Facebook artists come face to face ECLECTIC MIX – the first exhibition by the Facebook Group of the Northern Artists will be held at Frodsham’s Castle Park Arts Centre from May 21 to June 29 A special open evening will take place from 7-9pm on Friday, May 23 and there will be a “meet the artists” event on Bank Holiday Monday, May 26 from 10am. Two years ago some Facebook acquaintances made a point of meeting face to face at the Arts Centre and decided they needed to form a group where they could discuss art related matters relevant to art in northern and North Wales. From this beginning it was decided to organise an exhibition to show what could be done using social media and celebrate the exciting and professional art by the region’s artists to include paintings and 3D work. A range of speakers explained the facts about what human trafficking is, what is being done to stop it and how to support victims. People from a variety of Christian denominations attended, from across Cheshire, Merseyside, Manchester and Stoke-on-Trent. Major Anne Read, the Salvation Army’s national anti-trafficking response co-ordinator led the day, supported by her colleague Major Gladys Ljungholm from the North Western division. Other speakers included Weaver Vale MP Graham Evans and Hannah Flint from International Justice Mission. Discussion in the afternoon was chaired by Frodsham Methodist Church’s minister, the Rev Denise Harding. The Forum, supported by Frodsham and Cheshire Churches Together, sought to inform individuals and encourage them to discuss and identify positive forms of action. It was an opportunity for concerned individuals to identify how the church and other organisations could respond to this issue in a modern world. Anyone concerned that someone may have been trafficked should telephone Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111 or The Salvation Army on 0300 3038151. For further information on the Forum e-mail enquiries to: [email protected].

Pupils from Manley Primary School busy making their own scrapbooks. School ‘detectives’ recall World War One PUPILS from Manley Primary School became “detectives” as part of Cheshire Military Museum project to commemorate the centenary of the First World War. “Mabel’s War” was a collaboration between the military museum and Chester’s Grosvenor Museum and was put together from the 100-year-old note books of Mabel Earp, a volunteer nurse from Cheshire, who collected stories, poems, letters and drawings from the soldiers she cared for. Manley School’s detective work involved pupils discovering all about Mabel’s life and looking at the things that had been recorded in her notebooks. They followed in her footsteps by keeping their own scrapbooks over the last few months. Each child picked their favourite page which was then used as part of the Mabel’s War display. A series of drama workshops for children aged 7-11 were run at the Military Museum by artistic director Steph Brocken, from Minerva Arts and over a period of weeks a performance was put together. The Mabel’s War digital exhibition is available to view at the Cheshire Military Museum until June 3. Mabel Earp was born in 1879 at but later moved with her family to Preston Brook. During the First World War she worked as a volunteer nurse at the nearby Oaklands Military Hospital and Frodsham Auxiliary Hospital, which was located near where the Frodsham War Memorial now stands. She died in December 1947.

Pub’s alfresco seating approved PLANNING chiefs have given the go-ahead for alfesco seating outside the Bear’s Paw pub at Frodsham. The application by the Spirit Pub company was opposed by Frodsham Town Council on the grounds of an obstruction on the highway and also because it would detract from the appearance of the building, which is in a conservation order. Councillors felt the pub already had a beer garden and that the development would spoil the appearance of an “iconic building” dating from 1632. But Cheshire West and Chester planning committee approved the proposals.
