Twenty-four female red-winged blackbirds (Agelaius phoeniceus) were trapped when juveniles and held captive during 3.5 years of observation. Color changes in upper secondary coverts (epaulets) of wings occurred at the time of the late-summer molt of the birds' first and second years. About 84% of birds had dilute rust epaulets after their first molt; 16% had orange. After the molt of the second year, 100% of the birds acquired bright rust or orange epaulets. Thus, outside of the later-summer molting period, females with orange, rust or red epaulets would by chance be 86% after-second-year birds and 14% second year birds. Observations of females caught in fall banding operations supported these findings; 10% of 109 birds in their first winter had bright rust or orange epaulets, and 90% had dilute rust epaulets. 46 AUSTRALIAN FIELD ORNITHOLOGY 2005, 22, 46--47 Innovative Foraging by the House Sparrow Passer domesticus NEIL SHELLEY 16 Birdrock Avenue, Mount Martha, Victoria 3934 (Email: [email protected]) Summary This note describes an incidental observation of House Sparrows Passer domesticus foraging for insects trapped within the engine bay of motor vehicles in south-eastern Australia. Introduction The House Sparrow Passer domesticus is commensal with man and its global range has increased significantly recently, closely following human settlement on most continents and many islands (Long 1981, Cramp 1994). It is native to Eurasia and northern Africa (Cramp 1994) and was introduced to Australia in the mid 19th century (Biakers et al. 1984, Schodde & Tidemann 1997, Pizzey & Knight 1999). It is now common in cities and towns throughout eastern Australia (Biakers et al. 1984, Schodde & Tidemann 1997, Pizzey & Knight 1999, Barrett et al. 2003), particularly in association with human habitation (Schodde & Tidemann 1997), but is decreasing nationally (Barrett et al. 2003). Observation On 13 January 2003 at c. 1745 h Eastern Summer Time, a small group of House Sparrows was observed foraging in the street outside a restaurant in Port Fairy, on the south-western coast of Victoria (38°23' S, 142°14' E). Several motor vehicles were angle-parked in the street, nose to the kerb, adjacent to the restaurant. The restaurant had a few tables and chairs on the footpath for outside dining. The Sparrows appeared to be foraging only for food scraps, when one of them entered the front of a parked vehicle and emerged shortly after with an insect, which it then consumed. -

FORKTAIL 23 (2007): 1–11 An annotated list of birds wintering in the Lhasa river watershed and Yamzho Yumco, Tibet Autonomous Region, China AARON LANG, MARY ANNE BISHOP and ALEC LE SUEUR The occurrence and distribution of birds in the Lhasa river watershed of Tibet Autonomous Region, People’s Republic of China, is not well documented. Here we report on recent observations of birds made during the winter season (November–March). Combining these observations with earlier records shows that at least 115 species occur in the Lhasa river watershed and adjacent Yamzho Yumco lake during the winter. Of these, at least 88 species appear to occur regularly and 29 species are represented by only a few observations. We recorded 18 species not previously noted during winter. Three species noted from Lhasa in the 1940s, Northern Shoveler Anas clypeata, Solitary Snipe Gallinago solitaria and Red-rumped Swallow Hirundo daurica, were not observed during our study. Black-necked Crane Grus nigricollis (Vulnerable) and Bar-headed Goose Anser indicus are among the more visible species in the agricultural habitats which dominate the valley floors. There is still a great deal to be learned about the winter birds of the region, as evidenced by the number of apparently new records from the last 15 years. Accepted: September 30, 2019 Abstract Mitochondrial genes are placed on one molecule, which implies that they should carry consistent phylogenetic information. Following this advantage, we present a well-supported phylogeny based on mitochondrial genomes from almost 300 representa- tives of Passeriformes, the most numerous and differentiated Aves order. The analyses resolved the phylogenetic position of para- phyletic Basal and Transitional Oscines. Passerida occurred divided into two groups, one containing Paroidea and Sylvioidea, whereas the other, Passeroidea and Muscicapoidea. Analyses of mitogenomes showed four types of rearrangements including a duplicated control region (CR) with adjacent genes. Mapping the presence and absence of duplications onto the phylogenetic tree revealed that the duplication was the ancestral state for passerines and was maintained in early diverged lineages. Next, the duplication could be lost and occurred independently at least four times according to the most parsimonious scenario. In some lineages, two CR copies have been inherited from an ancient duplication and highly diverged, whereas in others, the second copy became similar to the first one due to concerted evolution. The second CR copies accumulated over twice as many substitutions as the first ones. However, the second CRs were not completely eliminated and were retained for a long time, which suggests that both regions can fulfill an important role in mitogenomes. -

