It’s a time to remember the lives lost, the battles won and to better inform ourselves of the gay scene’s most prevalent health issue. And most of all, GET TESTED!

20% of those with HIV don’t know they have the virus!

According to latest figures in a new Public Health England report, around 20% of all people living with HIV in the UK are unaware of their HIV status. This means they are delaying treatment, which impacts their health and reduces their life expectancy. It also means they could be unknowingly infecting people they sleep with. It is important that anyone who is not testing, should be. Chelsea and Westminster Hospital’s sexual health clinics have Testing Times arranged some special events and set up new services to make getting tested even easier. There doesn’t seem to be a month that goes by without a research laboratory or newspaper declaring, rather sensationally, that they are close to finding a cure for HIV. Of course, the reality of this would be welcome news. But how many of these sensationalist headlines are grounded in actual, real facts? I had no idea that I had it, I went for a test in September 2011 and then I kept on missing these calls from the clinic, and I thought it couldn’t be anything too big, but then eventually I picked up a call and they were like ‘you need to come in.’ I was eventually diagnosed on the 10th December. I felt numb initially. And then it was the next day that I spent the whole day in bed crying. I didn’t want to get up. It’s been two years now, and I still don’t think that’s quite enough time to fully come to terms with your diagnosis, but you know it gets easier by the day. I’m not yet on medication because my viral load and CD4 counts I got only are quite robust. In terms of telling my friends, I didn’t actually tell most of them myself – I was booked to DJ at a club in April 2012 and I’d just had a falling out with a former best friend at that time. « messages They went on the Facebook group and started posting about me having HIV. Considering 3 or 4,000 people were invited to that event, pretty much everyone knew. of love and But on the other side, I got only messages of love and support from my friends after that happened. I haven’t experience any HIV-phobia first hand to my face, I support don’t know what people are saying about me behind my back! And there’s only been one guy I liked who backed away when he from my found out I was positive. I can’t blame him for that because I kinda understand it; even though he can accept that HIV doesn’t change me as a person, he didn’t want to take that risk, however small friends it may be. However, I do think a lack of education and awareness about HIV, not just in the gay community, but in the wider world, might contribute to this thinking. However, it wasn’t a lack of education that contributed to me getting it. I wasn’t having lots of unprotected sex, it was a one-off and a silly mistake. Whether he knew he had HIV or not doesn’t matter to me, it can’t change anything now, it’s about moving forward. At the end of the day it is a Russian Roulette: you could sleep with 1,000 people and not pick up HIV, or you can sleep with one person and get it. It has given me a new take on life in a way, I just think that as a DJ I have a duty to lift people up and it’s about moving forward, » you know. 8

QX_977_Me, my life & HIV.indd 8 26/11/2013 19:23 ‘Matt’ Bartender, 20 I have no I was diagnosed late September. « I had a really bad sero-conversion sympathy – which is the beginning stages of it – so I was ill for about three weeks and I was admitted to for anyone hospital for four days. Even the doctor didn’t know what was going having on; I hadn’t eaten, I’d lost about three stone, being sick. Before that unprotected I was going to the doctor’s every day, saying ‘I’ve never been this ill, sex. I have no I visibily look like death’, and they just sent me away. One of them sympathy for said I had vertigo. Had my step-mum not disputed it and demanded a blood test, they myself. Good would have dismissed me again, but after they took the blood test the luck, because doctor who was going to send me away apologised so much. My liver you’re asking was on the brink of collapsing, I was totally screwed. I had to be put on a for it. drip for energy and water. Four days down the line they said you can go home. They said they didn’t know what it was, it was an » acute viral illness. Two days later we went back and they said the results had come back inconclusive, that I might have HIV. I was in total shock. You don’t believe it. You just brush it under the carpet, it’s too big. Too big to cope with. In terms of just coming out of uni and looking for what career you want to go into, and dealing with what medication you’re going to be on for the rest of your life and coming to terms with an illness that’s never going to go away, it’s too much to deal with. I’m quite lucky with the medication, usually you have severe side effects but – fingers crossed – I’ve had nothing, and it’s been about three weeks now, and usually the main side effects kick in within a week. I started the medication now because of sero-conversion. The more ill you are, the better your outcome is, because your body can fight it better. My family are really bad dealing with it because they’re so emotional. They’re constantly crying and because my family are so weak, I’m a lot stronger. Particularly over the last few weeks, I’ve just got really cold, that’s the only way I can describe it. It’s not me consciously doing it, it’s also subconscious, the bigger the issue the more I’ll close it up. If something’s a shock to your body, then you’ll try and hide it away. I was having unsafe sex. I didn’t really do one-night stands, but I did do online dating and with gay people, particularly when you first come out, you feel like you want a boyfriend. And then you’re on this mad search for a boyfriend and it never works, so you break up with one person and you’re upset so you jump on to the next person because you never want to be single. And then before you know it, you’ve got a line of men that you’ve been with, and it’s like “shit, what have I done?” And then bang, it’s too late. I haven’t told many people. I think people look down on people with HIV so I don’t want anyone feeling that I’m a weak person or any less of a person than I was before, so I’ve told my immediate, best friends and I’ve not told anyone else. I have no sympathy for anyone having unprotected sex. I have no sympathy for myself. Good luck, because you’re asking for it. But if you get diagnosed: deal with it how you want to deal with it. There’s nothing worse than trying to deal with something and having people telling you that way is wrong.

