Jeff Torrey - Just around the corner...

President’s Message.. We are all on a journey

The other day I was watching the Patriots game and they lost the AFC championship. There was no need to watch the post game show and 60 minutes was featuring a 25 minute segment on. the Make-a-Wish foundation. Talking about a boy that had had 3 bone marrow transplants, and wanted to see Australia before he passed away. I thought of Ivy and the work she has done for NCR and the NH Make-a-Wish foundation...year in and year out. How proud I was to be a part of NCR and to know her, to know the work she does, how she keeps on keepin’ on. I was asked to go to the Zone 1 meeting out in Albany, NY and discuss issues related to PCA. This time I rode out the MA turnpike in a 2006 Carerra S. I had to watch my speed. Remembering the first time I drove that road myself. It was 1984 and I was driving a 1960 Ford Falcon 4 door sedan. On my way out to Cummington, MA. for a two month stay as an artist in residence at the Cummington Community for the Arts. I had just finished a two month stay at The Edward McDowell Colony in Peterborough, NH. I was scared. My parents told me I was on the wrong path. The car was running on 5 cylinders and lost speed going up the hills. I am in my 50’s now and my time is more valuable to me. I have formed a few alliances in the club. We were in Bethel Maine in the fall and I was asked about the itinerary and my control on things related to our weekend away. I said that I have no control, my job is to create an opportunity. What folks choose to do with it is out of my control. Bill said to me “you have arrived”, I knew what he was talking about and I knew that he understood what I had to say. Many of us have given too much and have lost special people along the way. We are all on that journey. Any questions can be directed to Jeff Torrey President@NCR- PCA.org

Feb-March 2016 9 Northlander Bob Futterrer - GET ‘ER DONE!!

A few weeks ago Laura, Molly (our new rescue dog) and I took a walk around the golf course we play at. The grass was growing, bulbs were coming up and it looked like the ground crews could almost cut the grass. Then, 8-10 inches of SNOW, one day before our Retro Automotive Products, Tech Session, but more of that later in this issue. Ok, I’ve been getting a lot done on my 914 since my last article. After looking over everything in order to get started, I found that there are a lot of things that I did not quite finish before I moved on to the next step. So I decided to just start in the front of the car and work my way to the back. The aluminum shroud for the 944 radiator, was done or had patterns made. So I finished making and attaching that. I still can’t find a couple of the metal coolant tubes that I know I made earlier, that attach the radiator to the motor. I’m sure they will turn up. Next I had to finish altering the fuel cell to accept the Subaru fuel pump. Then off to finish welding bars, trimming, sanding and priming the front sheet metal. There is still a lot of work to be done. I plan on finishing the steering, brakes and seat mounts in the next few days. It’s been way too long and it’s time to, “GET ‘ER DONE” Fud Updated Photo’s on the 914...

KMC Open House .. by Bob Futterrer

What a great turnout for Kachel Motor Company’s 2nd Annual Open House and Customer Appreciation Night on January 8th. Tim Kachel and his crew opened their doors to celebrate with their friends and customers. The Italian Buffett that Tim provided was awesome and enjoyed by all. Tim had many interesting and exotic cars on display including numerous Porsches, a Ferrari, a Noble Bob Futterrer - GET ‘ER DONE!! and a restored Datsun 240Z. Also on display were samples of Tim’s outstanding metal fabrication work. One of the things that stands out, about KMC’s Shop, is how organized and clean it is for a full service shop. The 5 second rule could easily be 10 seconds here!! It was a relaxing evening and a great chance for everyone to mingle and roam around the shop and do a little “bench racing”. We had a great turnout from NCR, including the Ivy would like this stunning car.. majority of our DE Team. While Jeff Torrey and I didn’t stay the whole night, in talking with Tim a few days later, I found out that the some guests didn’t leave until around 3:00 a.m. the next morning. Without mentioning any names, I know one particular customer, who stayed to the very end, traveled all the way from Portland ME. I’m already looking forward to the 3rd Annual Open House. Yankee Swap 2016 aka “Has Anyone Seen My Porsche Flag?”.. by Rich Willey - Photos by David Churcher and Ivy Cowles

