  • This Installation Explores the Final Girl Trope. Final Girls Are Used in Horror Movies, Most Commonly Within the Slasher Subgenre
This installation explores the final girl trope. Final girls are used in horror movies, most commonly within the slasher subgenre. The final girl archetype refers to a single surviving female after a murderer kills off the other significant characters. In my research, I focused on the five most iconic final girls, Sally Hardesty from A Texas Chainsaw Massacre, Laurie Strode from Halloween, Ellen Ripley from Alien, Nancy Thompson from A Nightmare on Elm Street and Sidney Prescott from Scream. These characters are the epitome of the archetype and with each girl, the trope evolved further into a multilayered social commentary. While the four girls following Sally added to the power of the trope, the significant majority of subsequent reproductions featured surface level final girls which took value away from the archetype as a whole. As a commentary on this devolution, I altered the plates five times, distorting the image more and more, with the fifth print being almost unrecognizable, in the same way that final girls have become. Chloe S. New Jersey Blood, Tits, and Screams: The Final Girl And Gender In Slasher Films Chloe S. Many critics would credit Hitchcock’s 1960 film Psycho with creating the genre but the golden age of slasher films did not occur until the 70s and the 80s1. As slasher movies became ubiquitous within teen movie culture, film critics began questioning why audiences, specifically young ones, would seek out the high levels of violence that characterized the genre.2 The taboo nature of violence sparked a powerful debate amongst film critics3, but the most popular, and arguably the most interesting explanation was that slasher movies gave the audience something that no other genre was able to offer: the satisfaction of unconscious psychological forces that we must repress in order to “function ‘properly’ in society”.

  • Sob Sisters: the Image of the Female Journalist in Popular Culture
SOB SISTERS: THE IMAGE OF THE FEMALE JOURNALIST IN POPULAR CULTURE By Joe Saltzman Director, Image of the Journalist in Popular Culture (IJPC) Joe Saltzman 2003 The Image of the Female Journalist in Popular Culture revolves around a dichotomy never quite resolved. The female journalist faces an ongoing dilemma: How to incorporate the masculine traits of journalism essential for success – being aggressive, self-reliant, curious, tough, ambitious, cynical, cocky, unsympathetic – while still being the woman society would like her to be – compassionate, caring, loving, maternal, sympathetic. Female reporters and editors in fiction have fought to overcome this central contradiction throughout the 20th century and are still fighting the battle today. Not much early fiction featured newswomen. Before 1880, there were few newspaperwomen and only about five novels written about them.1 Some real-life newswomen were well known – Margaret Fuller, Nelly Bly (Elizabeth Cochrane), Annie Laurie (Winifred Sweet or Winifred Black), Jennie June (Jane Cunningham Croly) – but most female journalists were not permitted to write on important topics. Front-page assignments, politics, finance and sports were not usually given to women. Top newsroom positions were for men only. Novels and short stories of Victorian America offered the prejudices of the day: Newspaper work, like most work outside the home, was for men only. Women were supposed to marry, have children and stay home. To become a journalist, women had to have a good excuse – perhaps a dead husband and starving children. Those who did write articles from home kept it to themselves. Few admitted they wrote for a living. Women who tried to have both marriage and a career flirted with disaster.2 The professional woman of the period was usually educated, single, and middle or upper class.

Courteney Cox Says She and Ex-Husband David Arquette Are ‘Better As Friends’ By Michelle Danzig While taping an episode of The Ellen DeGeneres Show, actress and Courteney Cox said that, despite their recent divorce, she and ex-husband David Arquette are on excellent terms, according to UsMagazine.com. Since announcing their separation in October 2012, Cox, 48, and Arquette, 41, have remained friends throughout the entire process. The Cougar Town star and Arquette have a daughter Coco, 8. Although Arquette is dating Entertainment Tonight’s Christina McClarty, Cox remains single. The two have requested joint legal and physical custody of their daughter and the removal of Cox’s surname. Cox does not recommend divorce, but she says that she appreciates David even more and that they both have grown through this experience. Arquette will remain an executive producer of Cougar Town, which will now move from ABC to TBS this Tuesday. What are some ways to tell you’re better off as just friends with someone? Cupid’s Advice: Whether you’re curious if your friendship is worth examining on a romantic level or you and your significant other suffer a split but remain friends, it is difficult to decide whether you are better off in one situation or the other. Here are some ways you can tell that you and your partner are better of as friends: 1. You have the companionship but lack intimacy: This is probably the easiest way to tell that you and your significant other are better off as friends. If you enjoy doing activities together and genuinely care about the other person but the intimacy has been lost, it’s almost certain that your relationship has simply become one between friends.

Not many people know this, but I’ve always considered myself an artist of sorts. Ever since I was a young kid, I invariably find myself passing the time by doodling, drawing, and, on occasion, even painting. In the space between my paper and pencil, and in those moments when inspiration would strike, my imagination would run amok and these bigger-than-life personas - football players and comic book characters and, of course, professional wrestlers - would come to life. I wasn’t aware of this until much later, but for all those years my mother would quietly steal away my drawings, saving them for all prosperity, and perhaps giving her a way to relive all of those memories of me as a child. That’s exactly what happened to me when she showed me those old sketches of Iron Man and Walter Payton and Fred Flintstone and Hulk Hogan. I found myself instantly transported back to a time where things were simpler and characters were real and the art was pure. I get a lot of really similar feelings when I look at the incredible art that Rob Schamberger has shared with 2 foreward us all. Jan. 9, 2009 - PRLog -- Feeding off the company's successful RiffTrax Live! events in California, RiffTrax has announced their intention to bring the popular format to fans across the country and the world over the internet, courtesy of their partner, uStream.tv. The inaugural RiffTrax Live! webcast will begin on January 15th, 2009 at 6:00 PM PST on the RiffTrax website, and will be freely available to anyone who wishes to participate in this historic event. The evening's format will be familiar to fans of the website. Headlining the event will be the creative masterminds behind television's cult sensation, Mystery Science Theater 3000. The show's stars and lead writers--Michael J. Nelson, Kevin Murphy and Bill Corbett--will add their humorous, sarcastic and mocking commentary to a short film from 1951, "Self-Conscious Guy," as live audiences watch and listen along with them. Afterwords, fans will be able to participate in a question-and-answer session with the three comedians.
