6 July2017 announced that I was trying to secure a date with the American Muscle Car Museum here in Melbourne, FL for a charity event in 2018. Good news I was able to secure the date and now to put a plan into motion as all the districts will be invited to this event. So be watching for emails in The Checker and your email inbox please. There has been a lot of talk about the track time Club Racers have been receiving so I passed around the handout we were given at the BoG meeting that summarizes the track time for the past few years. Then it was time to revisit the May Showcase as it was featured in the Checker and in SportsCar magazine – terrific. Now to plan for 2018. Let's help bring this banquet happening in Gainesville please book your program to life. Please reach out to Nathan Harris at room, hit up your friends for silent auction items and they need t-shirts for the quilt! Then it was my turn to reach out to people to write articles for The Checker. I mean the stories we tell around the table after an event are awesome, why not capture it in here and share! The end of the meeting question, “Who wants to see some cool cars?” and out to the parking lot we headed. Thank you to everyone who came out and to Rick and Bob for sharing their cars with us. And yeah, my new Civic Type R was there to say hi as well. Until next month … see ya! save the date invite!

Only at the last minute did FIA give Ulmann permission to hold the 1972 race based on his assurances that a new venue was in the works and would be ready for the 1973 World Sportscar Championship (WSC) season. Despite those assurances nothing ever materialized and Ulmann walked away from Sebring in 1972 and FIA pulled its recognition of the event from its WSC calendar for 1973. In the eyes of the press the 1972 race was the last fully international event at the track and “The Last Sebring.” IMSA’s Camel GT series drew a lot of Corvettes to Sebring in 1973. hard times and at the close of the 1972 event the Fédération Internationale de l’Automobile (FIA) pulled its certification of Sebring as an international automotive race. From the late 1960s to the early 1970s FIA constantly pressured Sebring founder, Alec Ulmann, to make what the FIA deemed to be necessary safety improvements to the track and needed creature comfort improvements to the spectator areas. Anyone who had attended races in those years would heartily agree that the “old lady” was showing her age. A charitable description of the track infrastructure back then as “race track primitive” would not be out of the question. Ulmann’s response each year to the pressure from FIA was to announce to all who would listen that “… this is the last Sebring.” Well, push came to shove in 1972 after repeated promises from Ulmann that he would comply with the FIA edicts.
