TRAIL.PUGETSOUND.EDU THe PugeT Sound TRAIL THE STUDENT NEWSPAPER OF THE UNIVERSITY OF PUGET SOUND Volume 101, Issue 17 March 30, 2012 Established 1910 WETLANDS Lighthouse facilitates trip to Yakima reservation By ASHLEY GOFF Over spring break, a group of nine Puget Sound students made the long drive to the Yakima Indian Reservation to take part in a six-day community service trip. During the course of the trip, the students helped out around the community, cleaning up an elder- ly woman’s yard, building a bas- ketball court for the youth group, building a shed, constructing a fire pit and pitching in wherever need- ed. The team from Puget Sound was not alone on this trip, howev- er. Another group of ten students from Gordon College, a Christian college in Boston, also participated, creating the opportunity for fellow- ship and a chance to make lasting friendships not only in Yakima, but across the nation. As Tom Blackeagle, local co- ordinator for community service activities on the reservation, ex- plained, “My job is to find people in the community that are in need and bring them together with those who are willing to help.” But helping out in Native Ameri- can communities is not as easy as it appears, particularly for groups with a Christian message such as Lighthouse. Corey Greaves, reservation spiri- tual leader and founder of Mending Wings, the program that facilitated the trip, explained to the students that the natives on the Reservation do not consider themselves to be poor or of low economic standing according to the standards of the American economy.

  • Popular Music and Gays, Lesbians, Bisexuals, and Transgender People: an Annotated Bibliography and Discography
Page 1 of 35 Popular Music and Gays, Lesbians, Bisexuals, and Transgender People: An Annotated Bibliography and Discography. Compiled by Walt “Cat” Walker. Approved by the GLBTRT Resources Committee. Last revised January 12, 2017. TABLE OF CONTENTS Introduction 2 I. General Nonfiction 3 II. Memoirs & Biographies 9 III. Fiction 32 IV. Drama 33 V. Children & Teens 34 VI. DVDs 35 Page 2 of 35 Introduction Gays, lesbians, bisexuals, and transgender people have always participated in creating popular music. In recent years, the visibility of LGBTQ people in the music world has increased, and more popular music has been created that openly describes the LGBTQ experience. There has also been an increase in books and films related to LGBTQ visibility in popular music, both in fiction and nonfiction. This bibliography includes resources about gay men, lesbians, bisexuals, and transgender persons involved in the popular music field. The books have all been published in print, and many of them may also be found as e-books. Separate sections contain memoirs, novels, plays, and children’s and teen books. Several LGBT popular music-related DVDs are also listed. Each book and DVD has a link to the OCLC WorldCat record (when available) where you can see which libraries hold the item. Most of this resource is comprised of a discography of popular music recordings by LGBTQ artists. It is not meant to be complete, but many recordings still available in CD format for each artist are listed, and several are annotated. Many of these performers’ songs can now also be found on streaming music services and online digital music websites.

  • Facing the Future with a Foot in the Past Americana, Nostalgia, and the Humanization of Musical Experience
Facing the Future with a Foot in the Past Americana, Nostalgia, and the Humanization of Musical Experience by Christine Sarah Steinbock A thesis submitted to the Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Affairs in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Arts in Music and Culture Carleton University Ottawa, Ontario © 2014 Christine Sarah Steinbock ii Abstract Facing the Future with a Foot in the Past Americana, Nostalgia, and the Humanization of Musical Experience Americana, a musical genre defined by its place in a lineage of roots music styles and a nostalgic outlook is enjoying increasing mainstream popularity in response to general societal unease about the fast pace of social change and the increasing presence of technology in everyday life. Americana artists’ invocations of the past cultivate a psychic landscape of collective memory that quells fears of change by asserting the sustained value of the past. Instead of actively resisting social and technological change Americana artists, listeners and promoters embrace technology in service of a nostalgically- motivated humanization and disintermediation of musical performance and consumption. Gillian Welch and Dave Rawlings (who perform as “Gillian Welch”) and their 2011 album The Harrow & the Harvest are analyzed vis-à-vis the ways in which their musical and visual invocations of the rural past dialogue with a psychic landscape of collective memory. iii Acknowledgements I want to express my gratitude for the opportunity to study in the Music and Culture program at Carleton and the privilege of working alongside such dedicated scholars, professors and fellow students alike. I want to especially thank my supervisor, Dr.

  • Perfume Genius on Being Honest
April 7, 2017 - Perfume Genius is the project of Tacoma, Washington-based singer/songwriter, Mike Hadreas. He’s released four albums: Learning (2010), Put Your Back N 2 It (2012), Too Bright (2014), and No Shape (2017). His main collaborator is his partner, Alan Wyffels. Hadreas is active on Twitter, where he often jokes about wearing a giant blouse. As told to Brandon Stosuy, 1896 words. Tags: Music, Process, Collaboration, Anxiety. Perfume Genius on being honest “I’m really bad at being busy. To be honest, I'm bad at not being busy, too.” What is it like being in a creative partnership with someone who’s also your partner? It’s a lot. We’re around each other 24 hours a day. Just relationship wise, you have to learn how to do that. He’s studied music and went to school for music, which is something I didn’t do. So, he hears things differently than I do. He teaches piano, so he’ll go to work doing that and then I’ll go in my room and write. Then when he comes home I play him what I’ve made. In the beginning, I’ll have mostly the mood and the spirit of it. He can hear the actual music and the structure and the chords more than I do in the moment. So, if it’s good, we can kind of balance each other out. Is there ever time, when you’re working on a project, and you just need to find space? In a way. We’re very different creatively.
