaces can have. A city that was once ruled by the automotive planning, today is repurposing itself through popular demands. But the palimpsest of an era will prevail in its landscape.

    Preston Tucker: His Car and the Men Who Helped Create It By STEVE REPERGEL Recently, I had the privilege of speaking to Philip S. Egan, author of “Design and Destiny: the making of the Tucker Automobile.” Now 81, Egan, an industrial designer, helped make Preston Tucker's dream car a reality. This story outlines my conversations with Egan, presents findings derived from his book and offers insight into the minds of the automotive geniuses who worked so diligently behind the scenes. As a highly creative individual who possessed acute visionary skills and a refined sense of business acumen, Preston Tucker was without question a successful entrepreneur long before he envisioned the Tucker automobile. Much of his success is credited to his personality---he had the talent and gift to make people believe and invest in his ideas. Preston Tucker began his entrepreneurial triumphs during World War II with inventions of mechanical design. His involvement with military staff at Washington D.C. led to contributions on the Sherman Tank, the creation of the infamous Combat Car and the Tucker Turret which was used widely throughout the Second World War His interest in automobiles, especially with regards to speed, was sparked by his close relationship with famous racecar driver and designer Harry Miller. From his associations with Miller, Tucker spent much time composing concepts of mechanical ingenuity that could be applied to the inner workings of a revolutionary automobile. It was clear, however, that Preston Tucker would not be satisfied with just selling his ideas about automobiles. He wanted to produce a vehicle on the open market that he could proudly claim as his very own.

Iacocca is born on October 15 in Allentown, Penn., to Nicola and Antoinette Iacocca. 1945 Graduates from Lehigh University with a B.S. degree in Industrial Engineering. Receives the Wallace Memorial Fellowship and enrolls at Princeton University. 1946 Graduates from Princeton with a M.S. degree and begins working at the Ford Motor Company as an engineer. Ford Motor Company 1956 Serves as manager of Ford’s Philadelphia sales district and introduces a lower down payment and easier payment schedule for customers. The districts sales go from worst-to-best in three months. Promoted to District Sales Manager. 1964 Ford introduces the Mustang – a design project spearheaded by Iacocca. Mustang is a huge success and Iacocca becomes known as the “Father of the Mustang.” 1970 Becomes President of Ford Motor Company. Chrysler Corporation 1978 Leaves Ford and is appointed President of Chrysler Corporation. 1979 The Chrysler Board of Directors elects Iacocca Chairman. 1980 Iacocca is featured in Chrysler advertising. This is the first time the head of an automaker serves as an advertising spokesperson. Coins the phrase “If you find a better car, buy it!” Chrysler introduces the Dodge Aries and Plymouth Reliant, the so-called K-cars, which are instrumental in the financial recovery of the company. U.S. President Jimmy Carter signs the Chrysler Corporation Loan Guarantee Act, providing Chrysler with $1.5 billion in federal loan guarantees. 1982 President Reagan appoints Iacocca head of the Statue of Liberty-Ellis Island Foundation.
