Cape Town International (CPT) and Port Elizabeth (PLZ) are busy international and regional airports each well served by airline traffic. Your travel agent can advise on flights to and from the start and finish of your tour. Port Elizabeth International (PLZ) is 5km outside the city and taxi transfers are widely available to the city. The tour begins with a pickup from your city hotel after breakfast 9:00am on Day 1 and a drop off at your Cape Town hotel at around 17:00 on Day 3. If you have not arranged, you pre tour accommodation through Acacia please tell us where you are staying the night before departure so we can ensure there are no delays on the first day of the tour. Tour start time: 09h00 (9:00am) Tour end point in Cape Town: Drop off at your hotel in Cape Town Tour end time: Late afternoon around 17h00 (5:00pm) on Day 3 PRE-TOUR ACCOMMODATION This tour departs Port Elizabeth early on day 1; we strongly recommend therefore that you plan to arrive the day before departure to overcome any jet-lag and acclimatise to Africa. We would be happy to book pre-tour and post-tour accommodation for you – please call or email us (or speak to your agent) with your arrival details and accommodation requirements. However please book early to avoid disappointment and the risk of having to find more expensive (or less convenient) lodgings. If time allows, we suggest extending your post tour stay in Cape Town to make the most of the city and the surrounding area. See below for a guide to extra accommodation costs. A large soft holdall or backpack and a smaller day pack is ideal. On this tour you will need a mixture of lightweight cool clothing for the day and warm clothing (i.e. fleece, long trousers and hat) for mornings and evenings as it can be cool on game drives. Pack a light rain jacket. It is advisable to bring mosquito spray throughout the year. A money belt/pouch that can be worn comfortably beneath your clothing is recommended. Please avoid bringing unnecessary valuables. A power bank is useful to charge electronic devices.     ASPECTS OF THE ECOLOGY OF LEOPARDS (PANTHERA PARDUS) IN THE LITTLE KAROO, SOUTH AFRICA A THESIS SUBMITTED IN FULFILMENT OF THE REQUIREMENTS OF DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY OF RHODES UNIVERSITY DEPARTMENT OF ZOOLOGY AND ENTOMOLOGY BY GARETH MANN FEBRUARY 2014 i ABSTRACT ABSTRACT Leopards (Panthera pardus) are the most common large predators, free roaming outside of protected areas across most of South Africa. Leopard persistence is attributed to their tolerance of rugged terrain that is subject to less development pressure, as well as their cryptic behaviour. Nevertheless, existing leopard populations are threatened indirectly by ongoing transformation of natural habitat and directly through hunting and conflict with livestock farmers. Together these threats may further isolate leopards to fragmented areas of core natural habitat. I studied leopard habitat preferences, population density, diet and the attitudes of landowners towards leopards in the Little Karoo, Western Cape, South Africa, an area of mixed land-use that contains elements of three overlapping global biodiversity hotspots. Data were gathered between 2010 and 2012 using camera traps set up at 141 sites over an area of ~3100km2, GPS tracking collars fitted to three male leopards, scat samples (n=76), interviews with landowners (n=53) analysed in combination with geographical information system (GIS) layers. My results reveal that leopards preferred rugged, mountainous terrain of intermediate elevation, avoiding low-lying, open areas where human disturbance was generally greater. Despite relatively un-fragmented habitat within my study area, the leopard population density (0.75 leopards/100km2) was one of the lowest yet recorded in South Africa. This may reflect low prey densities in mountain refuges in addition to historical human persecution in the area.

    15.2.2018 Barrydale, Ronnies Sex Shop, Swartberg Pass It’s time to say Good-bye, we thank Riana and Johan for their great hospitality. We continue on Route 62, this time we start at the other end and drive Eastbound. Not far from Montagu is the town of Barrydale, with some nice places to go. Johan recommended „Diesel & Cream“ and we have our second breakfast there. The decoration is unique with a collection of antique items. It seems that the Route 62 is developing as a tourist destination. The next stop is „Ronnie’s Sex Shop“. As the story goes, Ronnie had an ordinary shop on this remote part of the Route 62. One night, his friends had the glorious idea to add the word „Sex“ on the wall – as we all know „Sex sells“. One of the female guests started to leave her underwear and this is how it all began… Meanwhile a photo stop at Ronnies is a must when travelling on Route 62. There are now even branded T’Shirts and other merchandise on sale – the marketing department is up to speed and his business is booming. Ronnie has to thank his friends… At the foot of the Groot Swartberge we stop for today. Tomorrow we want to tackle the Swartberg Pass. However, it is not easy to find a campsite here. Our map shows a camp at the restaurant Kombuse Gat, but it does not really exist. Luckily, the people of the restaurant are very friendly and allow us to stay overnight and camp on the parking lot.

It is a newly designated wine district (March 2012) and an exploratory research study was undertaken to determine what the Brand ‘DNA’ of the Wellington Wine District is and then to propose appropriate marketing strategies for the developing wine tourism destination. The research process focussed on two types of wine tourism behaviour, namely festival-goers at the Wellington Wine Harvest Festival and the visitors to selected Wellington Wine Route members’ cellar doors. Surveys were executed by means of interviews and self-administration of structured questionnaires. Results were analysed in terms of two categories: first time visitors (FTV) and repeat visitors (RV).
