FBS “The Ministry of Jesus the Messiah” 3-13-16 Joel Breidenbaugh (Luke 3-21) Intro. Today we begin a 4-part series entitled “Jesus the Messiah” from the Gospel of Luke. It will take us just past Easter as our main focus will be the crucifixion & resurrection of Jesus the Messiah (hence, the cross & tomb up here on stage). To help set that context, I want to do an overview of Luke 3-21 on “The Ministry of Jesus the Messiah.” When you think about ministry, it is quite common to think of ministers. I heard about how a group of ministers and a salesman’s organization were holding conventions in the same hotel, and the catering department had to work at top speed serving dinners to both. The salesmen were having spiked watermelon for dessert. But the chef discovered that it was being served to the ministers by mistake. “Quick!” he commanded a waiter. “Bring it back!” The waiter returned, reporting that it was too late. The ministers were already eating the liquor-spiced treat. “Do they like it?” asked the chef. “Don’t know,” replied the waiter, “but they’re putting the seeds in their pockets” (Quoted Magazine). Ministry can be wearisome enough that one might turn to such things to dull the pain, but the high mark of ministry is in following in our Lord’s footsteps. Let’s read a few select passages to set the stage for “The Ministry of Jesus the Messiah.” Theme: Christ’s ministry Background: You know the first couple of chapters of Luke better than these chapters we’re looking at today—news about the births of John the Baptist & Jesus, Jesus’ presentation in the temple & teaching to astound the religious leaders at the age of twelve. -

November 5, 2017 End Time Chronology from Jesus in the Olivet Discourse (Matthew 24, Mark 13, Luke 21) Shawn Nelson (1) How does Matthew 24 fit into our on-going study? The view we’ve been teaching (Premillennialism) says there will be a literal world leader (antichrist) who is able to establish peace treaty in the Middle East between Israel and her neighbors for 7 years (Dan. 9:24-27). In the middle of the 7 years he walks into the temple in Jerusalem, takes away the sacrifices (Dan. 12:11), and declares himself to be God (Dan. 9:27; 11:31; Matt. 24:15; Mark 13:14; 2 Thess. 2:3-4). He forces everybody to worship him (2 Thess. 2:4; Rev. 13:15) and requires them to have a mark in order to buy or sell anything anywhere in the world (Rev. 13:16). Matthew 24 helps us see that Jesus’ taught the above scenario too. Jesus mentions all of the following: the existence of the nation of Israel, the temple in Jerusalem, the antichrist, tribulation, the second coming (and possibly rapture). The Temple to Be Destroyed 24 Then Jesus went out and departed from the temple, and His disciples came up to show Him the buildings of the temple. 2 And Jesus said to them, “Do you not see all these things? [the Jerusalem temple] Assuredly, I say to you, not one stone shall be left here upon another, that shall not be thrown down.” The Disciples’ Two Questions 3 Now as He sat on the Mount of Olives, the disciples came to Him privately, saying, “Tell us, when will these things be? History and Eschatology in the Book of Daniel William H. Shea Biblical Research Institute Daniel is something of a bipolar book. Its first six chapters cluster around the history of the Neo-Babylonian empire and the early Persian rule in Babylon. The last six chapters of the book give an apocalyptic outline that ends with the great eschatological climax. Thus it is appropriate to examine both subjects in a survey of Daniel. That makes our approach here threefold. First, history on its own terms, then the link between history and eschatology, and finally, eschatol- ogy on its own terms. Historical Survey I begin this study with a brief review of the present status of the historical chapters with regard to their historicity when evaluated by extra-biblical docu- ments. The Conquest of Jerusalem and the Third Year of Jehoiakim. The two major historical problems in Daniel l were resolved with the publication of the first 13 years of Nebuchadnezzar's Chronicles by D. J. Wiseman in l956. The last half of the entry for the year 605 states, "at that time Nebuchadnezzar con- quered the whole of Hatti-country". The designation Hatti or Hittite country includes all of Syria and Palestine. -

