Specialist periodical literature is scanned in full (as available at the libraries at ZSS and Z or received by the compilers). Also included is information supplied to the compilers direct. It is urgently requested that any reprints of papers not published in readily available botanical literature be sent to the compilers. — Validly published names are given in bold face type, accompanied by an indication of the nomenclatu- ral type (name or specimen dependent on rank), followed by the herbarium acronyms of the herbaria where the holotype and possible isotypes are said to be deposited (first acronym for holotype), accord- ing to Index Herbariorum, ed. 8 and supplements as published in Taxon. Invalid, illegitimate, or incor- rect names are given in italic type face. In either case a full bibliographic reference is given. For new combinations, the basionym is also listed. For invalid, illegitimate or incorrect names, the articles of the ICBN which have been contravened are indicated in brackets (note that the numbering of some regularly cited articles has changed in the Tokyo (1994) edition of ICBN). -

ABSTRACT The morphological characteristics of five species of pollen from the subfamily Cactoideae, family Cactaceae, were described: Three species, Echinopsis chalaensis (Rauh & Backeb.) Friedrich & G.D.Rowley, Haageocereus decumbens (Vaupel) Backeb. and Pygmaeocereus sp. Johnson & Backeb., (Trichocereeae tribe); Corryocactus brevistylus (K. Schum. ex Vaupel) Britton & Rose (Pachycereeae tribe) and Neoraimondia arequipensis (Meyen) Backeb., (Browningieae tribe). All pollen grains observed under a light microscope appeared in monades, shape varying from spheroidal to spheroidal oblate; all colpate, with the exception of C. brevistylus, with spinules < 1 µm to 2 µm; exine thickness varied 2 - 3 µm; tectum without perceptible differences, always was pierced. -

(Doors open 6:30 p.m.) Deaf & Hard of Hearing Service Center (DHHSC), 5340 North Fresno Street, Fresno PROGRAM: Lithops: The Wild and the Tame PRESENTOR: Doug Dawson Doug began his passion for Lithops in the 1990’s. Previous to then, he would occasionally buy one and shortly thereafter kill the poor thing. During the last 20 years he has grown most of his lithops from seed in the extremely harsh desert climate of Phoenix. The four summer months have regular temperatures at night around 90deg and days around 110deg. Doug will discuss what it takes to keep these colorful “living stones” alive. The PowerPoint will display many photos of what the plants look like in habitat in Namibia and South Africa. Then photos of plants in Doug’s collection will be shown, with many colorful cultivars as well as many of the species and varieties. For those of you who are not yet open to including lithops in your collection, it is hoped that you will be convinced to give them a try. Doug is a retired math professor and does extensive botanical travels to areas of the world where succulents grow, include Mexico, Chile, Argentina, Yemen, Socotra, Africa, and his own state of Arizona. He has organized 15 botanical exploratory trips to South Africa and Namibia, camping on local farms and public areas for three weeks and exploring the surrounding mountains and hills by day. -

The aim of this study was to test the effect of different temperatures on the germination of M. violaceus. Three treatments were conducted: a constant temperature of 25°C, a 20-35°C alternating temperature, both inside germination chamber, and an alternating temperature under room temperature (mean temperature ranged from 25-37°C). The fi nal seed germination rates at the alternating temperature treatments were not signifi cantly different (65% in the seed germinator and 62.5% at room condition). However, both treatments with alternating temperatures had signifi cantly higher germination rates compared to the treatment kept at the constant temperature (8%). Our study showed that alternating temperatures between 20 and 37°C provides satisfactory conditions to induce a high percentage of seed germination of M. -

