Parks was born on February 16, 1987, in Kearney, NE, and spent his childhood and adolescence in Selma, CA, Glenside, PA, and Kearney, MO (sic). In 2004 he began studying at Grinnell College in Grinnell, IA, and in 2007 he spent a semester in Greece through the College Year in Athens program. He received his B.A. in Classics with honors in 2008, at which time he was also inducted into Phi Beta Kappa and was awarded the Grinnell Classics Department’s Seneca Prize. During his graduate work at Brown University in Providence, RI, he delivered papers at the annual meetings of the Classical Association of the Middle West and South (2012) and the American Philological Association (2014), and in the summer of 2011 he taught ancient Greek for the Hellenic Education & Research Center program in Thouria, Greece, in addition to attending the British School at Athens epigraphy course. -

First, I intend to analyze the Greek historians writing under the Roman Empire (from Dionysius of Halicarnassus to Eusebius) through the lens of their common condition – Greek intellectuals, living under a world empire, engaging in a traditional elite activity which had arisen under different political/social circumstances. This will allow me to judge their similarities, producing a richer picture of Greek historical writing, but also highlight their differences (choice of subject, historical method and outlook, style and narrative voice) and the development of the genre over time. -

This biography should not to confused with the another work bear- ing the same title by Iamblichus, thought to be Porphyry’s disciple. ANY THINK THAT PYTHAGORAS WAS THE SON OF MNESARCHUS, but they differ as to the latter’s race; some thinking him a Samian, while Neanthes, M in the fifth book of his Fables states he was a Syrian, from the city of Tyre. As a famine had arisen in Samos, Mnesarchus went thither to trade, and was natu- ralized there. There also was born his son Pythagoras, who early manifested studi- ousness, but was later taken to Tyre, and there entrusted to the Chaldeans, whose doctrines he imbibed. Thence he returned to Ionia, where he first studied under the Syrian Pherecydes, then also under Hermodamas the Creophylian who at that time was an old man residing in Samos. 2. Neanthes says that others hold that his father was a Tyrrhenian, of those who in- habit Lemnos, and that while on a trading trip to Samos was there naturalized. On sailing to Italy, Mnesarchus took the youth Pythagoras with him. Just at this time this country was greatly flourishing. Neanthes adds that Pythagoras had two older brothers, Eunostus and Tyrrhenus. But Apollonius, in his book about Pythagoras, affirms that his mother was Pythais, a descendant, of Ancaeus, the founder of Sa- mos. -

This is his only surviving work, which was composed in 15 books, and verses on many different subjects. It is an enormous amount of information of all kinds, mostly linked to dining, but also on music, dance, games, and all sorts of activities. On Book 13, Athenaeus puts the guests of the banquet talking about erotic matters, and one of them cites this fragment in which Idomeneus of Lampsacus (ca. 325-270 BCE) talks about the entrance of the great Themistocles in the Agora of Athens: in a car full of hetairai. Not much is known about Idomeneus, only that he wrote books on historical and philosophical matters, and that nothing he wrote survived. -

Tales of Philip II under the Roman Empire: Aspects of Monarchy and Leadership in the Anecdotes, Apophthegmata , and Exempla of Philip II Michael Thomas James Welch BA (Hons. Class 1) M.Phil. A thesis submitted for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy at The University of Queensland in 2016 School of Philosophical and Historical Inquiry P a g e 1 | 270 Abstract This thesis examines the role anecdotes, apophthegmata , and exempla play in the historiography of the Macedonian king Philip II in the Roman world - from the first century BCE to the fourth century CE. Most of the material examined comes from moral treatises, collections of tales and sayings, and military works by Greek and Latin authors such as Plutarch, Valerius Maximus, Aelian, Polyaenus, Frontinus, and Stobaeus (supplemented with pertinent material from other authors). This approach will show that while many of the tales surely originate from the earlier Greek world and Hellenistic times, the use and manipulation of the majority of them and the presentation of Philip are the product of a world living under Roman political and cultural domination. This thesis is divided into six chapters. Chapter one defines and discusses anecdotal material in the ancient world. Chapter two examines two emblematic ancient authors (Plutarch and Valerius Maximus) as case studies to demonstrate in detail the type of analysis required by all the authors of this study. Following this, the thesis then divides the material of our authors into four main areas of interest, particularly concerning Philip as a king and statesman. Therefore, chapter three examines Philip and justice. -