Jesus answered, Take heed that no man deceives you. For many will come in My name, saying, I am Christ, and will deceive many (1st Seal = White Horse of Rev 6:1-2). And you will hear of wars and rumors of wars. See that you are not troubled, for all these things must occur; but the end is not yet. For nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom (2nd Seal = Red Horse of Rev 6:3-4). And there will be famines and pestilences and earthquakes in different places (3rd Seal = Black Horse of Rev 6:5-6). All these are the beginning of sorrows. Then they will deliver you up to be afflicted and will kill you. And you will be hated of all nations for My name's sake. And then many will be offended, and will betray one another, and will hate one another (4th Seal = Pale Horse of Rev 6:7-8). And many false prophets will rise and deceive many. And because iniquity shall abound, the love of many will become cold. But he who endures to the end, the same shall be kept safe. And this Gospel of the Kingdom shall be proclaimed in all the world as a witness to all nations. And then the end shall come. -
Wisdom in Daniel and the Origin of Apocalyptic
WISDOM IN DANIEL AND THE ORIGIN OF APOCALYPTIC by GERALD H. WILSON University of Georgia, Athens, Georgia 30602 In this paper, I am concerned with the relationship of the book of Daniel and the biblical wisdom literature. The study draws its impetus from the belief of von Rad that apocalyptic is the "child" of wisdom (1965, II, pp. 304-15). My intent is to test von Rad's claim by a study of wisdom terminology in Daniel in order to determine whether, in fact, that book has its roots in the wisdom tradition. Adequate evidence has been gathered to demonstrate a robust connection between the nar ratives of Daniel 1-6 and mantic wisdom which employs the interpreta tion of dreams, signs and visions (Millier, 1972; Collins, 1975). Here I am concerned to dispell the continuing notion that apocalyptic as ex hibited in Daniel (especially in chapters 7-12) is the product of the same wisdom circles from which came the proverbial biblical books of Proverbs, Ecclesiastes, Job and the later Ben Sirach. 1 I am indebted to the work of Why bray ( 1974), who has dealt exhaustively with the terminology of biblical wisdom, and to the work of Crenshaw (1969), who, among others, has rightly cautioned that the presence of wisdom vocabulary is insufficient evidence of sapiential influence. 2 Whybray (1974, pp. 71-154) distinguishes four categories of wisdom terminology: a) words from the root J:ikm itself; b) other characteristic terms occurring only in the wisdom corpus (5 words); c) words char acteristic of wisdom, but occurring so frequently in other contexts as to render their usefulness in determining sapiential influence questionable (23 words); and d) words characteristic of wisdom, but occurring only occasionally in other OT traditions (10 words). -

For more information, please contact [email protected] Abstract: (Daniel, apocalypticism, William Miller) This thesis is a comparison of how three different apocalyptic religious groups interpret the Book of Daniel as referring to their particular group and circumstances despite the vast differences from the book’s original context. First, the authorship of the book of Daniel itself is analyzed to establish the original intent of the book and what it meant to its target audience in the second century BCE. This first chapter is also used as a point of comparison to the other groups. Secondly, the influence of Daniel on the authorship of the book of Revelation and early Christianity is examined. In the third chapter, the use of Daniel amongst the Millerites, a nineteenth century American apocalyptic religious movement is analyzed. To conclude, the use of Daniel amongst the three groups is compared allowing for conclusions of how these particular groups managed to understand the book of Daniel as referring to their own particular group and circumstances with some attention paid to modern trends in interpretation as well. In effect, non-Muslims and Muslim scholars neglect the full range of Prophet Muhammad’s statements about Jesus that are in the Hadīth. The dissertation’s main thesis is that an examination of the Hadīths’ reports of Muhammad’s words about and attitudes toward ‘Īsā will lead to fuller understandings about Jesus-‘Īsā among Muslims and propose to non-Muslims new insights into Christian tradition about Jesus. In the latter process, non-Muslims will be encouraged to re-examine past hostile views concerning Muhammad and his words about Jesus. A minor thesis is that Western readers in particular, whether or not they are Christians, will be aided to understand Islamic beliefs about ‘Īsā, prophethood, and eschatology more fully. In the course of the dissertation, Hadīth studies will be enhanced by a full presentation of Muhammad’s words about and attitudes toward Jesus-‘Īsā. -

He has published widely on pluralism and race relations in Britain and on Islam’s and Christianity’s differing responses to modern secularism. His books include The Light in the Enlightenment (1990) and Be Careful with Muhammad! (1989), a classic critique of Salman Rushdie, as well as The Quran and the Secular Mind (2007) and Islam as Political Religion (2010). He has also published three volumes of poetry in English. Beale's latest commentary on Revelation and Kim Riddlebarger's new book A Casefor Ami~~ennialismhave renewed interest in the debate on the nature of the millennium.' Amillennialism has an illustrious history of support from Augustine, theologians of the Calvinistic and ~utheran confessions, and a long line of Reformed theologians such as Abraham Kuyper, Amin Vos, H. Ridderbos, A. A. Hoekema, and M. G. line? Amillennialists recognize that a straightforward reading of the text seems to show "the chronologicalp'ogression of Rev 19-20, the futurity of Satan's imprisonment,the physicality of 'the first resurrection' and the literalness of the one thousand years" (emphasis supplied).) However, they do not accept a chronologicalprogression of the events in these chapters, preferring instead to understand the events as recapitulatory. Their rejection of the natural reading of the text is driven by a hermeneutic of strong inaugurated eschatology4-the paradox that in the Apocalypse divine victory over the dragon and the reign of Christ and his church over this present evil world consist in participating with Christ in his sufferings and death? Inaugurated eschatology emphasizes Jesus' victory over the powers of evil at the cross. Since that monumental event, described so dramatically in Rev 12, Satan has been bound and the saints have been reigning (Rev 20). From the strong connection between the two chapters (see Table 1 below) they infer that Rev 20 recapitulates Rev 12.
