  • Fire Along the Transition Between the Amazon Forest and Cerrado
Fire Along the Transition Between the Amazon Forest and the Cerrado Ecosystems1 Gustavo Hees de Negreiros23, David Sandberg4, Ernesto Alvarado5, Thomas Hinckley4, Daniel C. Nepstad6, and Marcos Pereira7 ABSTRACT Most of the fires in Amazonia happen along an arc of deforestation, which generally follows the transition between the Amazon evergreen forests and the savannas (cerrado). The evergreen primary forest acts as a giant fire break, while the cerrado has adapted to frequent fires. The transitional zone between these two ecosystems is a fragile boundary controlled by very dynamic ecosystem processes. It is also an area with heavy pressures from human settlements that use fire as a way to clear and manage the land. Canopy disturbance of the primary forest due to increased selective logging and deforestation, along with extended droughts, alters the hydrological equilibrium of this ecosystem and therefore, the ecotone. High temperatures and very low relative humidity in disturbed stands increase the flammability of the primary forest. The deep rooting systems have an important role in supplying water during the dry season. As precipitation decreases, the primary forest is able to tap deep soil water; however, if the water supply is interrupted during an exceptionally dry year, the vegetation can dry and suffer leaf loss. Light penetration then increases, fuel moisture decreases, and fuels become dangerously flammable. This paper presents the main ideas of a fire susceptibility model that is being developed for the region. Key words: Fire, Forest Savanna Ecotone, Water Stress, Rooting Depth, GIS, Modeling, Tropics, Brazil. I - INTRODUCTION Fire and tropical rain forest are topics that seem unrelated; however today most of world’s vegetation fires occur in the tropical and subtropical regions (Goldammer and Manan 1996).

Here are their albums, spanning 29 years, presented from worst to best. Just about every Cure album is worth picking up, and even those ranked lowest boast worthwhile moments. Also worth noting is that the 13 studio albums do not tell the whole story. The Cure have released multiple live albums (the best are 1984’s Concert , 1991’s Entreat and 1993’s Show ), a kaleidoscopic remix collection (1990’s Mixed Up ), and dozens of diverse b-sides not available on any of the albums. The vast majority of those are included on the essential 2004 box-set Join the Dots: B-sides & Rarities 1978-2001 . As hardened fans will tell you, many of the Cure’s b- sides are every bit as strong as their album tracks and singles. Here are their albums, spanning 29 years, presented from worst to best. Obviously every Cure fan has their own take, and would end up with a different ranking. There are no right answers. A strong argument could be made for at least four of the Cure’s albums to be at the top. Regardless, it’s nice to be able to look back with some distance on the entire catalog to see where everything fits. The Cure’s fascinating musical legacy will endure for generations of new fans. 13. The Cure (2004) Somehow, Robert Smith got into his head the notion that it would be a good idea to work with producer Ross Robinson, known for his collaborations with Korn, Slipknot and, Gods help us, Limp Bizkit.

  • The Passionate Puritan Mary Jane Mander Was Born in Ramarama, a Small Settlement Near Auckland, in 1877
The Passionate Puritan mary jane mander was born in Ramarama, a small settlement near Auckland, in 1877. The daughter of pioneering parents, she led an itinerant childhood, her father’s kauri-milling business taking the family to various parts of the far north of New Zealand. Although much of her adult life was spent in New York and London, the far north was the enduring source of inspiration for her fiction, begin- ning with The Story of a New Zealand River (1920). This first novel examines the life and marriage of an Englishwoman transplanted to a timber-milling settlement on the banks of the Otamatea River. Poorly received in New Zealand at the time, it is now popular and widely recognized as one of the important founding classics of New Zealand literature. The Passionate Puritan (1921), The Strange Attraction (1922) and Allen Adair (1925) quickly followed. This quartet of novels portrays New Zealand pioneer society with an attentive realism and seriousness of purpose that no compatriot before her had sustained at such length. Together they constitute one of our most lively and accessible records of the colonial period of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Mander’s last two novels, The Besieging City (1926) and Pins and Pinnacles (1928), are set in New York and London respectively. Fluent and professional works, they nevertheless lack the intrinsic interest of Mander’s efforts to capture her own country in prose, and are now generally regarded as a coda to her writing career. She returned to New Zealand in 1932, but never managed to write another novel.
