Taking its lead from the ideas of Benedict Anderson, the dissertation is based on the assumption that the nations are imagined cultural constructs; and that it is primarily the style in which it is imagined that gives a nation its distinctive character. Developing these ideas, the work turns its attention to the methods of such imagination and incorporating the ideas of Anthony D. Smith on national myths, devises a conceptual framework for making sense of the interrelations among the formation of nations, the writing of national histories and the creation of national myths. In light of this theoretical framework, the papers of the Congress are analyzed in detail in order to trace clues of the distinctive characteristics of Turkish nationalism –its peculiarities which were to a large extent dictated by the limits (real or imagined) in reaction to which Turkish nationalism developed. -
Turkish Nationalism and Turkish Islam: a New Balance
TURKISH NATIONALISM AND TURKISH ISLAM: A NEW BALANCE Nationalism and Islam have widely tended to be viewed as separate elements in the Turkish context. However, Islam has, in fact, been a foundational part of Turkish identity since the establishment of the Turkish Republic; and, on the popular level, Islam cannot actually be separated from nationalism. The equation of Turkish with Muslim identity was always tacitly understood; now it is explicit. Previous Turkish governments have, at times, won support by ap- pealing to both nationalist and religious sentiments as well but none has done this so successfully as the AKP… The current Turkish government’s rhetoric manages to appeal to both impulses, and that is why it is such a powerful brew. The AKP has been able to achieve what no other government has be- fore: wedding popular religious nationalism to the levers of government and remaining in power whilst doing so. Turkish nationalism – S so this narrative goes - is defined by the secularizing, modernizing example of Mustafa Kemal Atatürk, a positivist, military man with an almost religious faith in the ability of science to reshape society. Islam, with its appeals to multinational, multiracial unity, inevitably stood in the way of the “pure”, homogenous nation-state. Such an understanding was propagated by those early secularizing elites within Turkey itself, and largely accepted by observers outside the country for the better part of the past hundred years. -

GEOFFREY LEWIS Geoffrey Lewis Lewis 1920–2008 I. Life PROFESSOR GEOFFREY LEWIS LEWIS, a pioneer in Turkish Studies in Britain and an internationally admired scholar in the fi eld, was born in London on 19 June 1920. He received his schooling at University College School in Hampstead, following which, in 1938, he went up to St John’s College Oxford to read Classics. Having sat Honour Moderations in the spring of 1940, he joined the Royal Air Force in September of that year and served until 1945: he qualifi ed for his BA by War Decree and subsequently received his MA in 1945. At some point during his study for Honour Mods, his Latin tutor, sensing that he was getting stale, suggested that he take up Turkish as a hobby—it seems that the choice of Turkish came to him on the spur of the moment. Geoffrey took it seriously, however, and the opportunity to act on it came when he was posted to Egypt as a radar operator. He made contact with an elderly Turk in Alexandria, through whom, and through the painstaking comparison of classic English texts with their Turkish translations—these culled from the bookshops of London and sent to him by his wife, Raphaela, whom he had married in 1941—he taught him- self Turkish. Returning to Oxford in 1945, and by now wholly won over to Turkish, he consulted the Laudian Professor of Arabic, [Sir] Hamilton Gibb, FBA, who welcomed the prospect of expanding the curriculum in Oriental Studies to include Turkish but recommended that Geoffrey read for the BA in Arabic and Persian as essential background to the serious study of Turkish historically as well as in its modern form. -

The neo-liberal policies introduced after the 1980s, within a framework of a rapidly globalizing world, inevitably caused profound changes in the country. On the one hand, the process of joining the European Union (EU), and the constitutional changes required by the process known as the Copenhagen Criteria, brought more freedom of speech to the country, compared to the restricted civil liberties during the military regime of the early 1980s. This process, according to Ayşe Kadıoğlu, introduced “some of the most important parliamentary reforms toward the acknowledgment of different religious and ethnic identities in Turkey” (Kadıoğlu 2007: 292).1 On the other hand, the neo-liberal economic transformation resulted, much like everywhere else in the world, in an uneven distribution of wealth, making the gap between rich and poor wider. The process of globalization, and the rapid change in economic and social life, arguably created a rupture in the belief in the promise of the future, and resulted in people enquiring about the past in order to redefine their relationship, not just to the past, but also to the present. -