A Debreceni Pozsgástárban megjelentetésre szánt írások betördelést követő terjedelme 73 oldalt tett ki, ezért két cikket, sajnos, ki kellett venni a már korábban említett elvek szerint. A két kivett cikk egyike: Fábián László; Mindenki másként csinálja, másika: Hansjörg Jucker; Egy ördögien szép aylostera keserű története. Következő számunkban mindkettő közlésre kerül. Dr. Nemes Lajos Adatok a magyarországi kaktuszgyűjtés történetéhez c. terjedelmes írásában újabb adatokkal egészítette ki a hazai kaktuszgyűjtés történetét. „Munkám címválasztása tudatos volt. A gyűjtés teljes hazai (Kárpát-medencei) feldolgozása kimerítené egy kutató munkáját. Különösen a II. Világháború utáni időszak hazai szakköreinek, egyesületi szervezeteinek nehezen elérhetők az irodalmi és levéltári forrásai. A címben foglalt tartalom is sok kiegészítésre szorul, mert új és újabb forrásanyagok kerülhetnek elő levéltári és szakirodalmi kutatások nyomán. Ezek tartalmukat illetően kell, hogy kiegészítsék soraimat a megfelelő időszakban a későbbiekben. A kaktuszgyűjtésre vonatkozó levéltári források többnyire elrejtve találhatók az inventáriumokban utalások vagy kiegészítések formájában. Néha egy-egy utazó tájékoztató sorai utalhatnak gyűjtésünk tárgyaira, máskor egy ismertetés vagy történeti esemény környezetének leírásában bukkannak fel öreg szukkulens növények nevei, utalva rá, hogy több évtizede léteznek már ott pozsgások. Véleményem szerint több ismeretlen szukkulens dokumentum rejtőzik még a fel nem tárt forrásokban, mint amennyi eddig elénk tárult, gondolok itt az egykori főúri birtokok, kastélyok leltárában megbúvó exotikus növényállományra. McIntosh Denmoza erythrocephala SEED Denmoza rhodocantha SEED DENMOZA ERYTHROCEPHALA FLOWERS from Mrs L.E.McIntosh This plant was grown from seed which I purchased from Winter in 1957 and it flowered for the first time at the age of ten years whilst still globular. The plant has elongated over the last five years and is now 8" tall and 5" across (not Including the spines). It is an attractive plant with a brownish green body, many large pink wool Iy areoles, heavy spines which are deep red when new, passing to rust red and fin a lly to grey at the bottom of the p la n t. When globular it had several silky white hairlike bristles about 1" long from all the areoles but it has now lost these from the old growth and only retains them in the top third of the plant. The buds appear in early summer as smalI balls of silky white hairs from the top of the areoles in last season's growth. They take approximately four weeks to grow to maturity and are then about 2" tall, tightly closed at the top and slightly zygomorphic, bright purple in colour with very fleshy shiny scales about 5/8" long, symmetrically arranged and covering the tube; tufts of white silky hairs grow out from under the scales. The top of the flower then opens to reveal a row of petals, slightly longer than the scales, lighter in colour with an orange overtone and much finer in texture, from which protrudes a large pinky cream stigma with 8 lobes surrounded by a tightly packed bunch of stamens of the same colour as the petals, the colour paling to almost white at the base of the filaments and shading out to deep purple anthers topped with purple pollen. -

A taxonomic backbone at the genus level is provided that reflects the current state of knowledge and accepts 749 genera for the order. A detailed review of the literature of the past two decades shows that enormous progress has been made in understanding overall phylogenetic relationships in Caryophyllales. The process of re-circumscribing families in order to be monophyletic appears to be largely complete and has led to the recognition of eight new families (Anacampserotaceae, Kewaceae, Limeaceae, Lophiocarpaceae, Macarthuriaceae, Microteaceae, Montiaceae and Talinaceae), while the phylogenetic evaluation of generic concepts is still well underway. As a result of this, the number of genera has increased by more than ten percent in comparison to the last complete treatments in the Families and genera of vascular plants” series. A checklist with all currently accepted genus names in Caryophyllales, as well as nomenclatural references, type names and synonymy is presented. Notes indicate how extensively the respective genera have been studied in a phylogenetic context. -

Cold Hardy Landscape Cacti & Succulents for Central Texas Jeff Pavlat 3/11 The following is a list of recommended landscape plants for Central Texas. Keep in mind that there is a great deal of temperature variation across the region. Temperatures in outlying areas are in some cases 10 to 15 degrees colder than those in town. The cold tolerances listed are approximate. It is important to recognize that there are a number of factors which determine hardiness. Plants placed on south facing slopes receive more solar heat and tend to have a better chance of being undamaged. Plants also fair better with some overhead protection from a tree or shrub. It also helps for them to be placed where they will not receive direct north wind. Generally, low-growing plants receive more ground heat than taller plants and are less likely to freeze. The state of the plant as it enters freezing temperatures is an important factor as well. For instance, many cacti and succulents will endure considerably colder temperatures when dry rather than wet (In fact, cold and wet is often a lethal combination for many cact i). Plants of the same species originating from different parts of the plant’s native range can also result in higher or lower tolerances. It is possible to have two plants of the same species placed side by side and have one freeze, while the other survives.
