W. Gordon Campbell Reading Revelation: A Thematic Approach Gordon Campbell presents a fresh approach to the Book of Revelation by moving away from recent scholarship to consider the text as the best interpreter of itself. Offering a unique thematic reading, accompanied by a detailed and valuable thematic index Campbell identifi es several key themes around which both the present book and the Book of Revelation are structured. Campbell elevates Revelation as the ‘crowning achievement’ of the Scriptures, demonstrating the ways in which the Book encourages the reader to reject the pull of propaganda that devalues the Spoken Word of God.

The Author: W. Gordon Campbell is Professor of New Testament Studies at Union Theological College, Belfast.

Biblical Studies, 234x156 mm, 432pp, PB, 9780227173831, £30.00/$60.00 C. S. Song In the Beginning Were Stories, Not Texts According to Song, the Christian faith is deeply rooted in storytelling: stories are the most basic mode of human communication and, in the same idea, the Christian Bible is fundamentally a story. Song regrets the failure of Christians and above all theologians to express their faith in term of stories. Theology is usually expressed in terms of concepts, ideas, and systems. He speak of faith and theology through stories rather than systems and texts. The Author: Choan-Chen Song is Professor of Theology and Asian Studies at Pacifi c School of Religion. Cephas T. A. Tushima The Fate of Saul’s Progeny in the Reign of David A narrative critical study offering a comprehensive analysis of the relationship between David and Saul’s heirs. Tushima explores whether Saulides’ tragedies were due to continuing divine retribution, chance, or David’s orchestration. Tushima presents the other side of King David, who is generally depicted as hero. He shows that David was often unjust in his dealings with the vanquished house of Saule. Thematic threads arising from this study are considered within their contexts in Israel’s traditions for their biblical-theological and redemptive-historical import. The Author: Cephas Tushima teaches at Jos ECWA Theological Seminary. The reader is offered a fresh way of reading and listening to the letters of Paul for a deeper understanding of their original purpose and message. The Author: Dr Heil is Professor of New Testament at the Catholic University of America. Biblical Studies, 229x153 mm, 216pp, PB, 9780227680070, £17.50/$35.00,

Jordan M. Scheetz The Concept of Canonical Intertextuality and the Book of Daniel Scheetz combines intertextuality, canon criticism, inner-biblical exegesis, intratextuality and kanonische intertextuelle Lektüre with an inductive study of the Masoretic Text of Daniel, of its connections with other texts of the Hebrew Bible, and of clear passages in the Greek text of the New Testament. He uses the Masoretic Text of Daniel as a testing ground through its multilingual character, its diverging placement in various biblical canons, and its concrete citations in some texts of the New Testament. The end result is a theory of canonical intertextuality unique in its defi nition in relation to the theories investigated, as well as its application to biblical texts. The Author: Dr Scheetz is Assistant Professor of Old Testament Languages and Literature at Tyndale Seminary, Amsterdam. Biblical Studies, 229x153 mm, 184pp, PB, 9780227680209, £15.00/$30.00

Mitzi J. Smith The Literary Construction of the Other in the Acts of the Apostles: Charismatics, the Jews, and Women The author explains how, as in the real world, the characterization of the Others is used negatively in the biblical texts. Smith shows how the concept of difference is constructed in order to distinguish ourselves from proximate others: indeed, the other who is most similar to us is most threatening and most problematic. The process of Othering, or Otherness, is a synthetic and political social construct that allows us to create and maintain boundaries between “them” and “us”. Thus, this work demonstrates how proximate characters are constructed as the Other in the Acts of the Apostles. The Author: Dr Smith is Associate Professor of New Testament and Early Christian Studies at Ashland Theological Seminary. Philip Francis Esler Sex, Wives, and Warriors Reading Old Testament Narrative with its Ancient Audience Suggesting new ways to read Old Testament narrative and giving reasons why we should, Esler, with the aid of Mediterranean anthropology, sets out an approach that helps us interpret a selection of narratives with a cultural understanding close to that of an ancient Israelite. Interpreted thus, these narratives allow us to refresh the memory that links us with pivotal stories in Jewish and Christian identities and how they foster our capacity for intercultural understanding. The Author: Philip Esler is Principal and Professor of Biblical Interpretation at St Mary’s University College, Twickenham. Biblical Studies, 229x153 mm, 420pp, PB, 9780227679913, £27.50/$55.00,

Seth D. Postell Adam as Israel: Genesis 1-3 as the Introduction to the Torah and Tanakh Postell contends that the opening chapters of the Bible, when interpreted as a strategic literary introduction to the Torah and to the Tanakh, intentionally foreshadows Israel’s failure to keep the Sinai Covenant and their consequent exile from the Promised Land, in order to point the reader to a future work of God. Postell highlights numerous intentional links between the story of Adam and the story of Israel and, in the process, explains numerous otherwise perplexing features of the Eden story. The Author: Seth Postell is Lecturer in Biblical Studies at Israel College of the Bible. It explains how Luke integrates John’s apparent ignorance of Jesus as well as Jesus’ indictment of the religious leaders into his literary scheme. Finally, Martinez shows how Luke puts this tradition about John and Jesus at the service of his Theocentric and Christological perspectives and offers an alternative explanation to the prevailing interpretation of John’s question. The Author: Roberto Martinez is Adjunct Professor of New Testamant at CEDOC, Puerto Rica. Biblical Studies, 229x153 mm, 246pp, PB, 9780227680117, £20.00/$40.00

