The Greek-Orthodox Community of Mersin (Mid-Nineteenth Century to 1921)
Chapter 8 The Greek-Orthodox Community of Mersin (Mid-Nineteenth Century to 1921) Evangelia Balta Abstract This article is an overview of the history of the Greek-Orthodox com- munity of Mersin and its surrounding villages, retrieved from unpublished archival material to be found in Greece. More specifically, the material from the 11 Mersinian codices that were saved and transported to Greece with the Exchangeable refugees and are today kept in the General State Archives (Athens). The codices record the history of the communities (births, marriages, baptisms, deaths, decisions made by community authorities, the running of schools, trade unions, etc.), any activity in which the inhabitants of the Mersin area were involved from the mid-nineteenth cen- tury until 1924. This information was supported by refugees’ testimonies from the Oral Tradition Archive at the Centre of Asia Minor Studies in Athens. Lastly, con- sular reports from the Archive of the Greek Ministry of Foreign Affairs are presented, which include a description of the conditions prevailing amongst the Greek element in the city of Mersin and its environs at the beginning of the twentieth century. Mersin is the proud testimony of the progress made in the sandjak of Adana in the second half of the nineteenth century. Until 1841, just a few huts of farmers and fishermen stood on the site of the town that bustled with life in the first decade of the twentieth century. We read in the Greek literature that the emergence of Mersin can be traced back to the year 1842, when Rums from Cappadocia and the Greek islands arrived in this backwater and became its true founders. -

TURKISH PORTS IN MARITIME SILK ROAD(MSR) BY IRSA SHAFIQ Background • China’s One Belt, One Road (OBOR) and Maritime Silk Route(MSR) is known as the revival of ancient silk trade routes. OBOR and MSR aims to enhance connectivity between countries of the Eurasian landmass, through infrastructure development, people-to-people exchanges, increased trade, joint investment projects in technology and social welfare sectors. Through newly established and modernized routes, the travel time will decrease between China and Turkey for trade transport from 30 days to 10 days, and it is expected to create a $21-trillion trade cycle. The two countries also aim to boost bilateral trade to $100 billion by 2020. Strategic Importance of Turkey Turkey has a unique trans-continental geographic location, which allows it to serve as a central exchange or transit point for China to Europe through land and sea routes. Turkey also provides easy access to three major seas i.e. Black sea, Mediterranean sea and the Aegean sea. Under Middle Corridor of One Belt & One Road(OBOR), Turkey and China will be linked via the Caspian Sea and Central Asian countries. This line is a safe and economical route that complements existing lines on the east-west axis. OBOR & MSR Map Turkish Ports The Turkish port sector is moving into a new phase of growth as the country seeks to position itself as a leading regional shipment logistics centre. At present there is no hub port in Turkey but the intention is to establish three port hubs, one in the Black Sea, one in the Aegean and one in the Mediterranean region. -

2017 MARITIME SECTOR REPORT İSTANBUL 2018 İstanbul & Marmara, Agean, Mediterranean, Blacksea Regions TURKISH CHAMBER OF SHIPPING TURKISH CHAMBER OF SHIPPING İSTANBUL & MARMARA, AEGEAN, MEDITERRANEAN, BLACK SEA REGIONS MARITIME SECTOR REPORT 2017 İ S T A N B U L – 2018 II FOREWORD The "TURKISH SHIPPING SECTOR REPORT 2017” has been prepared within the framework of authority and responsibility granted by paragraphs No.12 and No.19 of Law No. 5174. The report covers quantitative facts and their analysis as of 31.12.2017 and is presented to our members, Turkish and foreign institutions. The Report mainly contains eight chapters: First chapter is on Turkish Merchant Fleet and its yearly developments. The fleet has been analyzed by registry, building, tonnage and age. The position of Turkish Merchant Fleet within the world fleet and among the fleets of neighboring countries has also been examined. Second chapter includes the cargoes transported by Merchant Fleet in 2017. The developments of sabotage and foreign trade cargoes, the progress of seaborne trade by flags have been explained in detail. Within this chapter, transported cargoes by types, seaborne trade to OECD countries, BSEC and EU countries have been taken into consideration. Third chapter covers the developments in shipbuilding industry and the data about Turkish shipyards, including the recent developments in the field of yacht building industry in Turkey. Fourth chapter covers Turkish Ports and the amount of cargo handled in 2017 and yearly developments. Fifth chapter includes data about the passages through the Turkish Straits and the marine traffic systems. Sixth chapter deals with marine tourism and yacht tourism in Turkey. -
Cilician Programme 2009
19 - 28 June 2009 23 October – 1 November 2009 10 days of excursions to discover the region and one of the last and most important Mediterranean Monk Seal breeding area, together with the staff of the successful conservation project. THE PROGRAMME We believe the local people of the area are the main stakeholders. It is important for the success of the sustainability of the conservation project and the survival of the critically endangered Mediterranean monk seal, that they feel an integral part. Therefore, during this trip local involvement is hoped to be encouraged whenever possible. We would like to use local guides, accommodation, transport, and especially for coastal trips, use simple fishing boats rented from the artisanal fisherman. Please note that all will be in simple ordnance and a list of recommended equipment during the trip will be provided before your departure. With all our combined efforts, we hope that low-impact ecotourism will be the effective tool to ultimately reach that point where the habitat will accommodate both the monk seal and its human populace in peace. Day 1 Arrival to Adana airport (from Rome or from other airports: please contact the organizer for details). A minibus will be ready there to meet our guests and this vehicle will be available throughout the trip. From Adana to Bozyazi the journey will take approximately 6 -7 hours (~ 310 km). After Tasucu - Silifke a narrow, winding coastal road will start. Although the scenery will be wild, the minibus will relatively reduce its speed. Dinner will be on the way. On arrival to Bozyazi, late in the night, the group will check into Zeysa, a locally owned rustic hotel. -

