He have been very happy with broke his maiden over seven his condition since he won furlongs towards the tail end the Autumn S. two weeks of 2012, before making the ago,@ he said. AThe trip and rest of his nine starts in ground should be fine and, graded-stakes company, six although this is another of those Grade Is. An Kingston Hill step up, I am confident 11 1/2-length winner of the Racing Post that he will be there or GIII Lecomte S. His last two, Camelot Star S. Feb. 23 and was run down by his stablemate (GB) (Montjeu {Ire}) and Kingsbarns (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}), and subsequent GI Travers S. hero Will Take Charge had a similar profile to the stable=s supplemented (Unbridled=s Song) in the GII Rebel S. After proving Century (Ire) (Montjeu {Ire}), who scored on debut at 1 3/4 lengths too good for his rivals in the Preakness The Curragh Oct. 13. Impressive on that occasion, he is (video), Oxbow rounded out his Triple Crown campaign joined by the maiden Johann Strauss (GB) (High with a solid runner-up effort to Palace Malice (Curlin) in Chaparral {Ire}) and wide-margin Tipperary scorer the GI Belmont S. after attending the fastest early pace Buonarroti (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}). In a strong renewal, since Secretariat=s historic victory in 1973. Cont. p12 Godolphin run the similarly supplemented Pinzolo (GB) (Monsun {Ger}), who is two-for-two after taking part in the Aug. 16 Newmarket maiden won by Motivator (GB) and Frankel (GB) and Newbury=s Haynes, Hanson & Clark Conditions S. Sept. 20. APinzolo has physically come on from his win at Newbury and he=s a middle- distance prospect for next season, so stamina will not be a concern,@ trainer Charlie Appleby commented. AHe is one of our better 2-year-old colts and I am hopeful of a good run.@ Toormore=s trainer Richard Hannon supplies Middleham Park Racing=s unbeaten Chief Barker (Ire) (Azamour {Ire}), who beat the subsequent G1 Fillies= Mile winner Chriselliam (Ire) (Iffraaj {GB}) in the Listed Ascendant S. over a mile at Haydock last time Sept. 7. ADoncaster have had more than 12 millimeters of rain this week, so inevitably the ground will be slow, so we have decided to run Chief Barker and not Toormore, who will now be put away until next year, when he will have a Guineas preparation,@ Hannon explained. AToormore is all class but his speed would be blunted by soft ground, whereas Chief Barker, a good horse in his own right, is more the grinder, so arguably better suited to the testing conditions.@ Field p6 In This Issue Weisbord Receives Galbreath Award 60 Broad St., Suite 100 Red Bank, NJ 07701 TDN President and co-publisher Barry (732) 747-8060 Weisbord graciously accepted the John W. Galbreath Award for Entrepreneurship by the University of Louisville=s Equine Industry Program Thursday night. The award was presented at an intimate dinner held at the University Club at Louisville that was hosted by Tim Capps, director of the Equine Industry Program. The Galbreath award, named after the renowned businessman, sportsman and philanthropist who founded Darby Dan Farm in Kentucky, is given to a person who has achieved entrepreneurial excellence, with criteria including success in business, creativity, vision, risk-taking, and the respect of peers and associates. Students from the program attended the event, and were offered Weisbord=s 10 Commandments of business, which began with, AYou shall always be as prepared as possible,@ and concluded with, AYou shall always remember your word is your bond. Do what you say you will do.@ Weisbord gave a brief overview of his career, stretching back to when he was a junior in college and, along with his friend Alan Goldberg, got a summer job walking hots for trainer Walter Kelley at Aqueduct. AAt the time, I was just a fan of Thoroughbred racing,@ said Weisbord. ASince that day, I have never left the horse industry. I have never applied for a job. I have never drafted a resume.