two weeks of world-class music newbury spring festival 11–25 may 2019 £5 2019-NSF book.qxp_NSF programme book 23/04/2019 12:31 Page 1 A Royal Welcome HRH The Duke of Kent KG Last year was very special for the Newbury Spring Festival as we marked the fortieth anniversary of the Festival. But following this anniversary there is some sad news, with the recent passing of our President, Jeanie, Countess of Carnarvon. Her energy, commitment and enthusiasm from the outset and throughout the evolution of the Festival have been fundamental to its success. The Duchess of Kent and I have seen the Festival grow from humble beginnings to an internationally renowned arts festival, having faced and overcome many obstacles along the way. Jeanie, Countess of Carnarvon, can be justly proud of the Festival’s achievements. Her legacy must surely be a Festival that continues to flourish as we embark on the next forty years. www.newburyspringfestival.org.uk 1 2019-NSF book.qxp_NSF programme book 23/04/2019 12:31 Page 2 Jeanie, Countess of Carnarvon MBE Founder and President 1935 - 2019 2 box office 0845 5218 218 2019-NSF book.qxp_NSF programme book 23/04/2019 12:31 Page 3 The Festival’s founder and president, Jeanie Countess of Carnarvon was a great and much loved lady who we will always remember for her inspirational support of Newbury Spring Festival and her gentle and gracious presence at so many events over the years. Her son Lord Carnarvon pays tribute to her with the following words. My darling mother’s lifelong interest in the arts and music started in her childhood in the USA.

TTHHEE GGEENNEESSIISS DDIISSCCOOGGRRAAPPHHYY “The scattered pages of a book by the sea…” 1967-1996 Page 2 The Genesis Discography The Genesis Discography January 1998 Edition Copyright © 1998 Scott McMahan, All Rights Reserved The Genesis Discography Page 3 THE EXODUS ENDS “And then there was the time she sang her song, and nobody cried for more…” “I think that in the end, if all else is conqured, Bombadil will fall, Last as he was First, and then Night will come.” … from the Council of Elrond, in Lord of the Rings Indeed, since its beginning in 1993, The Genesis Discography has been a fixture on the Internet much like Tom Bombadil was in Middle Earth. It has endured in the face of the changing times, without itself changing much, isolated off in its own world. Glorfindel had the opinion that Bombadil would be the last to fall, after all else was lost, last as he was first. In Tolkien’s story, that opinion was never tested. Good triumphed over evil, and everyone lived happily ever after. Not true on the Internet. Since 1993, the forces of evil have created a desolation and oppression that Sauron even with the help of his ruling ring could not imagine perpetrating. From the days of the Internet as an academic research network until today’s Internet I have witnessed ruination unbelieveable. The decay, corruption, and runiation of the Internet boggles my mind. Like Tom Bombadil in his carefully demarcated borders, The Genesis Discography has been an island in the storm, surrounded on all sides but never giving in.

  • Programme Information
Programme information Saturday 13th February to Friday 19th February 2021 WEEK 7 SMOOTH CLASSICS AT SEVEN with CHARLOTTE HAWKINS Sunday 14th February, 7pm to 9pm To mark St Valentine’s Day, Charlotte has two hours of perfect romantic and relaxing music. Highlights include Pachelbel’s Canon in D, the piece that Charlotte walked down the aisle to, a classical rendition of ‘My Love’ by Paul McCartney and music from Craig Armstrong’s score to Love Actually. Charlotte features Tianwa Yang as her Young Classical Star. The Chinese violinist began learning to play at the age of four, and quickly moved on to the competition circuit. Yang recorded her first album at the age of 13, featuring Paganini's 24 Caprices, making her the youngest musician ever to do so. She followed that with her European debut in 2001, and since then, she has gone on to perform at Berlin Philharmonic Hall, with the Shanghai Symphony Orchestra and the Neubrandenburg Philharmonic. Classic FM is available across the UK on 100-102 FM, DAB digital radio and TV, on Global Player on your smart speaker (“play Classic FM”), iOS or Android device and at ClassicFM.com. 1 WEEK 7 SATURDAY 13TH FEBRUARY 4pm to 7pm: MOIRA STUART’S HALL OF FAME CONCERT The programme begins with Beethoven’s Egmont Overture, inspired by the composer’s fascination with Goethe’s writing, which he described as having a “great power over me”, before Vaughan Williams’s Fantasia on an Elizabethan courtly melody. Moira then moves from Greensleeves to green fingers, as she features Paul Reade’s music to The Victorian Kitchen Garden, ahead of an award winning 2020 recording of Chopin’s Piano Concerto No.1 from young star Benjamin Grosvenor; and a Mozart aria sung by Joyce DiDonato, who celebrates her birthday today.

  • Pierre Boulez Chercheur Moderne Entretien Avec FRANCK MALLET

  • Béla Bartók's Duke Bluebeard's Castle: a Partial and Personal Survey Of
Béla Bartók’s Duke Bluebeard's Castle: A Partial and Personal Survey of the Discography by Ralph Moore Bartók composed A kékszakállú herceg vára (“Duke Bluebeard’s Castle”) in 1911 for entry into the Ferenc Erkel Prize and modified it the following year for a second, music publisher’s competition; on neither occasion did he win, probably because of its essentially static, internalised dramatic nature and the cast being restricted to only two singers and brief choral interjections in the form of sighing. It certainly would not have been because of any perceived limitation in its orchestration or musical content, which is mostly polytonal and chromatic, centring the dissonant properties of the minor second. Bartók devised a new ending in 1917 and the premiere was on 24 May 1918 at the Royal Hungarian Opera House in Budapest. The libretto was written by Béla Balázs, the poet and friend of the composer, and is based on the macabre French tale La Barbe bleue by Charles Perrault. It really demands to be heard in the original Hungarian, preferably with the chilling spoken Prologue; I do love the unexpected, muscular strangeness of the language (part of the Finno-Ugric language group, hence wholly unfamiliar to anyone used to hearing opera sung in a Teutonic, Slavonic or Latinate tongue). Furthermore, lasting around an hour and with little in the way of action, this psycho-drama plays out perfectly in the mind’s eye - in my experience better than on stage or on film - so a CD of a studio recording or a radio broadcast performance constitutes the perfect format for appreciating its unique power.
