In the 90s, conspiracy theorists got all junked up on X-Files and decided that the microchip had been given to us by aliens. Television commercials have become the time to change the channel or get a snack, so the advertisements therein became less effective. Where would they spend those ad dollars to effectively reach their consumers? Into local newspapers? Well, as it turns out, newspaper readership is way down, especially among younger people. Is that because they are not reading? Quite the contrary, they are reading more than ever, but internet what they are reading has definitely changed. Instead of a local paper, try a local blog (short for web log) written by the guy down the street. Instead of Fox News, try the Drudge Report. Most children today have been exposed to computers from birth and, like everything else in your home that you’ve deemed off limits, they are going to be drawn to it almost instantly. Since there really is no getting around it (unless you’re willing to give up the convenience, and I, for one, am not), why not allow your children to explore all that the web has to offer on your terms. sites for kids

Because I work from home, my five-year-old has seen me typing away all her life and has, on more than one occasion, sat at the desk and pretended to be Mommy, banging on the keyboard and seeing what happens. Instead of leaving them to their own devices, I’ve discovered some fun sites for kids to explore when they get extra curious.

Their MySpace friend’s list is at a huge fifty-seven thousand —and that’s without the add-bots other bands use to boost their numbers. Over five- hundred thousand audio streams have been generated from their MySpace (myspace.com/thesummerob- session ).This ready-made fan base is what partially convinced record execs to give the band a listen. After multiple showcases, the band settled on Virgin for their first record. They’ve since dropped the label because, according to their MySpace, “the label sucked a big one and tried to steal our souls, so we got off and are looking for a new one.” A fan base of fifty-seven thousand is sure to attract another label in the future, but, because of MySpace and new recording techniques, they can self-promote and don’t necessarily need a label to be successful. self promotion & myspace jobs As strange as it may seem for a social networking site, people have started to use MySpace in their search for jobs. MySpace Jobs is just one of many places to search for employers in your field. These days it is standard practice for a company to make a search on MySpace if they’ve interviewed you for a position. If you’ve got anything on your MySpace that might offend a potential employer, you might want to set it to private. Companies are actually using the site to actively recruit as well. Users can make sure they belong to job-related groups (type in your profession and join the related group). If you’re in the right group, you just might find yourself with a job offer from a company that’s using the site for active recruitment. Companies also passively recruit, by putting up their own MySpace page. It’s surprising, but many large companies have a MySpace page, not just for marketing, but also as a way to garner web savvy employees. myspace marketing local blogs by erin thursby by rachel henley

what’s up with Phase II?

They aren’t finished building St. Johns Town Center, and there’s been much discussion about put- ting in Phase II. Reports have slowly trickled in, but the folks at the Town Center are a bit taciturn as to what will be going in. Back in March, Town Center developer Ben Carter announced the inclusion of Macy’s, Nordstrom and Neiman Marcus. These names have been batted about since the Town Center was still in the nascent stages of Phase I, so it’s tough to say how solid this news is. As of today, these major retailers haven’t been confirmed, although they are reported to be in negotiations with the Town Center brass. According to Tina Musico, Director of Marketing at St. Johns Town Center: “The second phase is really going to be an extension of what you already see here at the Town Center. There are going to be more upscale retailers…and a lot of them will be unique to Jacksonville…and there will be, of course, upscale restaurants as well.”

