Performance Notes The singing of the Exsultet at the is arguably a cantor’s most important and challenging role of the church year. This role was formerly reserved to the deacon. A singer not in holy orders still omits the sentence, “My dearest friends…,” and the greeting, “The Lord be with you.” (See note on page 2.) This edition suggests a convenient pitch. If another is chosen, remember that it must be sustained for five to seven minutes. Prepare each phrase with adequate breath, and take plenty of time at each full bar. Plan ahead for other breathing points, especially if they are more or less frequent than suggested. A slower, rather than quicker, pace will be found to be advantageous. The black note heads of this edition should be given weight and duration according to the sense of the proclamation. A prayerful reading of the text will be the best guide. It might be helpful to choose (and mark!) a word or two as being the most important of each phrase or sentence.
