The Red Cross estimates that more than 1.6 million people have been affected. The United Nations says almost 200,000 people are in urgent need of help. Damage assessment by the EU emergency mapping service, Copernicus, estimates up to 3,000 buildings have been damaged or destroyed in the disaster. According to local officials, at least 200 aftershocks have hit the area since the earthquake. ● Aftershocks with magnitudes as strong as 6.0 hit the island Sumba on Monday. ● According to the Indonesian National Board for Disaster Management, the death toll has risen to 1,234, as of Tuesday October 2nd and is expected to rise further. ● Hospital patients were being treated outside city hospitals due to continuing strong aftershocks. ● The Donggala regency, which is close to the epicenter, is thought to have been severely affected by the earthquake, yet it remains difficult to reach due to damaged roads and poor communications. ● Searching the rectangular zone for earthquakes since M7.5, I found 23 earthquakes that were greater than 4.0 in magnitude. ● See link for the USGS webpage. Damage undertaken by the electric substations of PLN was the most severe in the past earthquakes in Indonesia because almost all stopped working [6] ● By October 3rd, PLN has deployed 500 workers to repair the electricity network and managed to successfully operate two main substations, GI Pamona and GI Poso that serve Tentena, Poso, Kota Poso, and Kasiguncu airport [7]. ● Pari Parigi, Sidera, GI Silae, GI Talise and Pasangkayu substations are still in Damaged electric pole.