As with our appetizer, the balance of sweet and tangy was surprising and thoroughly enjoyable. The Margherita pizza is a delicious thin-crust pizza with an olive oil sauce (replacing the traditional pizza sauce), topped with real mozzarella cheese, fresh sliced roma tomatoes, and fresh basil. This was one of our favorite piz- zas on the menu, and it’s perfect for someone looking for a gourmet pizza that isn’t too heavy. The Tri-Color Pie is another ‘white’ pizza with a deliciously embattled trio of toppings. Laden with the slightly bitter flavor of arugula, which tempers the dense tanginess of sun-dried tomato while using roasted red pepper as a bridge between them, this was the most unusual of the pizzas we tried, which is indeed a compliment. The Quattro Stagione pizza features large, thin slices of prosciutto ham, artichokes, roasted red peppers and goat cheese. The artichokes on this pie weren’t the least bit strong or bitter, blending artfully with the roasted red peppers and the mild goat cheese and prepared over a traditional tomato-based sauce. A great choice for some- one looking for a unique meat/veggie combina- tion that doesn’t overload the palette. This small, innocuous pizza place, buried in a strip mall along Southside Boulevard, was an unusual treat. Historically, the best pizza places are never those glitzy towering standalone joints with recognizable name brands, but rather small parlors tucked away almost invisibly in a strip of shops. Tommy’s Pizza is a secret treasure- just the sort of place you’d hear great things about but rarely notice. As we arrived at the tiny restaurant, we noticed one of the cooks walking out front and picking fresh 5 bucks (CHEAP!) for the rosemary from a potted plant. An odd sight to be sure, but it quickly made us aware of Tommy’s attention to detail and quality. We took our seats in the compact dining area and ordered a round of beverages. Overall, their beverage selection was commendable (and the Boylan’s Birch Beer was exceptionally delicious), but the stars of the show were yet to come. As an appetizer, we had one of Tommy’s specialties; the unusual but astounding Strawberry and Tomato Salsa Foccacia. 26 april 26-may 2, 2007 | entertaining u newspaper the time the rim shots come in, you’re hooked into the fate of this desolated character “lost on land and in space.” The Cadets attack the encroaching loneliness by banding together, adding individual voices until the melancholy is defeated. I think it’s their best song, not only for the heartbreaking lyrics, but also for its perfectly matched instrumentation—echoing, beautiful, and vulnerable. What’s really nice about this album is that it does allow itself to be vulnerable. In doing so, it cre- ates a strong aesthetic—one that seems almost anachronous in its innocence and hope. They implore a loved one to “take solace in his fortress of friends,” they wish to “wake up shoulder to shoulder, head to head,” they beg “wait up friends, aww wait up friends.” The charming sincerity is what most draws in the listener—the loneliness, the companionship, the voices in unison singing about a common experi- ence. In trying to characterize this album, of course I must note that the musicianship and lyrics are driving forces, but the presiding factor seems to be the earnestness; it comes through in both the perfections and imperfections of the songs, the coughs, the sighs, the cracks and pops, as well as the intricate, layered sounds and carefully wrought melodies and lyrics. It’s no small matter that Chuck, Chad, Cash, and Isaac are superior musicians, and their varied talents create a potent combination that accounts for musical shifts that can go from minimal and JACKSONVILLE acoustic to electric melody to surf rock. Somehow these disparate styles work for The Cadets—they don’t come across as a group that’s not yet con- fident with its own sound. The Cadets album review by amy moore When the opening sounds of The Cadets’ On the Death of Science as a Major World Religion filter through to a listener’s ears, it seems significant that no song comes bursting forth fully formed. Instead, there’s a slight shuffling sound. No, to be exact, not a shuffling; it’s more a preparatory shift of…what? A floor creaking, maybe, perhaps a guitar strap being adjusted, maybe drum sticks clasped in anticipa- tion. The point is that the sound, while unrecognizable, is somehow familiar. It’s familiar because it makes you (the listener) picture the studio, or more likely, the converted bedroom, and you feel sort of comforted that this band is just like you in a way: sitting in a room, waiting for the start of something, perhaps accidentally mak- ing an unexpected sound. It’s the imperfection that’s so attractive—it seems to inject a humanity into the recording that isn’t always present in the polished, clean, and sterile end-prod- ucts that can make you feel so impossibly distant from your usual icons. Still, there is some- thing distant about this album. But it’s the kind of distance you feel when you come across a thrift store audiotape of a static-y, unknown voice or an old, yellowed photograph with an earnest stranger peering out. It’s a distance that somehow makes you feel as though you’re peeking into a far away, but intimate moment—a distance that makes you feel secretly close to someone far away. These songs are strange and elusive—they were recorded in a bathysphere, they belong to an ancient scientific archive, they’re what you found when you switched to an unknown channel on your childhood walkie-talkie, they’re the soundtrack in a planetarium, they’re the note you found in the back of a school library book. The Cadets’ songs appear as secret transmissions suspended in time, waiting for the observant investigator to dis- cover. In the song ‘Cowford – Promised Prince,’ the vocals swell and break in a way that is unique to the Cadets’ singer Chuck Smyth. While the lyrics bemoan the overwhelming loneliness of being abroad and alone, underneath, the music slowly grows from forlorn, intimate, and acoustic to an expansive produc- tion with otherworldly feedback, electric melodies, and even horns. The drums creep in bit by bit, and by