T U R A N I S M AN ASPECT OF TURKISH NATIONALISM In the last two decades of the nineteenth century, as is generally known, the Ottoman Empire drifted away from the British orbit and came increasingly under the influence of Germany. It was the time when the British Foreign Office, after half a century of adhering to the principle of the integrity of the Ottoman Empire as a barrier to Russian expansionism, began to tolerate, or even support, the nationalist movement of the Balkan peoples and their claims against Turkey. At the beginning of Gladstone’s administration, in 1880, Montenegro, thanks to British as well as to Rus sian favor, acquired an outlet at Dulcigno (Ulcinj);1 a year later Abd-ul- Hamid II was compelled to cede Thessaly to Greece;2 on several occasions thereafter London registered an interest in behalf of the Cretans and the Armenians and reminded the sultan of his obligation to introduce reforms according to Articles 23 and 61 of the Berlin Treaty.3 No less important in Turkish eyes were Great Britain’s attempts to carve off Ottoman territories or to establish a foothold in the periphery of the declining empire. The retention of Cyprus by the British and the occupation of Egypt, the former in tune with Greek aspirations,4 5the latter in overt opposition to Egyptian nationalism,6 were equally severe blows to 1. Is There a Turkish Islam? the Emergence of Convergence and Consensus
Journal of Muslim Minority Affairs, Vol. 24, No. 2, October 2004 Is There a Turkish Islam? The Emergence of Convergence and Consensus M. HAKAN YAVUZ Abstract This paper attempts to demonstrate that it is not only the universal principles of Islam that ground our everyday actions, but also the practical and immediate issues which we confront. Although Islam provides a universal set of principles to make life meaningful, I shall argue that these principles are vernacularized and localized in specific narratives. By offering seven diverse zones of Islam, I seek to bring this critical and dynamic distance into the forefront to understand that there is no universal model or a single highway to salvation but, instead, there are multiple ways of being and becoming a Muslim. In the first part of the paper, I seek to disaggregate the concept of ‘Islamic or Muslim world’ by identifying seven diverse competing and conflicting ‘zones’ of political Islam, each characterized by their conversion pattern, colonial legacy, type of nationalism and by the state–society relations and political economy that factor into these evolving separate zones. At the same time and under certain political conditions, one also sees the emergence of consensus and similar ‘public opinion’ across zones on various issues. After identifying the features of three of the seven zones (Arab, Persian and Turkish), the paper focuses on Sufism, the frontier legacy of the Ottoman state, and on the tax-based economy and the expanding political opportunity spaces, to account for the construc- tion of Islamic knowledge and practices in the Turkish zone. -

(Oxford: Lexington Books, October 2007) Chapter 7 Defensive and Liberal Nationalisms: The Kurdish Question and Modernization/Democratization Murat Somer Introduction Since the foundation of modern Turkey, the “Kurdish question” or Kürt Sorunu has been and continues to be the most politically challenging and violent problem facing Turkish modernization.1 In accordance with the arguments in this essay, it can be formulated as the question of how to include ethnic Kurds in this project of modernization as Kurds—with their distinct identity and, of course, voluntarily—without undermining the project’s major goals and its sustainability. This question can be subdivided into one historical and one current component. The historical component regards the periods of authoritarian nation-state formation in the 1920s and 1930s, and the periods of multiparty democracy from the 1950s onwards. To what extent, and how, could Turkish modernization have included Kurds during these periods in ways that were more democratic and respectful of Kurdish identity and culture?2 Answering this question is crucial to understanding the roots of the Kurdish issue. The current component of the Kurdish question should also take into account present circumstances. Currently, Turkish modernization is going through a transition to liberal democracy, the consolidation of which is yet uncertain. This process is occurring in an environment of revived and remade Kurdish nationalism within Turkey as well as in its Middle Eastern neighbors and Europe. Thus, given the limitations and opportunities that these conditions generate, the Kurdish question can be more specifically defined.
