INTERVIEWS BOOSHEID MAAKTE VAN PAUL VAN NEVEL EXPERT OUDE MUZIEK JAZZNU · 9 NOVEMBER 2016 0 17 2.8K 3 Paul Van Nevel November Music telt zoals van het festival gewend, ook dit jaar weer een aantal premières. Een ervan is de opvoering van ‘Et Lux’, een eigentijds requiem van de beroemde Duitse componist Wolfgang Rihm. Het Huelgas Ensemble en het Minguett String Quartet voeren het vrijdag 11 november op in de Grote Kerk van ’s-Hertogenbosch. Beide staan onder directie van de Belgische oude-muziekspecialist en dirigent Paul Van Nevel. JazzNu ging in Gent op zoek naar deze eigengereide dirigent en ‘cigarier’. Om voor één keer niet over jazz te praten, wel over de muzieksoort die sterke verbindingen heeft met jazz vanwege het improvisatie-aspect. Voor de wereldpremière tijdens de Berliner Festpiele had Wolfgang Rihm het wereldberoemde Hilliard Ensemble verkozen. Dat voerde Et Lux – dat de componist schreef in 2009 – op samen met het al even beroemde Arditi Quartett. Noch de organisatie van het Berlijnse evenement, noch componist Rihm waren echter tevreden over de uitvoering. Waarop Paul Van Nevel telefonisch contact zocht met de componist. “Het eerste wat Wolfgang Rihm mij vroeg toen ik hem belde over Et Lux was welke sigaar ik op dit moment rookte, de San Cristobal de la Habana of de El Rey del Mundo”, lacht Paul Van Nevel, terwijl hij voor de zoveelste keer tijdens ons gesprek een vlammetje houdt onder zijn uitgedoofde sigaar. SIGARENROKER De handeling zal zich nog vele malen herhalen. Want Paul Van Nevel is naast een fanatieke sigarenroker een bevlogen prater, die zijn leven in dienst heeft gesteld van oude muziek.

It captures the exuberance of that great shout of praise. Richard Webster's arrangement of "O God, our help in ages past" is one of 45 hymn arrangements Webster has written. "Exaudi me, Domine" is a Responsory from the Mass for the Dead. Several of his choral compositions appear in the Eton Choirbook. “Antiphon” is one of Five Mystical Songs which Vaughan Williams wrote for the Three Choirs Festival in 1911. English composer Orlando Gibbons (1583-1625) was a chorister in the Choir of King’s College, Cambridge. He was Organist of Westminster Abbey when he died at age 41. In addition to singing, Knutson is a doctor of chiropractic with a private practice in the Boston area. Shira Kammen has spent well over half her life performing and teaching music. A member for many years of Ensemble Alcatraz, Ensemble Project Ars Nova, and Medieval Strings, she has also Beall Concert Hall Saturday evening worked with many other ensembles including Sequentia, Hesperion XX, the 8:00 p.m. November 6, 2004 Boston Camerata, the King’s Noyse, Magnifi cat Baroque Orchestra, Teatro Bacchino, and is the founder of Class V Music, a group created to perform on rafting trips. Along with Fortune’s Wheel, she currently works with the contemporary music ensemble, Ephemeros, and Trouz Bras, a group UNIVERSITY OF OREGON devoted to the dance music of Celtic Brittany. Robert Mealy has received much critical acclaim for his eloquent and SCHOOL OF MUSIC imaginative performances on a wide variety of historical strings: he performs around the world on baroque violin, renaissance violin, lira da braccio, and GUEST ARTIST SERIES medieval vielle and harp. With not just one but two performances of the Vespro della beata Vergine in the monastery of Sant’Anna in Camprena, Collegium Vocale Gent will pay a fitting tribute to its composer Claudio Monteverdi, who was born exactly 450 years ago. Fue el año de la caída de Granada, momento en que los Reyes Católicos, Fernando e Isabel, sacaron a España del ámbito de influencia islámica después de siete centurias de dominación musulmana. Y fue también el año del descubrimiento de América por Colón. Si en los siglos XIV y XV eran las escuelas polifónicas franco-flamencas las que marcaban el tono en la música europea, el siglo XVI asistió al apogeo no sólo de Italia sino también de España en el panorama musical. Aun así la música renacentista española permaneció durante mucho tiempo y por causas varias un poco a la sombra de la italiana. Entre otras razones, el régimen de Franco postergó considerablemente la divulgación del patrimonio musical español y el movimiento de música antigua echó a andar con relativa tardanza en España. En 2008 ese retraso se ha recuperado por completo, hasta el punto de que el Festival de Música Antigua de Utrecht, a lo largo de sus diez días de duración, puede dedicar sin esfuerzo el 90% de sus conciertos –es decir, más de cincuenta eventos de la cartelera principal– a la polifonía renacentista hispana. El Festival gira en torno a los Siglos de Oro, puesto que el Renacimiento no se limita al siglo XVI, sino que continuó sonando en España, y por tanto también en la América hispana, hasta bien entrado el siglo XVII.