@ Weisbord went on to train briefly--he ultimately relinquished those duties to Goldberg--before founding the bloodstock portfolio management company Executive Bloodstock in 1979. In the 1980s, he helped found Matchmaker Breeders= Exchange, which facilitated the sale of stallion seasons and shares. AI expanded Matchmaker from a yearly auction to a weekly exchange with my partner Johnny Jones III, and we filled an office with co-workers who shared our vision, loved the horse business, and worked harder than people in Lexington were used to working,@ said Weisbord, who laughed, AThey answered the phone at 6:00 at night, when those sort of hours were unheard of.@ Tim Capps presents the Galbreath Award Lucas Marquardt 859-873-7270 • www.airdriestud.com TDN P HEADLINE NEWS • 10/26/13 • PAGE 4 of 14 • thoroughbreddailynews.com Galbreath Award cont. WEST COAST Flatter – Caressing by Honour and Glory 2014 Bay l 16.2 Hands “An Eclipse Award winning champion, West Coast is by an outstanding sire son of A.P. Indy, out of a ChampionTwo-Year-Old Filly. West Coast earned a title as Champion Three-Year-Old Colt with five consecutive victories, four in stakes events, and ran 1-2-3 in six consecutive grade one events, including when capturing the Travers Stakes (G1) and Pennsylvania Derby (G1). He is by Flatter, a leading stallion son of A.P. The cross with mares from the Danzig branch of Northern Dancer has been particulary productive with seven stakes winners, including graded stakes winners Classic Point and Mad Flatter out of mares by Langfuhr and Honor Grades (who gives inbreeding to the dam of A.P. Indy), and there are also stakes winners out of mares by War Front – who appears particularly interesting here, giving inbreeding to Relaunch and a full-sister – Danzig Connection, Ghazi and Military (who would be intriguing here).

  • Bulletin Book Extracts
Bulletin Book Extracts Continuity with the Dark Horses Annual … In my Dark Horses Guide I made out a case for Nichols Canyon, now the winner of seven of his 10 starts over hurdles. A genuine and classy performer for John Gosden on the Flat, with two Listed victories and a Group 3 placing to his name, he landed four Grade 1 races as a novice last season without getting the credit he deserved. This season he became the first horse to beat Faugheen, where the close proximity of Wicklow Brave in third suggests the favourite underperformed, before winning his sixth Grade 1 race when beating Identity Thief in the Ryanair Hurdle at Leopardstown over Christmas. Nichols Canyon ran the worst race of his career just under a month later when he trailed home 28 lengths third to Faugheen and Arctic Fire in the Irish Champion Hurdle, possibly feeling the effects of his tussle with Identity Thief in the heavy ground. Nichols Canyon’s greatest asset is his tenacity. He is not the sort of horse ever to win on the bridle, but he handles any ground and has strong winning form over two and a half miles – always an asset in the Champion Hurdle. Willie Mullins says the horse reminds him of Hurricane Fly – a great compliment - and there is a case for saying he has the best overall form in the race, even though the ratings suggest otherwise. Strong Opinions … I have no doubt that My Tent Or Yours is one of the most talented horses Nicky Henderson has ever trained.

(from Hart Crane’s Voyages, II) For Mom and Dad ii Acknowledgments I fear that what follows this preface will appear quite like one of the disorderly monsters it investigates. But should you find anything in this work compelling on account of its being lucid, know that I am not responsible. Not long ago, you see, I was brought up on charges of obscurantisme, although the only “terroristic” aspects of it were self- directed—“Vous avez mal compris; vous êtes idiot.”1 But I’ve been rehabilitated, or perhaps, like Aphrodite in Iliad 5 (if you buy my reading), habilitated for the first time, to the joys of clearer prose. My committee is responsible for this, especially my chair Richard Janko and he who first intervened, Benjamin Fortson. I thank them. If something in here should appear refined, again this is likely owing to the good taste of my committee. And if something should appear peculiarly sensitive, empathic even, then it was the humanity of my committee that enabled, or at least amplified, this, too.
