" Last Moments of Chlodobert; (IS8o. ) " Dante meeting Matilde. " (1881. ) "The Out- L'Attentat cast. " (1882. ) d'Agnagni. (Of the nine Popes who have borne the name of Boniface, none is more prominently historical than Boniface VIII., previously maned Benedict Cajetan, it native of Agnani, who was elected to the Pontificate on the eve of Christmas, 1264. The unbounded pride and ambition of this priest were flattered to the highest pitch of human worship at the ceremony of his installation, when two crowned kings held the reins of his horses its he pro. ceeded to the Lateran, and afterwards served him at table. He attempted to assert a feudal supremacy over Sicily; and to exercise his papal influence in settling the disputes between France and England. The French king, Philip the Fair, resisted the authority of Boniface ; and supported by his States and clergy, maintained the independence ofthe kingdom, setting at nought the many bulls and briefs which the Pope fulminated against him. The sentence of excommunication wits even disregarded by Philip, who at last, with the aid of Italian enemies of Boniface, compelled him to fly from Rome, and to seek refuge at Agnani. Twenty-nine charges were brought against the imperious Pontiff, by the Etats Gcnereanx con- voked by Philip; and among the accusations were assassination, heresy, simony, and licentiousness. In point of fact, Boniface had seized on the triple crown and keys of St. Peter, deposing Pope Celestitto V., and confining hint in it dungeon. If all, or half, the charges brought by Philip the Fair against Boniface be true, Dante was quite ju-tified in giving him a place in his Inferno, where the Pope is classed among the Simonists. When driven to Agnani by the energetic French ]sing. Pope Boniface endeavoured to fortify himself against the udwances of his enemies, bend the chief of whom was Selarra Colonna, at that time of most celebrated and powerful of all the Roman aristocratic families. Supported by the armed emissa- ries of the French king, who were charged with the execution of the sentence pro- nounced by the States, Colouno pursued the aged Pope-he was 86 years old-to the steps of the Pontifical throne. is This the scene M. Maiguan has here so vigorously depicted. At the top of the stairs, between the ttvo shrine- which flank the Papal chair, stands Boniface, clad in his white mantle of St. Peter, wearing the crown of Constantine, and hold- ing the keys and cross. Infallible and inviolable, its ltc. deems himself, the Pope bears himself with erect end defiant majesty. Below hint are the assailants, to whom lie is reported to have said, "Here is my neck, here is my head; strike I But CATALOGUE OF PAINTINGS. 2t

I will die Pope !" In the attitude of Colonna, a suggestion may be read of linger- ing respect and awe; but he is still bent on the fulfilment of his purpose; and the legend states th'it he dragged Boniface from his position of authority, and struck him in the face with his gauntlet. The helpless, but still dauntless Pope, was not killed, as was i Becket, in the Sanctuary; but was cast into prison : and though two days afterwards, lie was liberated by the people of Agnani, lie died within a month, having refused food, lest he should be poisoned. ) THE MUSEUM, Presented by Wallis & on, London,

BY WILLIAM T. RICHARDS.

Presented by Rev. E. L. Magoon, D. I).

Mr. Richards, while spending the summer of IS7o at Atlantic City, made several water-color sketches as notes for oil paintings. Some of the sketches being seen by Dr. E. L. Magoon at his first interview with the artist, the present collection was then and there begun. Since that time new pictures have been added as fast as the artist's time and the purchaser's resources would permit. The two friends traversed New Hampshire and the New England coast to- gether, choosing favorable subjects and depicting only actual scenes. At the first three exhibitions of the Water-Color Society in New York, the artist reluctantly allowed his friend to exhibit specimens of his work, but he has never pushed his own work into prominence. He did not even know of the present donation until after it was made