A total of 153 crustacean taxa were found. Of the specimens identified at species level, 93 species were distributed in the Mediterranean Sea and Atlantic Ocean, 12 in the Indian Ocean and the Red Sea, and 4 in the cosmopolitan waters of the oceans. Three crustacean assemblages were distinguished according to the habitat types and eutrophication levels of the study sites: 1) the crustacean community of the eutrophic regions was dominated by decapods and characterized by high biomass, low faunistic characters, and high nutrient concentrations; 2) the assemblage of the bottom, vegetated with a meadow, exhibited well-diversified assemblages mainly composed of amphipod species with high faunistic characters, low biomass, and dissolved oxygen content; and 3) the assemblage of the nonvegetated undisturbed soft bottom was associated with the sedimentary parameters along the bottom depths (10–25 m, 50–100 m, and 150–200 m). -

Although it is known that in the 1910s, tramlines were used in Mersin and there were a number of piers used for various purposes, the route of the respective tramlines and the location of the piers were roughly drawn in several studies based on the oral history studies. In this context, the aim of this study is to ascertain the route of the tramlines and location of the piers by using historical cartographic materials that are important sources of urban and regional historical analysis. Based on two specific historical maps of Mersin city, the route of the tramlines and location of the piers have been identified together with the historical buildings by using georeferencing tools available in Free and Open Source Software for GIS. Various methods are utilized in order to conserve and prevent extinction of Mediterranean monk seal, which is referred to as seal by local people, in many countries. Although it does not have any natural predators on our coasts, Mediterranean monk seal population gradually diminishes due to irresponsible and unplanned human activities. -

Container Ports of Turkey Hakan ERDOGAN Port Expert Turkish State Railways Ports Department Turkey has four major container ports, Haydarpasa, Ambarlı, Izmir and Mersin. Except Ambarli, the other three ports are operated by a large governmental agency namely TCDD (Turkish State Railways). Although the Mediterranean trade is one of the fastest growing container sectors, Turkish ports have not seen any spillover effects from this. One could argue that Turkish ports have certain level of centrality but not sufficient enough to reach the hub port status. There are some positive trends in the market as well. Turkey’s volatile economy appears to be increasing. The low ocean freight rates are helping the carriers compete more effectively against the road haulage alternative, i.e., Turkey to northern Europe. Carriers are also launching new services and upgrading the existing ones. The role of containerization in facilitating global commerce has been well documented by various scholars. It has altered the structure of the liner shipping industry besides altering the historical trade-flows from well-defined hinterland regions through traditional seaports. The level of competition among container ports to maintain and/or enhance their market share is also readily visible today. Solely from that perspective, one can argue that the Turkish ports are geographically challenged to be a hub port or a transshipment port compared to the other Mediterranean ports like Marsaxlokk, Gioia Tauro and Port Said. However, one should note that there are factors over and above deviation distance responsible for the choice of a transshipment port such as the port’s inherent centrality and its operational efficiency, cost, conveniences, the availability of a shipping milieu and efficient hinterland connections to the interior points.