On January 30th approximately 20 NCR members gathered a free car detailing by Porsche of Stratham. So don’t be at Patty B’s in Dover NH for our annual Yankee Swap afraid to write an article for Northlander. You may not get luncheon. All arrived by 12:30 and had time to catch up a prize, but you will find it rewarding nevertheless. with folks and hear how their winter was going. One NCRer is sorting out his new solar electric system, while another is pushing to finish a Subaru powered 914. Our most seasoned NCR member seemed as spry as ever, and our new President and VP are settling into their new leadership roles. I’d say it’s been a good winter so far especially since the abnormally warm weather meant that two members drove their P-cars. But I had hoped to see a certain couple’s new M-car. (No, not that one. This is Italian). Oh well, next time. Time to eat. Planned as a buffet, we ultimately were able to select from the menu and sample a wider variety of appetizers, sandwiches and entrees. Everyone seemed to enjoy their selections. After we ordered, Ivy explained the swap rules and numbers were drawn to determine Rich displaying the mighty fine Porsche clock he opened the order for selecting a swap item. Wouldn’t you know up.. it, the organizer, Ivy, drew last, and got #1 so she went first and last. Those of you who have been to these know that booze has been a very popular swap item. This time was no exception with about half the gifts being wine, liquor, and even a NH Liquor Store gift card. We may be a drinking club with a car problem! We also had a chance at a model remote control Porsche, lottery tix, a Porsche clock, LED shop light, and a Manual Gearbox Preservation Society T-shirt among many others. While bottles were swapped frequently, one person went after the liquor store gift card only to find the box it came in empty. Seems a certain someone wanted it very badly so she pocketed the gift card before the swap. Gotta keep your eyes wide open with this crowd. But the most coveted prize was opened by Marilyn early on. A Porsche mug, coffee table books and Porsche crest flag/banner. It was swapped several times with a very happy taker and much disappointed giver-upper after each swap. It passed through your scribe’s hands a few times and alas ended up in a late swap with someone else who will not be mentioned in this story. But despite missing out on the flag, we left happy with the LED shop light and the liquor store gift certificate (I double checked to be sure Many great items to choose from. Which one will you it was in the gift box). go home with.. Many more events are planned for 2016 and I hope you are able to get out to several to enjoy your Porsche with your Porsche friends. PS.. No one volunteered to write this article even though Ivy said there was a prize for the writer. So I said I’d do it, as I haven’t written anything this past year. The prize was

Off Road In Your Porsche - Or What A Cayenne Can NOT Do.. by Steve Bader

Some of you may have noticed an event scheduled for last height was pretty low before failure due to lost traction on October 3 inviting you to learn the off road capabilities of the downhill wheel. Independent four wheel suspension your Porsche at Overland Experts (OEX) in East Haddam, CT allows for great high speed handling, but was useless in (www.overlandexperts.com). I contacted Erik Eisensmith, crossing small obstacles. No electronic settings allowed an the Director of Training a week before the event and actual shift in power to a useful wheel. A hill climb was learned I was the only one to inquire. He graciously invited next, and here the Cayenne performed well. We had to me down with my new Cayenne Diesel and offered to give pass on the log crossing due to the very minimal ground me and a friend a private session in my car and theirs, and clearance and wheel travel of the stock Cayenne. The Land in return I promised to write about the experience and Cruiser with beam suspension and massive suspension spread the word about this fantastic experience. travel made easy work of the practice exercises. My novice co-driver found the clear instructions and the hands on For many years I have attended primarily HPDE events demonstrations easy to follow. I also had no real off road with PCA, BMWCCA and others. Although many would experience prior to this and found the things we could say I still drive rather slowly, generally I enjoyed the high accomplish pretty amazing. speed aspect of these driving events. This was an entirely different event, with the average traveling speed staying south of 5 mph. However the similarities between the OEX training and the racetrack instruction I give were remarkable. Our day started driving about 90 minutes south of Boston meeting Erik and Don Gerlach, our instructors for the day, at the Hadlyme Country Store. Point of information - the only restroom facilities were an outhouse by the ferry, and porta-potties at OEX. We ordered our lunch, had a cup of coffee, and followed them in my Cayenne as they turned off a perfectly good road directly onto a path into the woods. The OEX Connecticut facility is “over 2000 acres, with varying terrain including mud, rock, topsoil, clay, water, and glacial sand deposit”. About 2 inches of rain the day before emphasized the mud and water. The Erik demonstrating off road vehicle dynamics classroom is a cabin filled with demonstration parts from full differentials and driveshafts, to suspensions and wheels and tires. Erik spent about an hour describing how the mechanical and electronic systems in the vehicle would help and hinder our ability to successfully navigate off road challenges. The curriculum was well organized and covered differential, suspension, transmission, momentum and tire pressure. Over 15 years of practice clearly showed in the way he clarified these topics for me and my novice driver guest. We then moved outside to evaluate the systems on my new Cayenne and contrast them with their main teaching vehicle - a 1989 Toyota Land Cruiser 75. Once Don stopped laughing at my off road Cayenne, we tested the various transmission and differential settings, and quickly determined that my best bet for an off road adventure Cayenne demonstrating hill climb abilities was something like the 1/4 mile well maintained dirt road to my Berkshire home. Cresting a blind hill going both up and down was a blast, and simulating a ‘failed’ hill climb by letting the car roll We completed several exercises during the 5 hour day, backwards with only engine braking until we bounced to with a break for lunch back at the cabin. The first stop was the flat bottom got my stomach up near my throat. I did the training pit where we tested the Cayenne’s ability to learn that Porsche Hill Control DOES operate in reverse, climb a sand hill with one wheel. The climbing angle and important to know if you are stuck at the top somewhere.