I was diagnosed on the 1st October, 2013. I really didn’t expect it. I know how I got it, I was having unprotected sex and I didn’t care. I just thought if anything would happen I would get something curable like Chlamydia or something. I never thought I would have HIV. Usually these bad things happen to other people, a neighbour or someone across the street. You just never think it will happen to you. I trusted people too much as well, if I asked them if they were clean and they said ‘yeah’, I would ask some more questions but that would be it. Before my partner and I met I was abroad in a different country and I think that’s where I got it from, because I wasn’t careful. « I was testing every three months, but I would go to my doctor and tell him I wanted The only to get checked for sexual things. QX_977 DJ OF THE WEEK.indd 21 26/11/2013 19:04 GABRIELLE @ G-A-Y 23/11/13 Heaven under the Arches, Villiers Street, Charing WORDS AND PHOTOS BY Cross, WC2N 6NG CHRIS JEPSON

ONCE AGAIN our weekly trip down to G-A-Y was chock full of surprises but this time no naked divas or boy band drop-ins, it was all about the top notch talent on stage. First up was X-Factor evictee Sam Callahan, and while we were never wowed by the songs he was given in the ITV shows, live on stage he really shone. From Ed Sheeran to a bit of dubstep and the Goo Goo Dolls, his trio of tracks showed versatility and really rather good vocals, all topped off by the tightest tummy we have seen since Van Damme was a Universal Soldier. The second show of the night was from UK soul legend Gabrielle, celebrating the anniversary of her chart topping début single, ‘Dreams’, with ‘Now and Always: 20 Years of Dreaming’, the double CD retrospective of her career. She treated us to no less than 6 tracks with gorgeous smoky vocals including hits ‘Out Of Reach’, ‘Rise’ and of course ‘Dreams’ with nothing but an acoustic guitar, two backing singers and the really rather cute beat boxer Hobbit providing accompaniment. Considering most of the audience were in nappies when ‘Dreams’ came out she went down a storm and everyone knew all the words to sing along. Looks like this retrospective album is not so much a career finale but a launch pad to the next chapter, and we can’t wait.

YOU CAN THROW all the hard-bodied gogos in tiny Aussie Bum undies you like at a podium crowded with mega-pouting transsexuals and a screaming diva on a mic that you like, but to us there are really just three things we want from a decent night out: hot tunes, a cool crowd, and a venue that never fails to deliver. Last week’s third birthday bash by TheMenWhoFell2Earth was all of that and then some. By half-midnight, East Bloc was shaking its basement foundations to the impressive selection of funked-up, disco-tinged, deep-fused whatever you wanna call it house sounds of TheMenWhoFell2Earth. As the duo switched between deck-control, the music escalated to show that the gay scene really can deliver quality away from the music- by-numbers sounds of other queer dancefloors. Then came the modern legend that was Jim Stanton to show that this man knows his tunes beyond the fabled confines of his own Horse Meat Disco. It was a night you should be looking to visit soon because we’re already a little bit in love with TheMenWhoFell2Earth.

