Introduction On the eve of the 99 th anniversary of the beginning of the mass deportations and massacres of the Armenian people, Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdo ğan offered condolences for the mass killings that occurred in Anatolia against the Armenian population during World War I. (BBC News) He is the first Turkish prime minister to do so. However, he never uses the word genocide to describe the killings and continues to maintain that the deaths were part of wartime conflict.
