The renewable energy sector continues to increasingly carve a bigger space in the country’s economic sphere, encouraged by government funding and favourable industrial and governmental policies. According to the International Energy Agency (IEA), India will be the fastest growing energy consumer and market by 2040. It has therefore positioned itself distinctively with its target of achieving sufficient renewable energy projects over the next three years to surpass 200 GW of green capacity. The target has created awareness about renewable energy in the country and will offer massive investment opportunities across the value chain. Telangana, since its establishment, has been playing an active role in aggressively supporting solar energy, along with other states in South India such as Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu and Karnataka to promote renewable energy. The region truly holds promise for the sector with its profitable and favourable government and industrial policies. UBM India’s RenewX 2018 in Hyderabad is thus poised to create an enviable industry platform for organizations to capitalize and penetrate into the lucrative south Indian renewable energy market. Bringing together manufacturers, EPCs, distributors and service providers, the expo has over 150 participating exhibitors striving to make a difference in the renewable energy domain. Apart from the Telangana and China Pavilions, this year, a special Pavilion for Start- ups has been launched at RenewX for the first time. A major highlight of the expo is the power packed two day conference, ‘Sourcing the Sun’ that will focus on integrating Renewables into business, and finding the best solutions and practices to enable the same. The conference will also include Case Study Presentations and Technical Presentations to bring forth the experience from the ground and discuss the most pertinent issues in technology. Significantly, this year, UBM India in association with SCGJ is organising a ‘Green Job Fair’ for graduating students, working professionals, and new entrepreneurs who want to explore opportunities in the clean energy sector. It aims to provide opportunities to candidates to work with the leading names in the Renewable energy sector across a plethora of job roles. We sincerely thank all our partners and central nodal agencies such as the Indian Renewable Energy Development Agency Ltd. (IREDA), Telangana State Renewable Energy Development Corporation Ltd., (TSREDCO), Electronic Industries Association of Andhra Pradesh ( ELIAP ) , Skill Council for Green Jobs ( SCGJ ), Indo German Energy Forum – Support Office (IGEF)-, Telangana Electronic Manufacturing Industries association (TELMA), The Federation of Telangana and Andhra Pradesh Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FTAPCCI) and Indian Biogas Association (IBA) for their continued and unstinted support for the show. • Evaluation of Competitiveness of Power Plants: Evidence from India
Journal of Economics and Economic Education Research Volume 21, Issue 4, 2020 EVALUATION OF COMPETITIVENESS OF POWER PLANTS: EVIDENCE FROM INDIA Himmat Singh Ratnoo, Maharshi Dayanand University, India Santosh Kumar Dubey, Hindustan Power Private Limited, India ABSTRACT This study attempts to gauge the relative performance of a set of large size coal-based power stations of India. The primary data for the study were collected through survey questionnaires for relevant operating and performance parameters for India’s 18 coal-based power stations including Mundra and Saasan Ultra-Mega Power Projects (UMPPs). Data Envelopment analysis (DEA) has been used in the study to gauge the relative performance of Mundra UMPP with Saasan UMPP and other large size coal-based power stations of the country. The classical DEA model has been used to distinguish the efficient coal power stations from rest of the large sized coal-based power stations of the country. Power stations with total installed generation capacity of 2000MW or more each were selected for the study. The study indicates the need and scope for improvement in the performance of power plants for sustainable industrialisation and urbanisation. KEYWORDS Coal-based power plant, Power plant, Competitiveness, Performance, Data envelopment analysis, India INTRODUCTION The aggregate installed power generation capacity of India as on the date of comparison for this study, i.e. 31st March 2016, was 3,02,087.84 Mega Watt (MW) (CEA Annual Report, 2016). Out of this, thermal power generation accounts for 2,10,675.04 MW (69.73%) and coal- based power alone constitutes for 1,85,172.88 MW (61.30%) of the total electricity produced in the country (CEA Report).

  • Untapped Opportunities in India's Rooftop Solar Market
1 Jyoti Gulia, Founder JMK Research Vibhuti Garg, IEEFA Energy Economist July 2020 Powering Up Sunshine – Untapped Opportunities in India’s Rooftop Solar Market How the Commercial and Industrial Sector Can Cut Costs and Reduce Emissions Executive Summary The Government of India has set a target of 40 gigawatts (GW) of rooftop solar capacity to be installed by 2022. As of December 31, 2019, total rooftop solar capacity stood at 5.4GW1, well below the installation rate required. Nonetheless, the basic framework including net metering policies for rooftop solar arrays now exists across all states and the implementation of rooftop solar power installations has started in a true sense. Given such momentum, this sector should be a key economic growth priority post the COVID-19 pandemic. To promote the deployment of solar rooftop capacity, the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE) implemented in 2015 the “Grid Connected Rooftop and Small Solar Power Plants Programme (Phase I)” under which a subsidy of up to 30% of the Given its momentum, benchmark cost was provided for general rooftop solar power category states, and up to 70% of the benchmark cost for special category states should be a key growth (the North Eastern States including Sikkim, priority post COVID-19. Uttarakhand, Himachal Pradesh, Jammu and Kashmir and Lakshadweep, Andaman and Nicobar Islands) for installation across the residential, institutional and social sectors. For government installations, achievement-linked incentives of up to 25% of the benchmark cost in general category states / union territories (UTs) and up to 60% of the benchmark cost for special category states / UTs were also provided.