Feb-March 2016 17 Northlander Once we mastered the practice it was time to head out into the woods. We took turns with the instructors in and out of the Toyota around a large loop starting with a lateral incline, moving to crossing a deep gorge, and then up and down an obstacle course with large boulders, fallen trees, massive holes and steep uphill and downhill sections. Watching the vehicle tilt and bob from outside was as instructive as driving. One of us would serve as a spotter in the tight technical sections to guide the driver to the spot with the best place to put the wheels.

The view down the hill climb

OEX provides training for military, law enforcement, and civilian drivers. They also run domestic and international Over the river and through the woods expeditions providing support, vehicles and arrangements. They have facilities in California, Virginia and North Carolina. Their experience and professionalism was extraordinary. This was a day well spent learning about a whole new world of driving - at a half mile per hour. It was every bit as exciting as 150 up the esses at Watkins Glen. When you see it on the schedule next year - SIGN UP! You won’t be disappointed.

It was heartwarming and emotional to read these words again. Everyone was so kind and generous. I still miss him.

When I bought my 308 a few years ago, the previous owner told me to visit FerrariChat to learn more about the car and how to work on it. Within a week or so on F-Chat, posting the usual newbie questions, Tech Q& A guru Verell Boaen invited me to bring my car to his house to help me out. Talk about luck - living so close to Verell! Of course, I took him up on his offer and drove over the following weekend. I knew I was in the right place when I drove up the long driveway and saw his red 308 parked outside. Verell came out and introduced himself, then said something that changed my life forever: “Lets throw it on the lift.”

