Fire Along the Transition Between the Amazon Forest and Cerrado
Fire Along the Transition Between the Amazon Forest and the Cerrado Ecosystems1 Gustavo Hees de Negreiros23, David Sandberg4, Ernesto Alvarado5, Thomas Hinckley4, Daniel C. Nepstad6, and Marcos Pereira7 ABSTRACT Most of the fires in Amazonia happen along an arc of deforestation, which generally follows the transition between the Amazon evergreen forests and the savannas (cerrado). The evergreen primary forest acts as a giant fire break, while the cerrado has adapted to frequent fires. The transitional zone between these two ecosystems is a fragile boundary controlled by very dynamic ecosystem processes. It is also an area with heavy pressures from human settlements that use fire as a way to clear and manage the land. Canopy disturbance of the primary forest due to increased selective logging and deforestation, along with extended droughts, alters the hydrological equilibrium of this ecosystem and therefore, the ecotone. High temperatures and very low relative humidity in disturbed stands increase the flammability of the primary forest. The deep rooting systems have an important role in supplying water during the dry season. As precipitation decreases, the primary forest is able to tap deep soil water; however, if the water supply is interrupted during an exceptionally dry year, the vegetation can dry and suffer leaf loss. Light penetration then increases, fuel moisture decreases, and fuels become dangerously flammable. This paper presents the main ideas of a fire susceptibility model that is being developed for the region. Key words: Fire, Forest Savanna Ecotone, Water Stress, Rooting Depth, GIS, Modeling, Tropics, Brazil. I - INTRODUCTION Fire and tropical rain forest are topics that seem unrelated; however today most of world’s vegetation fires occur in the tropical and subtropical regions (Goldammer and Manan 1996). -

Saiichi Sugiyama Band Epk 2016
SAIICHI SUGIYAMA BAND EPK (July 2016) British blues-rock guitarist Saiichi Sugiyama and his band are touring the UK in September 2016 ahead of their new album release next year. Saiichi Sugiyama Band is a group of musicians hailing from Surrey/London that harks back to the halcyon days of rock and soul, 1965-1974, brought together in 2010 by the guitarist/composer Saiichi [pronounced: “sigh-eee- chee”], who has a career spanning 25 years as a solo artist in the British blues scene. The core of the group is Rietta Austin (lead vocals), Saiichi Sugiyama (guitar/vocals/composer), Ben Reed (bass guitar) and Mune Sugiyama (producer/arranger/drums). When playing live, the group are augmented by touring musicians including Stuart Dixon (rhythm guitar), Katrin Yr (lead vocals) and Wez Johnson (drums). The former members Lizzie Hibbert (lead vocals) and Dave Munch Moore (keys) also record with the group in studio. The group has been spending the past months working on their new studio album in various recording studios, a follow up to the studio live album “the Smokehouse Sessions” from 2014. The new album will include a track entitled “Melting Away”, written by Saiichi and featuring the late bass hero Andy Fraser, ex-Free and composer of the 1970 smash single, “All Right Now.” The initial inspiration for “Melting Away” came to Saiichi while on a trip to his native Japan. To Saiichi the melody was reminiscent of Free guitarist Paul Kossoff, who died in 1976. Creating a demo when he returned home to the UK, Saiichi came up with bass parts that brought Free bassman Andy Fraser to mind. -

The Velvet Underground By: Kao-Ying Chen Shengsheng Xu Makenna Borg Sundeep Dhanju Sarah Lindholm Group Introduction The Velvet Underground helped create one of the first proto-punk songs and paved the path for future songs alike. Our group chose this group because it is one of those groups many people do not pay attention to very often and they are very unique and should be one that people should learn about. Shengsheng Biography The Velvet Underground was an American rock band formed in New York City in 1964. They are also known as The Warlocks and The Falling Spikes. Best-known members: Lou Reed and John Cale. 1967 debut album, “The Velvet Underground & Nico” was named the 13th Greatest Album of All Time, and the “most prophetic rock album ever http://t2.gstatic.com/images?q=tbn:ANd9GcTpZBIJzRM1H- made” by Rolling Stone in 2003. GhQN6gcpQ10MWXGlqkK03oo543ZbNUefuLNAvVRA Ranked #19 on the “100 Greatest Artists of All Time” by Rolling Stone. Shengsheng Biography From 1964-1965: Lou Reed (worked as a songwriter) met John Cale (Welshman who came to United States to study classical music) and they formed, The Primitives. Reed and Cale recruited Sterling Morrison to play the guitar (college classmate of Reed’s) as a replacement for Walter De Maria. Angus MacLise joined as a percussionist to form a group of four. And this quartet was first named The Warlocks, then The Falling Spikes. Introduced by Michael Leigh, the name “The Velvet Underground” was finally adopted by the group in Nov 1965.