Thomas W. Mann The Book of the Former Prophets The Former Prophets of the Hebrew Bible provide a narrative of ancient Israel’s history of some 700 years from the “conquest” of Canaan to the exile. Mann adopts a critical perspective and incorporates many distinct sources from different times into his work. The result is a compelling example of ancient historiography In a deeply thoughtful and constructive way, The Former Prophets addresses perennial questions such as, amongst others, “What is the relationship between divine sovereignty and human political institutions?” The Author: Thomas W. James Paton Jr. (Editor) Irenaeus on the Christian Faith A Condensation of Against Heresies Irenaeus’ massive Against Heresies offers a winsome and compelling presentation of the Christian faith, but few have read this magnum opus. James Payton has condensed Against Heresies by cutting out most of the interaction with the Gnostics, allowing Irenaeus’ rich presentation on the Christian faith to shine through. Furthermore, the author has refurbished the English prose to make it accessible to contemporary readers. With this distillation readers now have access to Irenaeus’ rich presentation of the Christian faith, saturated in a thorough knowledge of Scripture and steadfastly rooted in the apostolic tradition of the early church. Rosalene Bradbury Cross Theology The Classical Theologia Crucis and Karl Barth’s Modern Theology of the Cross An astute and thought-provoking analysis of the theologia crucis and the signifi cance of Karl Barth as a modern exponent of this theological tradition. In this volume New Zealand theologian Rosalene Bradbury argues convincingly that tethered to the tradition that gave rise to it, the term theologia crucis references a theological system centered around notions of false and true glory, and an ancient conviction that from the cross of Jesus Christ comes a revelatory and a saving Word. The Author: Rosalene Bradbury took her Ph.D. in Systematic Theology at the University of Auckland. Systematic Theology, 229x153 mm, 338pp, PB, 9780227680308, £22.50/$45.00,

James P. Danaher Jesus after Modernity A Twenty-First-Century Critique of Our Modern Concept of Truth and the Truth of the Gospel During the 17th and 18th centuries, modern thinkers came to believe that our notion of truth should be objective, certain, and precise. Mathematics became the model for how truth should be conceptualized, and we sought to eliminate ideas that were vague, ambiguous, or contradictory. The teachings of Jesus, however, are often vague, ambiguous, and even contradictory. Fortunately, a twenty-fi rst century understanding of the human condition has debunked the modern notion of truth, showing it to be truncated at best. This volume sets out to explore these issues in depth and examine what it might mean for us to speak of the truth of the Gospel in a twenty-fi rst century context. The Author: James Danaher is Head of the Philosophy Department at Nyack College. Systematic Theology, 229x153 mm, 158pp, PB, 9780227680018, £15.00/$30.00, Eric G. Flett Persons, Powers, and Pluralities Toward a Trinitarian Theology of Culture Through an intimate conversation with the writings of Thomas F. Torrance, Flett articulates a Trinitarian theology of culture, suggesting that Christian assumptions in the areas of God, creation, and humanity were a major infl uence on the development of Western scientifi c culture. Flett develops these areas of Torrance’s thought to articulate a theology of culture rooted in Christian understanding of God as triune, creation as contingent, and human persons as stewards in the image of God. The Author: Eric Flett is Professor of Theology and Culture at Eastern University, Pennsylvania. Systematic Theology, 229x153 mm, 266pp, PB, 9780227680025, £19.50/$39.00

