  • Adenan: Taking PBB and BN Sarawak to Greater Heights Bernama 28Feb 2014
Adenan: Taking PBB And BN Sarawak To Greater Heights Bernama 28Feb 2014 KUALA LUMPUR, Feb 28 (Bernama) -- As Tan Sri Adenan Satem takes over as the new chief minister of Sarawak effective today, the Land of the Hornbills is set to see a new era in its political landscape. How is Adenan going to steer Parti Pesaka Bumiputera Bersatu (PBB) and Sarawak Barisan Nasional (BN)? Would he follow the course set by his predecessor Tan Sri Abdul Taib Mahmud during his 33 year tenure as the chief minister. Adenan has lots to do in closing ranks within his own party and find a solution for BN's squabbling component members. KEEPING PBB INTACT AND BN UNITED While many political analysts and politicians in the state believe the state administration will be very much remain the same, Adenan's style of leadership will be keenly watched. Would Adenan rule like his predecessor and keep PPB as a powerful political entity? As pointed out by Dr Suffian Mansor, a senior lecturer with Universiti Malaysia Sarawak's (UNI MAS ) Faculty of Social Sciences, though Adenan inherited a strong PBB, which was formed following the merger of Parti Pesaka and Parti Bumiputera in 1972, keeping the party intact is important. "He has to come out with good strategies to harmonise the problems in the state. There is a need to cool down the party supporters of certain leaders," he told Bernama in an interview. There were some disenchantment within the party when Deputy Chief Minister Tan Sri Alfred Jabu, who is also Deputy President I of PBB, a Dayak was not picked as the successor to Taib.

  • Impressive Results Await BN in Sarawak State Elections
ISSUE: 2016 NO. 20 ISSN 2335-6677 RESEARCHERS AT ISEAS – YUSOF ISHAK INSTITUTE SHARE THEIR UNDERSTANDING OF CURRENT EVENTS Singapore | 3 May 2016 Impressive Results Await BN in Sarawak State Elections By Lee Hock Guan* EXECUTIVE SUMMARY The Sarawak state elections will be won by the Barisan Nasional. The question is really, by how much. Taib Mahmud’s successor as chief minister, Adenan Satem, has through various measures taken over the last two years, increased his personal popularity and the popularity of his party tremendously. While there have been disagreements within both the coalitions – Barisan Nasional (BN) and Pakatan Harapan (PH) – those within PH are most serious, and damage the credibility of its component parties even at the federal level. This may affect voter support in the general elections to be held within two years. As the situation now stands, the opposition parties have lost the initiative that they had in 2011, and are basically carrying out damage control measures. Retaining the same number of seats they won in 2011 will be their most realistic strategy. * Lee Hock Guan is ISEAS Senior Fellow and co-coordinator of the Institute’s Malaysia Studies Programme 1 ISSUE: 2016 NO. 20 ISSN 2335-6677 ETHNIC POLITICS WITHOUT UMNO Much of what lies behind Sarawak’s political conditioning is in the fact that the United Malays National Organisation (UMNO), Malaysia’s federally dominant party, has never established itself in this East Malaysian state where Malay voters constitute a minority. Instead, UMNO, through the Barisan Nasional (BN) coalition model in which it is the decisive voice, has strategically formed political pacts with parties representing Sarawak’s Muslim bumiputras, Christian bumiputra minorities and Chinese.

