He started his apprenticeship at the Beaux-Arts of Parma, under the supervision of Paolo Toschi. During his three learning years, Alberto Pasini specialized in landscapes painting and then mainly composed drawings and lithography. In 1851, the political situation of Italy pushed the young twenty years old Pasini to leave for Paris. There, he met Eugène Delacroix, Gabriel Decamps and many other painters from the Barbizon school. During his first participation to the French Salon of Art in 1853, he exhibited a lithography named The evening that was soon to be noticed by Théodore Chassériau who offered him to join his studio. There, he reinforced his oil painting technique, and most importantly showed an eager interest for orientalist subjects. Then, in 1855, Chassériau proposed him to replace him in a journey in Persia along with French diplomat Prosper Bourée. The painter stayed there for two years and received numerous orders from the Shah. Pasini was captivated and mesmerized by the warm lights, the colours full of shades and the clothing. He thus decided to continue his discovering of the East. He travelled to Egypt, Saudi Arabia, Syria and Constantinople. His several journeys awaken a true passion for the East that will become in the course of time the core of his pictorial work. Pasini unrelentingly depicted picturesque scenes with a photographic accuracy. His works were very popular among the audience and his talent was praised by the critics. Some even compared him with the prominent orientalist artist Eugène Fromentin. Appointed by the French ambassador Prosper Bourée, Alberto Pasini went once again to Constantinople in 1867 and stayed there for nine months. Then, in 1869, the Sultan Abdul Aziz of Turkey commissioned four paintings, offering him the opportunity to remain in the country for a while. Whilst being a traveller painter, he set up his studio in Paris. His participation in the French Salon of Art was successful and he received there a gold medal in 1878. Napoleon III honoured him with the Legion of Honour while king of Italy awarded him with the Order of Saints Maurice and Lazarus in 1879. In the aftermath of the Franco-Prussian war, plenty of Italians that were perceived as Prussia's allies seemed to be no more welcomed in France. Alberto Pasino made no exception and in 1879 he purchased a small farm near Turin which soon became his refuge between his journeys in the East or in Spain. He still brought with him a horde of memories which allowed him to continue and create sublime works in his Cavretto studio. This painting features the architectural style of the painter, for one can recognize a street of Cairo. The artist indeed drew his inspiration from the Ibn Tulun mosque, the most ancient one of Cairo. The building is also the most ancient Islamic monument of the country. Alberto Pasini depicts the spiral minaret which reminds the great mosque of Samara. Behind the mosque is the Saladin fortress, completed in 1857. This fortress is one of the greatest monuments of the 19th century belonging to the Mameluk period style. The scene thus takes place in the Al-Khudayri Street, Cairo, in a slightly high area from the Sayda Zaineb district. In the foreground, one can see characters in a bustling little street, all dressed with traditional clothing. Horses and stallholders meddle in the scene. European Art & Old Masters: 500 Years (1624) February 27, 2019 EDT Lot 14 Estimate: $25000 - $40000 (plus Buyer's Premium) ALBERTO PASINI (ITALIAN 1826-1899) THE BLACKSMITH'S COURTYARD Signed 'A. Pasini' bottom left, oil on canvas 9 5/8 x 7 5/8 in. (24.4 x 19.4cm) Provenance: Private Collection, Pennsylvania. NOTE: Although trained at the Academy of Fine Arts in Parma, Italian-born artist Alberto Pasini moved to Paris in 1851 to refine his technique. There, he befriended other artists including Eugéne Fromentin (1820-1876), Jules Dupré (1811- 1889) and Théodore Rousseau (1812-1867), all of whom contributed to the development of his palette and plein-air philosophy. In 1853, the artist was admitted to the Paris Salon, which enabled him to join the workshop of the famous painter Théodore Chassériau (1819-1856), who introduced him to Orientalism. When Chassériau was too ill to accompany Ambassador Nicolas Prosper Bourée (1811-1886) on a diplomatic mission to Persia in February 1855, Pasini replaced him, thus embarking on the first of many journeys to the East, including memorable stops in Turkey and Egypt. Back in Paris, his artistic qualities were quickly acknowledged. His dazzling depictions of bazaars, market places and mosques made him a fortune, and he earned several honors such as the Légion d'Honneur in 1878. Of Pasini, critic Virgilio Colombo said: "[He] faithfully reproduces the architectural accessories, which sparkle in the sun and bathe in the blue shadows: in this, he is unrivaled and shows extraordinary ingenuity to create huge painting in small canvases. What skill in painting (...) thoughtful knights, with sumptuous trappings, damask-decorated weapons, kiosks, market and military camps, the intimate recesses of the harem, the profiles of city with jagged spires and minarets (...) The oriental scenes are exquisitely treated." Featured in the present lot are four gentlemen caring for their horses at the blacksmith's shop.

P Paál, László (Zám 1846 - Charenton 1879). Studiò all’Accademia di Vienna. • Circassian Cavalrymen Outside a Gate Pen and Brown Ink and Brown Wash
Alberto PASINI (Busseto 1826 - Cavoretto 1899) Circassian Cavalrymen Outside a Gate Pen and brown ink and brown wash. Signed and dated A. Pasini .80. at the lower left. 264 x 349 mm. (10 3/8 x 13 3/4 in.) [sheet] This is a depiction of a type of subject that Alberto Pasini treated in paintings, drawings and lithographs throughout his career. (Indeed, in 1880 - the date of this drawing - he exhibited a large canvas entitled Cavaliers circassiens, attendant leur chef à la porte d’un monument byzantin at the Salon des Artistes Français in Paris.) Pasini’s interest in Circassian soldiers as subjects for his paintings is a reflection of a fascination for these singular people shared by many visitors to the Near East. The term ‘Circassian’, derived from the Turkish word ‘Çerkes’, has long been used to refer to the peoples of the Northwestern Caucasus, notably the Adyghe, the Abkhaz and the Ubykh. With the Tsarist Russian conquest of their territory in the first half of the 19th century, many Circassians were deported to Turkey, where Pasini would first have seen them. A fierce people with a warlike ethic, greatly admired for their courage in battle, many Circassians became military leaders in Turkey, the Middle East and Russia after the diaspora. Circassian men wore a cherkessa; a long, fitted coat with pockets for ammunition cartridges across the chest, together with a round fur hat and knee-high leather boots. Their exotic appearance was described by one 19th century visitor to the region; ‘I was first struck with their fine martial appearance, athletic forms, regular features, and the proud consciousness of freedom displayed in every glance and movement.