Box 1346 Ann Arbor, Ml 48106-1346 Abstract In my thesis I examine certain aspects of the political history of Athens in the early Hellenistic period, that is after the battle of Chaironeia in 338 B.C. and until the late 260s. For Athens this was a transitional period; she had to face a completely new political reality: she was no longer the great power of the fifth or even the fourth century B.C., Macedonia rose to power, then Alexander created a huge empire and his death triggered endless struggles for power among his Successors, in which Athens found herself involved. Independent foreign policy then on the part of Athens was impossible; on the other hand, diplomacy became more delicate and demanding than ever. I focus on the ways in which the Athenian leadership (the generals and the orators) adjusted to the circumstances. Firstly, I have examined the role of the generals in diplomacy in order to establish that they did assume increased responsibilities. -

Renée Koch Piettre Anthropomorphism, Theatre, Epiphany: From Herodotus to Hellenistic Historians Abstract: This paper argues that, beginning with the Euripidean deus ex machina, dramatic festivals introduced a new standard into epiphanic rituals and experience. Through the scenic double énonciation, gods are seen by mythical heroes as gods, but by the Athenian spectators as costumed actors and fictive entities. People could scarcely believe these were ‘real’ gods, but would have no doubt been im- pressed by the scenic machinery. Thus the Homeric theme of a hero’s likeness to the gods developed into the Hellenistic theme of the godlike ruler’s (or actor’s) the- atrical success (or deceit). So in the Athenians’ Hymn to Demetrius Poliorcetes, a vic- torious ruler entering a city is welcomed as a better god than the gods themselves. -

Where a mortal king was assimilated with the divine during their lifetime. Unfortunately, only fragmentary, uncertain, evidence survives for these kings. Yet, we truly begin to see a re-emergence of this idea through Alexander the Great. The journey to divinity started to take form through him, but only took shape under the successors of Alexander and the establishment of their cults. The Role of Timaeus in Greek Historiography* Klaus Meister Last year Lionel Pearson published his monograph The Greek Historians of the West. As the subtitle Timaeus and his Predecessors indicates, Timaeus is in the centre of the study.1 In accordance with his previous publications The Early Ionian Historians (1939), The Local Historians of Attica (1942) and The Lost Histories o f Alexander the Great (1960) Pearson aims to enlarge those fragments that undoubtedly originate in Timaeus with material from later authors, above all from Diodorus and Plutarch. To accomplish this, Pearson uses two leges established by previous scho lars which in my opinion are no longer valid today: the “lex Volquardsen”2 and the “lex Geffdcen”.3 According to the first, Diodorus used only one source for the extended treatment of a particular topic; therefore, in the case of Sicilian history, Timaeus (LGrH 566). In fact, Pearson believes that the whole history of Sicily in books 4-21 from the mythical time down to the death of Agathocles in 289/8 B.C. derives from Timaeus and that even differences between him and other authors cited by Diodorus go back to Timaeus: “In fact, it will be argued that when he (sc. Wheeler N THE SPRING of 427 B.C. a Peloponnesian fleet under the nauarch I Alcidas lumbered across the Aegean to raise the Athenian siege of Mytilene. i At Embaton in the Erythraea the fleet received confir mation of the report that Mytilene had already fallen; the Spartan mission had failed. 2 But the Elean Teutiaplus, a figure otherwise unknown, proposed to salvage the situation through stratagem: a sur prise attack by night would catch the Athenians unprepared, dis persed, and negligent in victory (Thuc. 3.30.1-3). Teutiaplus justifies his plan by reference to TO KEVOV TOt) 7TOA€P.OV (3.30.4), an obscure phrase, which then appears (always in the plural and always in a military context) in other authors down to Cicero, before eventually entering the collection of proverbs attributed to Diogenianus. 3 Metaphorical use of the phrase (i.e., in a non-military context) is first seen in Philo of Alexandria (Ebr. 76) and Plutarch (Mor. 41B). Neither Thucydides nor Aristotle, however, recognized the phrase as a proverb, of which Polybius gives the first explicit attestation. The history of the phrase KEV'ovl KEVil. TOl! 7ToAEP.OV provides a rare glimpse of how a Greek proverb originated, and allows us to probe its relationship to ancient military thought and psychological theory.
