COMMENCEMENT MAY 22, 2020 NINETY-FIFTH COMMENCEMENT

The Commencement Ceremony tonight marks the 95th Commencement of Labette Community College. Labette Community College was founded as Parsons Junior College in 1923 on the top floor of the old high school – now Parsons Middle School – on West Main. The College relocated to its present campus in the former East Middle School at 14th and Broadway in 1963 and became Labette Community Junior College in 1966. In 1978 the College was renamed Labette Community College.

The College has awarded more than 9,000 Associate Degrees. Thousands more traditional and nontraditional students have received special training to improve job skills and personal interests.

The College has evolved from a city college primarily serving those students who wished to transfer to a four-year institution to a comprehensive community college offering transfer degrees, professional/technical degrees and certificates, continuing education, customized training for business and industry, lifelong learning opportunities, and a variety of programs and services for Southeast Kansas and the four-state region.

8 Student Commencement Speakers Jenna Kendrick Josie Smith

Jenna Kendrick, the daughter of Peter and Bethany Kendrick, is graduating with an Associate in General Studies. Jenna was named to the All-Kansas Academic Team. Jenna is an active member of Phi Theta Kappa, serving as their Homecoming Queen Candidate. In addition, she is a member of the Biology Club and Student Veterans Organization. She is active in the Catholic Youth Organization and PRC Dance while also being a CNA and a community volunteer. Jenna will attend Pittsburg State University in the fall to major in Nursing and will be a part of the ROTC Program. She graduates with Magna Cum Laude honors.

Josie Smith, the daughter of Kevin and Cherie Schenker, and Leland Smith, is graduating with Associate of Science degrees in Accounting and in Business Administration. Josie is a member of the All-Kansas Academic Team and was named the New Century Scholar as the top scoring team member for the state. Josie serves as President of Phi Theta Kappa and is a part of the Regional and International award winning Distinguished Officer Team for the current year. Josie is also the President of Phi Beta Lambda and served as the State Treasurer this past year. She also serves as Vice President of the Student Government Association and was named a Top 20 Cardinal last year. Josie volunteers in her community. In the fall, Josie plans on attending Pittsburg State University to major in Accounting. Josie graduates with Magna Cum Laude honors.
