And also with you. Let us pray. Almighty God, on this day you opened the way of eternal life to every race and nation by the promised gift of your Holy Spirit: Shed abroad this gift throughout the world by the preaching of the Gospel, that it may reach to the ends of the earth; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen. First Reading Be seated. Acts 2:1-6, 14-17, 21 When the day of Pentecost had come, they were all together in one place. And suddenly from heaven there came a sound like the rush of a violent wind, and it filled the entire house where they were sitting. Divided tongues, as of fire, appeared among them, and a tongue rested on each of them. All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other languages, as the Spirit gave them ability. Now there were devout Jews from every nation under heaven living in Jerusalem. And at this sound the crowd gathered and was bewildered, because each one heard them speaking in the native language of each. But Peter, standing with the eleven, raised his voice and addressed them, “Men of Judea and all who live in Jerusalem, let this be known to you, and listen to what I say. Indeed, these are not drunk, as you suppose, for it is only nine o’clock in the morning. No, this is what was spoken through the prophet Joel: ‘In the last days it will be, God declares, that I will pour out my Spirit upon all flesh, and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, and your young men shall see visions, and your old men shall dream dreams. Then everyone who calls on the name of the Lord shall be saved.’ The Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. 2 J Day of Pentecost • May 20, 2018, 6 pm Psalm 104:25-31, 37 Remain seated. Sung by the choir to an Anglican chant by John Camidge II (1790-1859). O LORD, how manifold are your works! * in wisdom you have made them all; the earth is full of your creatures. Yonder is the great and wide sea with its living things too many to number, * creatures both small and great. There move the ships, and there is that Leviathan, * which you have made for the sport of it. All of them look to you * to give them their food in due season. You give it to them; they gather it; * you open your hand, and they are filled with good things. You hide your face, and they are terrified; * you take away their breath, and they die and return to their dust. You send forth your Spirit, and they are created; * and so you renew the face of the earth. Bless the Lord, O my soul. Hallelujah! Alleluia All sing refrain as indicated. Al -- le lu -ia. Al- le- lu -ia. Al -- le lu -ia. Choir Verse: Come, Holy Spirit, and fill the hearts of your faithful people, and kindle in them the fire of your love. Remain standing. Gospel of Christ John 14: 23, 25-27 The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to John. Glory to you, Lord Christ. Jesus said, “Those who love me will keep my word, and my Father will love them, and we will come to them and make our home with them. I have said these things to you while I am still with you. But the Advocate, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you everything, and remind you of all that I have said to you. Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled, and do not let them be afraid.” The Gospel of the Lord. Praise to you, Lord Christ. Sermon The Rev. Patrick C. Making & Renewing Baptismal Vows Let us join with those who are committing themselves to Christ and renew our own baptismal covenant. Do you believe in God the Father? I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth. Do you believe in Jesus Christ, the Son of God? I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord. He was conceived by the power of the Holy Spirit and born of the Virgin Mary. He suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried. He descended to the dead. On the third day he rose again. He ascended into heaven, and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again to judge the living and the dead. Do you believe in God the Holy Spirit? I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Will you continue in the apostles’ teaching and fellowship, in the breaking of bread, and in the prayers? I will, with God’s help. Will you persevere in resisting evil, and, whenever you fall into sin, repent and return to the Lord? I will, with God’s help. Will you proclaim by word and example the Good News of God in Christ? I will, with God’s help. Will you seek and serve Christ in all persons, loving your neighbor as yourself? I will, with God’s help. Will you strive for justice and peace among all people, and respect the dignity of every human being? I will, with God’s help. Prayers for the Candidates Please stand or kneel. The leader offers prayers for the candidates and the People. The people respond to each intercession with ‘Lord, hear our prayer.’ The Presider adds a concluding prayer, to which the People respond, “Amen.” Gathering Hymn 509 Spirit divine, attend our prayers (Nun danket all und bringet Ehr) 4 J Day of Pentecost • May 20, 2018, 6 pm The Candidates and their families come forward. Thanksgiving over the Water Remain standing. Book of Common Prayer, p. 306 The Lord be with you. And also with you. Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. It is right to give God thanks and praise. We thank you, Almighty God, for the gift of water. Over it the Holy Spirit moved in the beginning of creation. Through it you led the children of Israel out of their bondage in Egypt into the land of promise. In it your Son Jesus received the baptism of John and was anointed by the Holy Spirit as the Messiah, the Christ, to lead us, through his death and resurrection, from the bondage of sin into everlasting life. We thank you, Father, for the water of Baptism. In it we are buried with Christ in his death. By it we share in his resurrection. Through it we are reborn by the Holy Spirit. Therefore in joyful obedience to your Son, we bring into his fellowship those who come to him in faith, baptizing them in the Name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Now sanctify this water, we pray you, by the power of your Holy Spirit, that those who here are cleansed from sin and born again may continue for ever in the risen life of Jesus Christ our Savior. To him, to you, and to the Holy Spirit, be all honor and glory, now and for ever. Amen. The Baptism Be seated. The Candidates are presented by name to the Minister, who pours water upon them, saying: N., I baptize you in the Name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit.