  • The Outcome of the 12Th Malaysia General Election for the State of Sarawak
Journal of Administrative Science Vol. 8, Issue 1, 87-100, 2011 The Largest Contributors, the Least Beneficiaries: The Outcome of the 12th Malaysia General Election for the State of Sarawak Shaharuddin Badaruddin Suseela Devi Chandran ABSTRACT 12th Malaysian Election 2008 has given a new perspective in Malaysian politics. The achievement of the opposition party in denying two-third majority of the ruling party, the Barisan Nasional (National Front) in the Malaysian parliament has open up the new dimensions in the Malaysian political system. Among the outstanding states that helped the National Front (Barisan Nasional) to maintain the federal government were Sabah and Sarawak. Sabah and Sarawak can be considered as the biggest cash depositors in providing enough seats for the Barisan Nasional to control the federal government. Knowing well that Sabah and Sarawak states had ‘saved’ the National Front from possibly the first ever defeat since independence in 1957, the federal government is very much indebted to these two states. Using this opportunity, these two states have ‘demanded’ more attention from the federal government. The most important issues for these two states have always been the issue of development. However, the outcome is far from expectation. Winning 31 out of 32 seats does not give Sarawak the advantage in getting more post in the cabinet in compare to other states. This paper will provide a great deal of discussions on the issues that arises after the 12th General Election and the possibilities of political maneuvering in the near future. • Sarawak: One Election, Many Contests
Khoo Boo Teik ed. “13th General Election in Malaysia: Issues, Outcomes and Implicaitons" IDE-JETRO, 2013 REPORT 6 Sarawak: One Election, Many Contests Andrew Aeria Introduction In May 2013, Malaysia held its 13th General Election (GE13) which saw contests for 505 state and 222 parliamentary seats. All the states of the federation held simultaneous state level elections except for Sarawak which only held parliamentary elections for its 31 constituencies since state and parliamentary elections are not run simultaneously in the state. Sarawak’s state elections were last held in 2011. The country’s 12th parliament was dissolved on 3 April. Nominations were held on 20th April with polling on 5th May. The formal election campaign period lasted 15 days although campaigning had begun well in advance of parliament’s dissolution. This was certainly the case for Sarawak where campaigning and preparations never really ended after the April 2011 state elections. They just continued, albeit in a low-key mode, and slowly intensified until it peaked in May 2013. There were keen contests throughout the country, a phenomenon that was similarly replicated in Sarawak. As a current affairs commentator noted, the elections ‘was a memorable one for the heat it generated, the rhetoric that went into it, the wild accusations and counter-accusations, the pornography videos of the so-called sexual exploits of an opposition leader or someone who resembled him, the lies uttered to discredit opposition leaders, the Brutus’s who stabbed their erstwhile friends in the back, the large numbers of party hoppers, the turncoats, and above all, the large amount of public money waster on handouts to buy votes’ (D’ Cruz 2013).

  • Women's Political Participation in Sarawak
Journal of Administrative Science Vol. 9 No. 2, 63-86, 2012 Women’s Political Participation in Sarawak: Methodology, Fieldwork and Findings Nadrawina Haji Isnin Faculty of Administrative Science & Policy Studies, Universiti Teknologi MARA Samarahan Campus, Sarawak [email protected] ABSTRACT This article critically evaluates an agenda for political participation research aimed at providing empirical answers to questions derived from the women in Sarawak. Among other issues, this paper explores the gender constructs that impede women’s access to the higher political sphere. Indeed, such socially constructed realities often diminish the possibility for women involvement in the process of decision making. Of particular emphasis on this paper, is the facilitating factor that propels women’s entry into political parties. Some of these issues are compromised or became obstacles in women’s opportunity in political life. The empirical questions are drawn together into an integrated agenda for future studies in gender and political participation in Sarawak. Keywords: gender, politics, participation, Sarawak, Malaysia ISSN 1675-1302 © 2012 Faculty of Administrative Science and Policy Studies, Universiti Teknologi MARA (UiTM), Malaysia 63 Journal of Administrative Science INTRODUCTION An essential principle lay down by the United Nations’ Human Right Charter on International standards, clearly states that men and women have an equal right to participate fully in all aspects of the political process; in practice, however, it is often harder for women to exercise this right (United Nations, n.d). The progress towards the achieving the 30% target advocated by the United Nations remained slow and uneven throughout the world. It is even more absurd given that half of the electorates in most countries of the world are women.

  • Five Sacked SPDP Members Still in BN- Speaker Bernama February 14, 2012
Five Sacked SPDP Members Still In BN- Speaker Bernama February 14, 2012 KUCHING, Feb 14 (Bernama) - Five Sarawak Progressive Democratic Party (SPDP) members sacked in early January are still in Barisan Nasional (BN). State Assembly Speaker Datuk Amar Mohd Asfia Awang Nassar said under Standing Order 2 of the state asembly session, they are still members of BN chaired by the Chief Minister at state and the Prime Minister at federal level. "They are still legitimate members of BN although sacked by a BN component party," he told 'Zamalah Wartawan Muda 1Malaysia 2012' course participants here Tuesday. Mohd Asfia said their membership in BN remained intact although no longer members of SPDP. The five sacked SPDP members include a member of parliament who holds the post of assistant minister. They are Marudi State Assemblyman Datuk Sylvester Entri Muran (Asst Min of Public Utilities), Tasik Biru State Assemblyman Datuk Peter Nansian Ngusie (Asst Min of Industrial Development), Mas Gading Member of Parliament Datuk Dr Tiki Lafe, Bekenu State Assemblyman Rosey Yunus (Asst Min Family and Women Development) and Batu Danau State Assemblyman Paulus Palu Gumbang. Asked whether Sarawak state assembly would be dissolved if parliament was dissolved to make way for general election, Asfia said it depends on the power of the Yang Dipertua Negeri on the advice of the Chief Minister. "It is likely that state assemblies ruled by the opposition will not be dissolved even after parliament is dissolved as the ruling session will only end on April 20, 2013, " he added. At Sarawak state election on April 16 last year, BN won 55 seats, opposition parties won 15 seats while an independent candidate won one seat.