Say What!? A four post lift has a rectangular layout with a column at each corner and a set of “runways” on each side. The car He led me into the garage and there before me was is driven up a set of ramps onto the lift and, once lifted, something I had never seen before: a two-post hydraulic it rests on the runways. In this type of lift, the car remains car lift in someone’s home garage. “Wow,” I thought, sitting on its wheels and suspension while in the air. The “Verell must be rich! Maybe I really don’t have enough disadvantage is that, in order to work on the suspension, money to own a Ferrari after all.” We pulled my car into you must use a jack package to jack the car up while on the garage, slipped the lifting arms beneath it, lined the lift. However, this kind of lift is easier and faster to them up with the lifting points on the frame and up she get the car up on. Just drive it on and lift. The sides of the went. Within minutes, we were standing under the car, car are accessible without a post in the way, so the doors inspecting, tinkering, and cleaning. Now this is the way can be fully opened. It’s also a better option for storing to work on a car. The following winter I replaced my rear a car since it sits normally on its suspension. Some four suspension bushings with the car on jack stands at home. It post lifts can be purchased with a caster option as well, was then that I decided I needed a lift of my own. Working so they can be rolled around in a large shop. Even without on a car is so much easier when you have one and you casters, many four post lifts do not need to be bolted to don’t have to crawl around on the floor or worry about the floor, so they can be moved to a new garage easily. the car falling off a jack stand. A lift of my own would Moving a two post lift is a real project since it must be round out my new garage! But after getting to know a that must be plugged. lot more car enthusiasts since I bought my 308,1 realized that having a home lift is not uncommon anymore. A lift If you do a lot of body work, need a lift for additional car can be used not only for working on a car, but storing storage and only do minimal under-car work, particularly one as well. But what kind of lift to buy, and how much suspension, the 4 post lift is probably better. If you do more would it cost? drive train, suspension and restoration work, a 2 post lift will probably work out better. You need to choose the type TYPES OF LIFTS of lift you want based on your needs. I would like to have a lift of each type, but so far my wife isn’t going for it! Lifts can be broken down into three general categories: two post, four post and mid-rise (sometimes called a A mid-rise lift is a smaller, portable unit that sets up under “scissors” lift). A two post lift has two large columns, a car and lifts by rising up from flat into an X shape. It one on each side of the car, that bolt into the concrete takes up space sitting directly under the car, generally floor. Each column has two arms that come out. They right between the doors, so it has limited usefulness for swivel back and forth and telescope in and out so they working on the underside of the car. Typically you can can reach the lifting points on the car. You end up with 4 still reach engine areas and of course you can work on chassis lifting points, two on each side. The advantage of the suspension easily. While this lift cannot go very high a two post lift is that, when the car is lifted, the wheels (usually about four feet), it still beats jack stands by a mile hang down with no load on the suspension. The lift has and has the added benefit of being portable. Two guys very little interference with the car so you can work on can throw it in the back of a pickup truck and take it some virtually anything, except perhaps the doors, which are place else easily, something that can definitely NOT be said obscured by the posts (this can be reduced somewhat about the other lifts here. This kind of lift is often carried with an asymmetrical lift). While you can store a car on a by “mobile mechanics” who will come and work on your two post lift, there is some question if long-term storage car in your garage, rather than theirs. Unless you have a with the suspension unloaded is good for it. It certainly particular need for a portable lift, most people find that gives the springs a little R&R but may not be good for the a two post or a four post is a more useful product for a shocks long term. It has not harmed my 308, which spends home garage. 3 months a year suspended in mid-air.

Since we added a Mondial to the collection, I store my 308 above the Mondial on the lift for the winter, which has added a parking space to my garage. Overall, it was one of the best uses of $2,500.00 I can think of, proving that you don’t have to be rich to have a lift. Furthermore, my friends come and visit more often when they need to put their cars up for anything from simple oil changes to more complicated work. If you have a lift, your friends will come... and you can make them bring the beer. Need I say more?

LIFTING SPECS A lift has a rated weight. This is the amount that the lift can safely hold with a large safety de-rating factor. A typical lift might be rated for 8,000 pounds. That means the lift can carry 8,000 pounds safely without worrying about anything breaking or the car falling on your head. Manufacturers typically test lifts to twice their rated capacity. Unless you happen to have a Suburban or a truck that you need to lift, most people don’t need a lift rated at more than 6,000 or 8,000 pounds. Considering that my 308 weighs in around 3,000 pounds, I can technically lift twice the weight of a 308 on my “small” 6,000 pound lift.

THE BEST DEAL Many people buy a lift without considering the used option. Nearly every city has at least one if not several Cont’d on to March 2016 automotive equipment dealers that sell lifts. You can buy these smaller lifts used for 1/3 manmade snow, but I doubt I will get my daily lift expense to 1/ 2 of the new price. What an interesting Saturday Morning we had on February 6th. Matt Alldredge, owner of Retro Automotive Products, in Claremont, NH, hosted about 20 members to an open house at his business. Retro Automotive is a unique business that restores and sells used Porsche parts from 356’s to the latest models. One of Matt’s goals is to provide clean, quality used Porsche parts, to his customers. Matt always strives to provide the best in customer service.

Matt amazed us all with his knowledge of Porsche parts. Matt had on display dozens of different brake calipers, pointing out what makes one year or model different from another. His shelves are stocked with thousands of parts. Whatever part you’re looking for, from a lug nut to a complete engine, Matt and his crew can certainly help.

Matt, his son and employees take the time to clean, Transmission gears glass bead, repair and catalog all their inventory. Retro Automotive also sends out brake calipers, starters and alternators to be “remanufactured” to the highest standards. Everything is put back in stock either like new or better, to be offered to there ever growing worldwide customer base. Retro Automotive also has over 18,000 transactions with eBay with a 100% positive feedback.

Retro Automotive Products warehouse is located at 91 Main Street, Claremont, NH. Their web site is: www. retroautomotiveproducts.com