THURSDAY NIGHT has long been about looking your best and heading down to Room Service, and usually waking up lying next to a mysterious Adonis. However, what happens when you’re in the amorous mood on a Monday? Or you’re not looking your best? Or you can’t get on the list? Well that’s where new mobile site GPScort.com comes in. It’s like Grindr for escorts, so you can find yourself an available hot guy, any day of the week. It had its launch party at last week’s Room Service and, of course, we went along. It was quite some night, with the GPScort guys covering us in stickers, plying us with drinks and then taking our photos as soon as we arrived, after which we stumbled onto the dancefloor, where we caught Kris Di Angelis playing his ‘Hate’ project track featuring our very own Patrick Cash! And it seemed GPScort wasn’t the only one celebrating a birth as we then bumped into our favourite prince of dancehall, Mark-Ashley Dupé, celebrating his birthday with a big bottle of Grey Goose. So after many vodkas, and hot hunks, we were finally ready to leave, upon which those kind guys at GPScort thrust an energy drink into our hands, to ensure we didn’t fall asleep on the night bus… Or the hot Swede!

I FEEL SORRY FOR anyone who wasn’t at Energy Bears at Barcode on Saturday night! Robb White’s hirsute disco funhouse had bears and their hunters, fags and their hags mixing it up with 5 DJs, 3 porn stars, 2 dance floors and 1 dusky chill-out room making this a night to remember! The lights! The music! The porn stars! The sexy musclebears! All bumpin’n’humpin edging’ us closer, closer... Front bar DJs-about-town Nico De Ceglia and Rob C charged us up with funky urban classic re-mixes pierced with crisp electro-tech beats and undercurrents of throbbin’ bass. Sinister sounds perfect for snaking our way through to the main bar where Mr. White himself split the decks with Mickey Galliano and Severino’s self-described “get-your-tits-out-for-the-boys” groovy, uplifting, deep house. And they did! Damn, these guys are hot! (I mean if you go for the young, toned, muscled, hairy/smooth beefy chest kinda guys.) Add to the mix all the funky folk who are really into their music and are out to have fun. It’s no wonder Energy Bears has been a club mainstay for 4 years. Just as the music hit hardest, up on the center stage popped British porn Bottom of the Year, Justin King, joined by jockstrapped Aaron Steele and Drew Diver showing a worked up crowd what they do best till sweat poured off the ceiling as hostess Raoul salsa- ed her way into our hearts. But mine has to go to the 2 Eduardos: one bartender from Brazil who “loves it here because there is less homophobia than back home.” And the other, from Croatia, who gave me a large drink cuz he liked my T-shirt… It’s yours baby, anytime you like I’ll be glad to leave it on your floor.

What was the first gay venue you visited? The first gay place was actually a club ‘Bangs’ in the 70s. I remember boys dancing together to ‘Chez Chez La Femme’ by The Savannah Band. I felt very liberated especially as I was with my ‘sort of’ girlfriend Laura who kept telling me I was gay. She was right! You’ve been playing more gigs on the gay scene recently. How does it feel to reconnect with the gay community? I’ve never been exclusively a gay scene DJ because most gay promoters are too mean to book me! [Laughs] I prefer the harder gay places like Fire because they seem to get my style. I don’t mind if the crowd is gay or straight as long are they are into the music. Tell us about your new album. It’s not a dance record, but it has groove with the reggae stuff and bits of 70s funk. I’m not sure I’d even call it a ‘pop’ record because modern pop is very stylised. I think it’s a great bunch of songs, and it has an uplifting and positive vibe!

SANDRA WAS IN top form at the Old Ship last Saturday, dragging a poor Australian boy on to the stage, slagging him off for dodging taxes and pissing off back to convict land! Then her roving eye landed on barman Nick, renamed Miss Ross for the night, and his favourite punter Miss Hepitotass! When a poor New Zealand girl fell into Sandra’s warpath of hilarity, the mistress of muck immediately enquired if her tits where real and, before she could answer, hit them with her microphone! ‘Yep, they’re real,’ attested the anarchic performer. Everyone was in stitches for the whole time she was on stage, bringing the house down on the Old Ship, especially when she was ribbing the DJ who dared to miss her cue – or was it part of the act? Apparently he had to wipe off Sandra’s semen from the CD, we’re not saying anything! A mixed crowd of younger guys and a few older punters were congregated for the evening’s fun, and from the smiling faces and sound of laughter, everyone was having a whale of a time, even if she was twenty minutes late! (Waiting for the driver apparently.) Till next Sunday at the Old Ship, where a different cabaret star takes over each week!

