An Understanding of Maya: the Philosophies of Sankara, Ramanuja and Madhva
An understanding of Maya: The philosophies of Sankara, Ramanuja and Madhva Department of Religion studies Theology University of Pretoria By: John Whitehead 12083802 Supervisor: Dr M Sukdaven 2019 Declaration Declaration of Plagiarism 1. I understand what plagiarism means and I am aware of the university’s policy in this regard. 2. I declare that this Dissertation is my own work. 3. I did not make use of another student’s previous work and I submit this as my own words. 4. I did not allow anyone to copy this work with the intention of presenting it as their own work. I, John Derrick Whitehead hereby declare that the following Dissertation is my own work and that I duly recognized and listed all sources for this study. Date: 3 December 2019 Student number: u12083802 __________________________ 2 Foreword I started my MTh and was unsure of a topic to cover. I knew that Hinduism was the religion I was interested in. Dr. Sukdaven suggested that I embark on the study of the concept of Maya. Although this concept provided a challenge for me and my faith, I wish to thank Dr. Sukdaven for giving me the opportunity to cover such a deep philosophical concept in Hinduism. This concept Maya is deeper than one expects and has broaden and enlightened my mind. Even though this was a difficult theme to cover it did however, give me a clearer understanding of how the world is seen in Hinduism. 3 List of Abbreviations AD Anno Domini BC Before Christ BCE Before Common Era BS Brahmasutra Upanishad BSB Brahmasutra Upanishad with commentary of Sankara BU Brhadaranyaka Upanishad with commentary of Sankara CE Common Era EW Emperical World GB Gitabhasya of Shankara GK Gaudapada Karikas Rg Rig Veda SBH Sribhasya of Ramanuja Svet. -

Srimath Vedanta Desika and His Land of Glory
SRIMATH VEDANTA DESIKA AND HIS LAND OF GLORY [C.R. DESIKAN, B. Sc., Tiruvaheendirapuram] On this 701st birth - year of Srimad Vedanta Desika, the greatest of gurus after Sri Bhagavad Ramanuja, the entire religious world of vaishnavism, has a right to rejoice and celebrate. Why? The cause is not unknown. For any doubt in sri bashya or any scripture text. We can find the answers in one of the several treatises of this great acharya. During the marriage ritual, the kanya dana mantra is repeated thus: "for the benefit of seven generations before, seven generations after me and me included, I am performing this gift." the life of an individual as given in Vedas is hundred years. On that basis one hundred years will be equal to one generation. Thus we have seen that this year heralds the eighth generation of the great preceptor. [Seven generations are over now.] Born at kancheepuram, this acharya learnt all his religious teachings from his uncle "Appullar". In his "sankalpa suryodaya", this acharya speaks of himself as "one who has recited the Sri Bhashya of Sri Ramanuja thirty times over." This piece of information is significant. His ability to master all the subjects taught so early in life, shows him as a prodigy. Having learnt, he wanted to acquire grace and spiritual powers. For this, he undertook a penance at the top of the small hill at Thiruvaheendrapuram. After some period of penance, the acharya was blessed with a "darsan" Sri Garuda Bhagawan, who in turn, have upadesam of Sri Hayagriva mantra and also presented him with an idol of this manifestation of god. -

SARVARTHA SIDDHI _OF ' _ SRI VEDANTADEéIKA ASrudy By Late Dr V.N. SESHADRI ACHARYA (of Oppiliappan Sannidhi) Formerly of Annamalai University Editors Dr V.K.S.N. RAGHAVAN and Dr S. PADMANABHAN (University of Madras) SRI VISISHTADVAITA RESEARCH CENTRE Madras 1993 copy rights Sri Visishtadvaita Research Centre First Edition : 1993 Published by .' Seshadri Acharya, a scion of a highly learned family, devoted to the propagation of Sanskrit and Vaishnavite philosophy over the past one century was, by profession, a professor of Sanskrit in Anna- malai University for al out three decades. The world of Vaishnax ism has known of the distinct contribution made towards our religion by his father Sri Navanitam Swami. and by his elder brother Sri V. N. Sriramadesi- kacharya. For his own part. Dr. Seshadriacharya has written a monumental work on the Sarvdrthasiddhi of Sri Desika. It is the commentary on his verse work, the Tattvamuktdkaldpa. Praised by pandits, this polemic work is. however, hardly studied or expounded, be- cause ofits erudition and intricate dialectics. It is such a work that the author took up for deep research and has presented an academic thesis on diverse systems and Sri Desika's defence of Visishtadvaita against them. The book consistently summarises the paths of Bhakti and Saranagati as issuing from the Visish- tadvaita concept of the Jiva Iswara relationship. We were fortunate to secure the services of two competent scholars to edit this book so as to make it of usefulness to students of Indian Philosophy.
