2011 Andelunas Cellars Torrontesproduct-timed-pdf - Mendoza, - Michel Rolland Winemaking

Why We're Drinking It

This is where the nectar of the gods comes from, next to the Andes mountains that touch the sky. It’s where heavenly whites nurtured by consulting enologist Michel Rolland (the one and only!) with supreme concentration, structure, and aromatic complexity are born that, if you associate Mendoza with alone, you’re in for a bright, white surprise.

Three things to know:

• Beyond Malbec. Though Argentina’s flagship grape has long thrived on its rocky, sundrenched slopes, there's a white counterpoint for the top Argentinian red. Torrontes is known as the Argentina's local favorite white wine, and is marked by its floral aromas, which are distinctive of its membership of the Muscat family. Its aromas are often described as lightly spicy, with the fragrance of white flowers.

• The Rolland Factor. With hundreds of clients across 13 countries and monikers like Wall Street Journal’s “The Grape Wizard of Bordeaux,” Rolland’s influence is everywhere. His signature style is known for the forward fruit and oak influence preferred by Robert Parker, along with a commitment to wines that can be drunk young.

• Location, location, location: from vineyards situated in Lavalle, in the north of Mendoza, this is a low altitude region with an average temperature higher than the rest of Mendoza, ideal for cultivating Torrontes Riojano vines. The clusters generally bear small-sized berries, and the amount of sunshine they are exposed to is such that their aromatic characteristics are preserved.

The Story to Know

From the winery: Andeluna Cellars, a perfected combination of top quality grapes, history and romance. For generations, Argentina has grown and perfected the traditional grape varieties of the Old World. But the feet of Andeluna don't rest in the soil of the Old World. Instead, they are planted firmly in the New World in a stunning series of vineyards that climb up the foothills of the Andes. The 48,000 square foot state-of-the-art winery is surrounded by vineyards planted by the descendants of one of those pioneering families of Argentina's wine industry, who emigrated from Italy. Andeluna Cellars was founded in 2003, by H. Ward Lay from USA and Ricardo Reina Rutini from Argentina, with the vision of being recognized as one of the top producers of high-quality wines from Argentina. Its wines have already been praised worldwide by the press obtaining great awards and reviews. Since the end of 2007 Andeluna belongs only to the Lay's family.

Ward Lay was introduced to the business world by his father, Herman W. Lay, founder of Frito-Lay and former Chairman of the Board of PepsiCo. A well-known international businessman, Ward had many interests - especially in Argentina. He used to live much of the year at Estancia Alicura, his 200,000 acre cattle ranch and luxury guest ranching, fishing and hunting lodge in the Argentine Patagonia. He brought world vision and an indomitable drive for quality to Andeluna. He understood that great wines require more than just superior quality grapes; they require a combination of world-class winemaking techniques, state-of-the-art facilities and outstanding people to create a truly superb wine. Ward Lay passed away on October 2011. His family continues with his vision.

Premium quality wine starts with premium quality grapes, and this is the essence of Andeluna. Andeluna cultivates traditional varietals like Malbec, Cabernet Sauvignon, , Chardonnay and Cabernet Franc in its vineyards located in Tupungato, Mendoza at more than 1300 meters (4300 feet) above see level. French grape varieties, Argentine soils, Italian ancestry, world class winemaking, American drive, the latest in technology and a team of people who all seek the same goal: to make the greatest wines in the world.

Reviews

Andeluna is a top dog in the world of Argentinian wine, and they are experts at crafting a delicious Torrontes. Wildly aromatic with notes of green apple, honeysuckle, lime zest and a hint of kiwi. The test of a good Torrontes is the nerve, a powerful acidity and structure to balance with the sweet fruit flavors, and this bottle has nerve in spades. The wine is rich and filled with fruit, but by no means sweet, a perfect summer sipper and you can also be creative with your pairings, think Asian food. Drink now through 2016. - DZ

Tropical-smelling and typically melony for the variety, this features citrusy acidity that props up melon, pear and papaya flavors. -Wine Enthusiast