QX 977 MASTER 1.indd 39 26/11/2013 18:23 Being Positive! Diagnosed HIV positive in May 1986, at the height of the AIDS epidemic, Spike Rhodes has been consciously open about his status from Day One. Having spent five of those years with a T-cell count of only thirteen (normal count is over seven hundred) and overcoming several AIDS defining illnesses, Spike now lives by Jason Reid a full and healthy life thanks to modern medical advances. He has performed in, created and directed drag theatre companies on the scene for over thirty years – with two of those early companies being set up specifically to raise money for HIV charities – and today he leads celebrated drag theatre company, The Drama Queens. To tie in with World AIDS Day, Jason Reid spoke to Spike about living as an openly positive gay man, and the issues surrounding it...

‘COMING OUT’ as positive wasn’t something that Spike had to think twice about. At a horrific time for the gay community, he was already visiting hospitals on a regular basis, watching on as close friends suffered. He told me: “When I got my diagnosis there was a lot of fear. It was a truly terrifying period. What I found was that people were scared of being open because it would usually mean, or they’d fear that, things would just fall apart: relationships, families. Nobody knew how to react. The only other openly positive person on the scene was Adrella. I thought by being open, too, it may hopefully help other people.” Using his own status as a mechanism to support others has always been very important to Spike: “I’ve always wanted people to realise it doesn’t have to be a lonely place and we could all help each other through it. I never thought of myself as an advocate. I’ve always just been of the thinking that AIDS has rights. Just like any other section of society. But I was never banging a big old drum; I just said, if anyone wanted to talk to me about it they could. And that’s what happened.” That societal stigma that attaches itself to living openly positive is one that many people do have trouble dealing with – preventing them from disclosing their status to family, friends and possible partners. It is, if you will, one of the last great taboos, even today. “There were occasions where I felt as though I was under the spotlight. For example, if I met a guy in a bar/club, it was always something I told them first. I wanted it out of the way. I felt that was my responsibility, not because I was going to have unsafe sex; I wanted to be honest with them. People’s reactions varied from the truly horrified to other positive guys thanking me and empathising. Those moments made all the rejections worthwhile.” Thirty years on, and although the world has changed dramatically, Spike believes attitudes have been slower to change: “As controversial as it may sound, I disagree with the language the health agencies use at times. A HIV test should be something that people want to do. Especially so as an active gay man. And sadly there are still a lot of people who don’t test, which is why the virus spreads. Ultimately, It comes down to education,” Spike says. “The governments over the years have let down the gay community and health agencies big time. The agencies can only do so much. If HIV and sex education is not taught at school level wide enough then the message can’t get out there. It upsets me when I hear of parents opting out of their children learning about it. They need to know. It’s Photo: Chris Jepson part of the human psyche that I’ve never really understood.” Living and coping with the physical and emotional effects of HIV is something that has changed, however, thanks to antiretroviral combination therapy and increased support. I asked Spike what his message would be, as someone who has gone through it all in the worst possible way and come out the other end, to the next generation of gay men. He told me: “Love yourself, love your body and have a great deal of fun. It’s a fabulous scene out there. But always look after your body. Don’t be embarrassed or ashamed if you slip up one time. Go and see someone, get tested, and be reassured that they will not judge you. They will look after you. It’s the best policy to know your status.”

Hi Dr A, I am trying to get cut before going to Miami in a couple week’s time. I’m doing fine and have cut out carbs, but it’s the fat I am confused about. I thought that cutting out fat would also be a good idea, but then the nurse at my GP practice told me that you need fats in your diet. But I have always thought fats are bad – what’s your opinion? Jason T

Hi Jason, I’m very jealous of your trip to Miami! I’m not sure how far you are taking your dieting but crash diets are not good for you. In fact, research suggests rapid weight loss can slow your metabolism, leading to future weight gain, and deprives your body of essential nutrients. What’s more, crash diets can weaken your immune system and increase your risk of dehydration, heart palpitations, and if repeated often enough weaken your heart through loss of heart muscle. Plus, cut too many calories and your body starts to burn muscles as well as fat. If you cut too many calories your body thinks it’s starving so it starts to conserve and store them, which actually reduces the rate at which you burn body fat. You are doing the right think by cutting calories from carbs but you need to replace them by eating more protein. This safeguards your muscle.
