Gutjahr -

APPROVED BY MEMBERS OF THE THESIS COMMITTEE: Fronz , Langbamm~mnan ~ . Linda B. Parshall Louis J. Elteto In thi's thesis an attempt is made to show the ::peculiar features of Fontane's narrative style as well as his art of characterization. I have tried to interpret his concept of humaneness in the two novels, Unwiederbringlich and Effi Briest, and to show how the composition of these novels is directed to the portrait of the individual. Theodor Fontane 1 s unusual distinction lies in his keen observation of the Prussian scene and his craftsmanship as a cosmopolitan story- teller. The principal elements of his works are a sense of historical continuity and an uncommon perception of the speech and gestures by which his characters reveal their particular virtues. -

The introduction sets out the thematic concerns which I wish to explore in Fontane's and Flaubert's fiction. It also incorporates a review of previous comparative literature which has focused on these two authors. Part I contains five sections, one from each of the novels I wish to discuss (Schach von Wuthenow, Madame Bovary, Irrungen, Wimmgen, L'Éducation sentimentale and Effi Driest). Each section depicts moments of crisis and intense inwardness on the part of the characters which are analysed according to the criteria outlined in the introduction. The basic issue in each case is the same: what is the status and nature of these seemingly private moments? Part 11 develops the issues raised in the close readings: i. -

Multistep Oxygen Therapy (EWOT) - the Best Ant-Aging Gift You Can Give Your Body
Multistep Oxygen Therapy (EWOT) - The Best Ant-Aging Gift You Can Give Your Body Written by: Rober Rowan MD; Read more at www.docRowen.com. Also read about Ozone in Sierra Leone and Vaccines at FaceBook.com/DrRobertJRowen. In the never-ending fight against the aging process, we have finally found a therapy that now gives us the edge. It can dramatically reduce the effects of the aging process from your body, it costs very little, and it can be done in the comfort of your own home. The therapy is called EWOT (exercise with oxygen therapy) or multi-step therapy. You’ve read about it in the past, but that’s just the beginning of what will be one of the biggest breakthroughs ever in anti- aging medicine in decades, and yet it’s still virtually ignored by the medical establishment. Why? Probably because it doesn’t cost much, so the doctors and drug companies aren’t going to get rich using it. But I suspect most are simply in the dark about the incredible benefits you can receive using this therapy. I know I was for many years. As an avid user of oxidation and oxygen therapies, I was fortunate to attend a lecture on oxygen multi- step therapy at the International Oxidative Medicine Association’s convention years ago. However, it was presented in poor English without a clear understanding among the attendees of the mechanisms of action. Like most physicians, I need to know how something works to better apply it to patient care. Just hearing results without understanding is not satisfactory. -

Box 1346 Ann Arbor, Ml 48106-1346 ABSTRACT Critical orthodoxy tends to perceive Thomas Mann as an intellectual or cerebral writer; and, in consequence, it is often argued that he is interested not in individual characters as convincing, engaging, human entities, but rather in stereotypical figures who embody certain values or attitudes. And - so the argument runs - this limitation is particularly evident in respect of the women figures. The publication of the diaries has led critics to invoke his latent homosexuality as further evidence for his inability to create credible women characters. This thesis seeks to challenge this orthodoxy by arguing that time and time again Thomas Mann’s women figures challenge - or, at the very least, call into question - the stereotyping that is foisted upon them by their socio cultural context and lay claim to a measure of human autonomy. -

Yanacek 2016 iii FEELING DIFFERENTLY AT THE FIN DE SIÈCLE: REPRESENTATIONS OF EMOTION AND CULTURAL CHANGE IN GERMAN LITERATURE, 1890-1901 Holly A. Yanacek, PhD University of Pittsburgh, 2016 This dissertation examines the representation of emotion in German literature of the fin de siècle, which I identify as a period of rapid cultural change when emotional codes and social mores were disputed. Compassion, honor, shame, love, pride, and pity were topics of contested public and intellectual debate around 1900, and I argue that the renegotiation of these emotional codes happened in part through literary works and other media. Building upon Bakhtinian discourse analysis and informed by current history of emotions research, my dissertation contributes the theoretical concept ‘heteropathia,’ which I define as the co-presence of differing ways of feeling represented in a single literary work or cultural object.
