    A Working Chronology of Oregon Literature – 1838 -1950 By Tim Barnes with additions by Rick Rubin & David Milholland 1838 (March) First Oregon poem, written by Mrs. Jason Lee, a farewell to her husband Jason Lee. 1843 Prairie Flower, by Sidney Walter Moss, was probably the first novel written in Oregon. An Oregon City merchant, Moss sent it east with a friend. It was published by Stratton & Barnard in Cincinnati under the name of a well-known author of the time, Emerson Bennett. 1846 -1855 Oregon Spectator, Oregon’s first newspaper, printed some of the earliest poetry written in Oregon, frequently unsigned. 1852 A Melodrame Entitled “Treason, Stratagems, and Spoils,” by Breakspear (Charles Lysander Adams). This political satire appeared in five installments in The Oregonian and later as a pamphlet. Adams may have been the most popular writer in Oregon in this era. (April 23) Edwin Markham born in Oregon City. The author of “The Man with the Hoe” (1899), the most famous poem of the Progressive Era, left Oregon at the age of five. 1854 Grains, or Passages in the Life of Ruth Rover, with Occasional Pictures of Oregon, Natural and Moral, by Mrs. Margaret Jewett Bailey. The first novel published in Oregon, a thinly disguised autobiography detailing Bailey’s difficulties as a woman missionary in Oregon. 1862 The Canoe and the Saddle, Adventures Among the Northwestern Rivers and Forests, by Theodore 1 Winthrop, a stirring account of a voyage from Port Townsend to The Dalles in 1853, published around the time of the author’s death early in the Civil War.

Since then the story has been refilmed twice, once by Gor­ don Douglas in 1966 with Bing Crosby and Ann Margaret, and again in 1988 for television with Kris Kristofferson and Johnny Cash. In a straightforward, no-nonsense manner Richard Etulain summarizes the plots of Hay­ cox's novels and major stories and charts his artistic achievement from pulp story to pano­ ramic historical novel.

    Alexander H. Poole. “As Popular as Pin-Up Girls:” The Armed Services Editions and American Print Culture, 1943-1947. A Master’s Paper for the M.S. in L.S degree. April, 2009. 121 pages. Advisor: Barbara B. Moran. During the Second World War, the United States government collaborated with American publishers to provide servicemen with unprecedented access to reading material. Between 1943 and 1947, the Armed Services Editions project supplied 1,322 titles and nearly 123 million books in all genres, from classics to westerns. Using both primary and secondary sources, the following essay probes the interplay between culture and society, home front and theaters of war, as viewed through the lens of the Armed Services Editions. The project provides a case study, in short, through which to analyze what historians Carl Kaestle and Janice Radway call “print culture” between 1943 and 1947. The Armed Service Editions initiative reveals not only changes in modern book publishing and in modern book reading, but also documents larger trends in modern American culture, notably the ascendance of “middlebrow” culture during the second quarter of the twentieth century. Tacconi Professor of Musicology Sue Haug Professor of Music Director of the School of Music *Signatures are on file in the Graduate School iii ABSTRACT Music in John Ford’s Westerns reveals increasingly complex and sympathetic depictions of Native Americans throughout his filmography. While other directors of the genre tend to showcase a one-dimensional “brutal savage” archetype (especially in the early sound era), Ford resisted this tendency in favor of multidimensional depictions. As a director, Ford was particularly opinionated about music and wielded ultimate control over the types of songs used in his films. The resulting artworks, visual and aural, were therefore the vision of one creator. To investigate the participation of music in Ford’s approach, I have investigated three archetypal products of the Western’s three early periods: The Iron Horse (1924), Stagecoach (1939), and The Searchers (1956). In The Iron Horse, an Indian duality is visually present with the incorporation of friendly Pawnees and destructive Cheyennes. My recent recovery of the score, however, reveals a more complicated reading due to thematic borrowing that identifies white characters as the source of Indian aggression. Stagecoach builds upon this duality by adding a third morally ambiguous Indian character, Yakima.

    The Berkhofer Duality Revealed in the Western Films of John Ford and John Wayne John T. Nelson University of Toledo 1 Robert F. Berkhofer, Jr. argues that the United States has categorized Native Americans in polarized stereotypes of noble savage or vicious heathen. He contends that scholarly interest in Indian culture has risen and subsided in tandem with its emphasis in popular culture. Since motion pictures represent a significant component of popular culture, this paper proposes to examine the representation of Native Americans in Western film. The research focuses on the major works of John Ford and John Wayne, dominant contributors to the genre in direction and acting, respectively. The investigation assesses the portrayal of aboriginal peoples as a means of studying American perceptions of their culture. These secondary sources inform the study. Berkhofer notes the legacy and depth of the Western genre for Americans.1 In Six Guns and Society, Will Wright examines its popularity stating: For the Western, like any myth, stands between individual human consciousness and society. If a myth is popular, it must somehow appeal to or reinforce the individuals who view it by communicating a symbolic meaning to them. This meaning must, in turn, reflect the particular social institutions and attitudes that have created and continue to nourish the myth. Thus, a myth must tell its viewers about themselves and their society.2 Cultural historian Russel Nye describes the popular arts as works of humanistic form reflecting the tastes and values of the public in the preface to his study.3 The monograph by Ralph Brauer researches the television format of Western imagery.4 John G.

It is space so well known by readers or viewers of the Western that it needs only “a few simple clues” or signi!ers to suggest both its real identity and its symbolic meaning. For example, following General George Custer’s movement on the Indians, 19th-century Americans knew “they saw a hero at once true to life and infused with a symbolic signi!cance only !ctive heroes possess.
