Project LEAD offers academic, social, and recreational programming year round to elementary aged school children. Project LEAD objectives are a) to provide mentoring related to academics and healthy socio- emotional development b) to improve academic performance and attitudes toward learning c) to involve parents through active participation in the LEAD parent Council in order to bridge communication between the parents, children, ad school d) to enhance cultural awareness and physical and creative development Project LEAD fulfills their objectives because of the wonderful programming and the phenomenal staff at the Better Boys Foundations. Project LEAD’s staff is comprised of a cadre of licensed teachers, teachers-in-training and/or those studying for degrees in elementary education who work directly with the children after school and in the summertime. In each of Project LEAD’s classrooms, for every twenty students there is one Certified Teacher and a Teacher’s Assistant. The current program director for Project LEAD, Ms. Pamela Blackman, has over 25 years of work experience in childcare and education and also holds several degrees in sociology, education, and childcare. Parents and/or guardians can be assured that their children are receiving service from qualified and experienced staff members. The high-spirited staff of Project LEAD performs with excellence, and they aim to ensure that each and every child can be cultivated at the Better Boys Foundation for positive development. Students in Project LEAD take have field trips, arts and crafts classes, participate in performances, sport activities, tutoring, knitting, ballet, tap dancing, computer classes, and much more. This past fall, over 60 students from Project LEAD went on a weekend trip to the Kalahari Resort in Wisconsin Dales. Project LEAD also has many special events throughout the year, especially during the holiday season. The Better Boys Foundation provides transportation for children who attend schools within North Lawndale to the agency. Project Lead also offers great summer programming, so as the end of the school year quickly approaches be sure to check us out. Project LEAD operates between the hours of 1pm and 6:00pm when school is in session, and 8:30am to 5:00pm when school is out of session.