Vladimir Kharlamov Theosis II Deifi cation in Christian Theology Deifi cation is the transformation of believers into the likeness of God. While Christian monotheism does not support the notion of any literal ‘god making’ of believers, the New Testament often speaks of a transformation of mind, a metamorphosis of character, a redefi nition of selfhood, and an imitation of God. This second volume of biblical and historical-theological essays offer a variety of innovative approaches to the issue of theosis – the name by which this process of transformation has become known. The interconnections between the theology of deifi cation and the doctrines of the Trinity, Christology, anthropology, protology, hamartiology, soteriology, and eschatology are made manifest in these fascinating new studies. The Editor: Vladimir Kharlamov has taught at Farleigh Dickinson University, and is joint editor of Theosis I. Barth’s thought, as evidenced amongst his most expert commentators, allows for a variety of interpretations, the details of which are being hammered out on the pages of academic journals and volumes such as this one. It is this variety of responses to and interpretations of Barth’s theology that gives such vibrancy to the essays in this volume by seasoned Barth scholars and voices new to the conversation. Gale Heide Timeless Truth in the Hands of History A Short History of System in Theology This study attempts to address the historical debate over when systematic theology began. Much of the debate is centered on the defi nition of system and revolves around the use, or lack thereof, of external philosophical categories or language. Heide argues that both external points of reference and programmatic intentions have played a role in theology since the church’s inception. In other words, certain elements of system (e.g., logic, non-contradiction, organization) have played a role in theological investigation and construction since, at least, the second century. Each argues that God sustains the universe at every moment of its existence, but they work out their detailed understandings of divine sustenance in very different ways. By comparing their description of God’s continual preservation of the universe, this book asks original, unfamiliar questions of each. This method demonstrates the incisive power of comparative theology to generate critical tension and its creative power to resolve it. This volume examines Bonhoeffer’s rich resources for thinking about what it means to be human, to be the church, to be a disciple, and to be ethically responsible in our contemporary world. Doreen M. Rosman Evangelicals and Culture Nineteenth-century evangelicals often dismissed as anti-intellectual and philistine. Drawing from periodicals, memoirs and letters, Evangelicals and Culture aims to demonstrate that this vision doesn’t depict the reality of British evangelicals between 1790 and 1833. By examining evangelicals’ leisure pursuits along with their enjoyment of art, music, literature and study, Rosman concludes that they shared the thought and taste of their contemporaries to a far greater extent than is usually acknowledged. Rosman reaches the conclusion that actually, evangelical theology encouraged such activities and that evangelicals regarded recreations which engaged the mind or which could be pursued within the safety of the home as more concordant with spirituality than “sensual” or “worldly” pleasures. The Author: Doreen Rosman taught at the University of Kent at Canterbury. Paul Holmer Edited by David J. Gouwens & Lee C. Barrett On Kierkegaard and the Truth Paul L. Holmer (1916-2004) was one of the most signifi cant American students of Kierkegaard of his generation. Although written in the 1950s and 1960s, Holmer’s theological and philosophical engagement with Kierkegaard challenges contemporary scholarly discussion. Holmer rejects popular existentialist readings of Kierkegaard, seeing him as an analyzer of concepts, while at the same time denying that he is a “crypto-analyst.” In his important reading of Kierkegaard on “truth”, Holmer pits Kierkegaard against those who see “truth” empirically, idealistically, or relativistically. His carefully textured account of Kierkegaard’s conceptual grammar of “truth” in ethical and religious contexts addresses immediately current discussions of truth, meaning, reference, and realism versus antirealism, relativism, and hermeneutics. It will be of great interest to all interested in Kierkegaard and his importance for contemporary theology and philosophy. The Editors: David J. Gouwens is Professor of Theology at Brite Divinity School. Lee C. Barrett III is Stager Professor of Theology at Lancaster Theological Seminary. Athanasopoulos & C. Schneider (Editors) Divine Essence and Divine Energies Ecumenical Refl ections on the Presence of God in Eastern Orthodoxy For many contemporary Orthodox theologians the distinction between divine energy and divine essence belongs to the very core of the Orthodox tradition and has no equivalent in the West. This position has been restated and developed by Prof David Bradshaw in his crucial publication Aristotle East and West: Metaphysics and the Division of Christendom (Cambridge: CUP, 2004). Yet the views expressed in Bradshaw’s book have not remained uncontested. The present volume takes Bradshaw’s work as the starting point for an ecumenical debate about this doctrine. Leading Anglican, Calvinist and Roman Catholic, as well as Orthodox, theologians are given the opportunity to critically assess the nature and signifi cance of this doctrine from a historical, theological and philosophical perspective. This collection of essays originated from a colloquium organised by the Institute for Orthodox Christian Stud- ies (Cambridge, UK). However, the number of papers and the scope of the questions discussed in Divine Essence and Divine Energies by far exceed the original conference programme.

Joseph Kim Reformed Epistemology and the Problem of Religious Diversity Proper Function, Epistemic Disagreement, and Christian Exclusivism In contemporary philosophy of religion, there has been heated debate about whether the diversity of mutually exclusive religious beliefs is a good reason to give up any form of religious exclusivism. Christian exclusivists defend the truth of Christian beliefs while the opponents of Christian belief base their criticism upon religious diversity and disagreement. Kim defends Christian belief and Alvin Plantinga’s version of Reformed Epistemology. The Author: Joseph Kim is Executive Vice-President of Christ Bible Institute Japan in Nagoya. Paul Duane Matheny Contextual Theology: The Drama of Our Times The global understanding of the Church has been shaped by Western theological imperatives. Yet today, the decline of institutional religion in the West, and the extraordinary growth of the Church of the global South means that a radical movement beyond such theologies is required. Matheny argues that the Church should become more contextualized and less Western. Contextual Theology addresses that issue and examines how a reassessment of the relationship of the Gospel to cultural context can advance this critical and necessary development. Matheny considers the historical background to contextual theology.