Numerous trips have been made to the eleven counties which comprise this district. In Crawford county observations of rather pains- taking character have extended throughout the period. Habitats range from ponds, lakes, prairies, thickets to forests. There are thickets of plum, sumac, elder and thornapple. -

Clutch size of the passerinesof southern South America was studied by com- paring data taken from the literature for 33 1 species(177 genera), which breed in Chile, Argentina, Uruguay, and southernBrazil. Mean overall clutch size was 2.98 eggs,appreciably smaller than clutch size of passerinesat similar latitudes in the northern hemisphere. There was a highly significantdifference between mean clutch size of the two sub-orders representedin the study area, with the Deutero-Oscineshaving on averagesmaller clutches (2.73) than the Oscines(3.32). This difference between the two sub-orderswas maintained in each of the five zoogeographicalregions of the study area. There were also significant differencesin clutch size between the five main zoogeographicalregions: overall mean clutch size was smallest in the Amazonianregion (2.67) and largestin the Chaco(3.29). Deutero- Oscineseggs were proportionally larger than thoseof Oscines(14% and 11%of bodymass, respectively). Therewas no correlationbetween clutch size and body mass, nor was clutch size related to either nest type or migration. A migrating Black Drongo Dicrurus macrocercus was observed con- secutively feeding on a Siberian Stonechat Saxicola maura and an Asian Stubtail Urosphena squameiceps on Hongdo Island, Jeonnam Province, Korea. Unlike previous reports of occasional, apparently exceptional, avian predation by the Black Drongo, this sequential observation suggests that the Black Drongo may selectively hunt avian prey. During Black Drongo migration, when other migrating passerines are abundant and insect availability is relatively low, such behavior would help meet its high energy demands. The Black Drongo Dicrurus macrocercus is a small passerine bird widely distributed in Asia and commonly observed in open country with trees (Vaurie 1959). The Black Drongo is an omnivore, feeding predominantly on a variety of insects, and occasionally on reptiles, fish, bats, and birds (Ali and Ripley 1983, Senthilmurugan 2005). The previously reported avian prey species of the Black Drongo were Tickell’s Blue Flycatcher Muscicapa tickelliae, Prinia spp., Aegithina spp., Zosterops spp. including the Indian White-eye Zosterops palpebrosa, and some martins (Hirundinidae) (Osmaston 1922, Ali & Ripley 1983, Sridharan & Sivasubramanian 1987, D’Silva et al. 1990, Jayson & Ramachandran 1994). -

Biodiversity Observations http://bo.adu.org.za An electronic journal published by the Animal Demography Unit at the University of Cape Town The scope of Biodiversity Observations consists of papers describing observations about biodiversity in general, including animals, plants, algae and fungi. This includes observations of behaviour, breeding and flowering patterns, distributions and range extensions, foraging, food, movement, measurements, habitat and colouration/plumage variations. Biotic interactions such as pollination, fruit dispersal, herbivory and predation fall within the scope, as well as the use of indigenous and exotic species by humans. Observations of naturalised plants and animals will also be considered. Biodiversity Observations will also publish a variety of other interesting or relevant biodiversity material: reports of projects and conferences, annotated checklists for a site or region, specialist bibliographies, book reviews and any other appropriate material.