Artist: Guitar Shorty Title: We the People Release Date: 08.15.06 Label: Alligator Records Kick it back with some tight and skillful blues when you listen to Guitar Shorty’s newest album, We the People. Or you could listen to the man himself at Jack Rabbits on May 3rd. Even if you see him live, you’ll probably want to take away some of that blues for those lonely evenings and long road trips. Shorty’s albums have been few, but they’re worth the purchase price for an intense, rough-edged serving of the blues. Soaring guitars rock this CD in a way that makes it easy to understand why Jimi Hendrix used to sneak off-base when he was in the military, just to hear Guitar Shorty. The lyrics in most of the songs concern some bad woman who has done the singer wrong. It’s not incredibly original or inspiring, but the passion and skill behind the music makes you overlook the lyrics. He’s a tad over-the-top, singing, “I got your number and it’s 666” about a woman who apparently didn’t deserve his affections, but it’s some damn hot smoking blues, even if it isn’t restrained. “Who Needs a Woman Like You?” Shorty asks, later in the album, after recounting the lady’s cheating ways. Shorty answers “I tell you I do” with almost a quiet shame in some places. You can’t help but feel the man’s blues. But he isn’t always banking on women to provide him with blues topics. ‘Blues in My Blood’ recounts Shorty’s life in the blues with a throbbing bass-line. ‘Cost of Livin’’ and ‘We the People’ turn towards politics and poverty as blues-worthy subjects. Tell you what, if you want to know what the blues can really do, from those slow soulful tunes to those on the rockin’ edge, it’s time to pick up this album and give it a listen. - by erin thursby Guitar Shorty will be performing at Jack Rabbits here in Jacksonville on May 3rd. still stuck in your throat album review

Artist: Fishbone Title: Still Stuck in Your Throat Release Date: 10.30.07 Label: Discograph

As their first album of new material in more than 6 years, Fishbone’s Still Stuck In Your Throat once again delivers a multifarious sound that bounces around genres with as much energy as the band’s legendary live performances. From speedy, heavy metal hardcore tracks like ‘Let Dem Ho’s Fight’ to the up-beat, ska- flavored plea for peace and less violence, ‘Party with Saddam’ to the 9-minute funky, soulful rock track, ‘We Just Lose Our Minds,’ this album stays in your face from beginning to end. If the P-Funk Allstars were punks, Fishbone’s sound would be their funk. Most of this album is a blazing cacophony of horns, drums, and distortion with some ruff-neck reggae and off-beat breaks peppered throughout. Though the straight ska sounds of past hits like ‘’ and ‘Ugly’ aren’t here, the band’s flare for fusing funk, punk, reggae, ska, heavy metal, and a dash of soul into a sound all their own has never been stronger. If you’re already a Fishbone fan, this album fits as the next step in their growing catalog. If you’re not, it’s doubtful this recording will do anything to change your mind. That being said, the musicianship and production are solid (the brass section is especially tight) throughout all of the frenzied deliveries. The new 7-member line up includes both founding members, and Norwood Fisher, as well as guitarist (). Fishbone’s 5-week national tour finds them hitting Freebird Live on 5/01 with another vivacious show that promises to be a furious rock n’ roll ruckus. - by ian desousa Guitar Shorty will be performing at Freebird here in Jacksonville on May 1st.
