  • A Phytochemical and Ethnopharmacological Review of the Genus Erythrina
16 A Phytochemical and Ethnopharmacological Review of the Genus Erythrina João X. de Araújo-Júnior, Mariana S.G. de Oliveira, Pedro G.V. Aquino, Magna S. Alexandre-Moreira and Antônio E.G. Sant’Ana Universidade Federal de Alagoas Brazil 1. Introduction Considered in acient times as a connection to the divine, the use of this medicinal plant is as old as human civilization itself. Whole nations dominated its secrets, often associated with magic and religious rites, searching in nature’s resources to improve life conditions, and increase chances of survival (Herbarium, 2008). In 1978, the World Health Organization (WHO) recognized folk medicine and its beneficial effects to health, during the Alma Ata conference, which published in 1985 that approximatly 80% of the global population, resorted to traditional medicine as their primary health treatment (Herbarium, 2008). Medicinal plants have been used as a means of curing or preventing diseases, now called phytotherapy, in all regions of the world, with regional variations due to the influence of cultural characteristics of the population, as well as its flora, soil and climate (Lewinsohn, 2003). Since the nineteenth century, humanity discovered the endless and diverse therapeutic arsenal present in medicinal plants, due to the discovery of active substances that in their natural state or after chemical transformation showed biological activity, and often already confirmed by popular use and/or proven scientifically (Miguel & Miguel, 2004). According to Yamada (1998) it is necessary to carry out more studies and to propagate medicinal plant utilization as a way to diminish the costs of public health programs since the utilization of these plants may constitute a very useful therapeutic value due their efficacy coupled with low operating costs and the relative ease of obtaining the plants (Matos, 1994).

Also, extracts from its shoots and stems are popularly used as a herbal medicine with validated activity on the central nervous system. The objective of this study was to evaluate E. mulungu and E. velutina seed germination and seedling development potential aiming commercial scale production of those species. Seeds stored for one or twelve months at 10˚C ± 2˚C were sown in sand, soil or Plantmax® substrates and evaluated for germination and seedling development. Subsequently, seedlings sprouted in Plantmax® were transferred to polyethylene bags and kept in greenhouse, under direct sunlight for plant development (plant height, stem diameter and root length pivoting) evaluations. Four-month-old plantlets were transplanted to the field and after a period of one year the collar diameter and shoot height (of each plant were measured.

  • Mulungu – Rainforest Anxiolytic
16 Mulungu – Rainforest Anxiolytic Patocka Jiri Department of Radiology and Toxicology, Faculty of Health and Social Studies University of South Bohemia Ceske Budejovice Czech Republic 1. Introduction There are over one hundred species of plants of the genus Erythrina in the tropics and many of them are native to the American continent (Neill 1988). Erythrina species are known to produce alkaloids, flavonoids and terpenes (Garcia-Mateos et al., 1998). As with other species of Erythrina, alkaloids appear to be one of the main constituents mulungu (Parsons and Palframan, 2010). Mulungu (Erythrina mulungu) is a branched tree native to Brazil, growing in rain-forestry of Amazonia. Since its flowers are the same red color as coral, the plant is sometimes also called "flor de coral" and in English literature "coral tree". The designation Erythrina also includes the species Erythrina velutina, endemic to the semi-arid regions of Northeastern Brazil, and Erythrina mulungu, a plant native to Southern Brazil. In native herbal medicine, a leaf or bark decoction or tincture from mulungu has long been used in folk medicine due to their tranquilizing effects and as natural sedative. It is also anxiolytic and antibacterial (Garín-Aguilar et al., 2000). In both Brazil and Peru mulungu is used for epilepsy (Vasconcelos et al., 2007). Practitioners in the United States use mulungu to quiet hysteria from trauma or shock, as a mild sedative to calm the nervous system, to treat insomnia and promote healthy sleeping patterns. Anxiety disorders are among the most prevalent psychiatric diseases and mulungu offers novel therapy chance (Balbani et al., 2009; Patocka, 2009).

Botanics: Targets and Therapy Dovepress open access to scientific and medical research Open Access Full Text Article REVIEW A systematic updated review of scientifically tested selected plants used for anxiety disorders Ashutosh Sharma Abstract: The aim of this review is to provide a summary on multidisciplinary scientific Alexandre Cardoso-Taketa information obtained from medicinal plants used worldwide to treat anxiety, focusing on phar- Griselda García macological and clinical studies. The bibliographical investigation was carried out by consulting María Luisa Villarreal five peer-reviewed worldwide database publications for references, and patents. The information gathered on plants with attributed anxiolytic properties are presented as follows: (1) plant extracts Centro de Investigación en Biotecnología, Universidad Autónoma with anxiolytic properties evaluated in animal models; (2) plants with clinical trials; (3) identi- del Estado de Morelos, Cuernavaca, fied active compounds in plants that have been assayed in animal models; (4) mechanism of Mexico action of anxiolytic plant extracts and compounds; and (5) registered patents for anxiolytic plant preparations. We recorded 112 plant species belonging to 63 botanical families for which the For personal use only. anxiolytic properties had been tested in animal models. Eleven plant species to treat general anxiety disorders as well as eleven species to treat anxiety-associated conditions, had been documented by clinical trials. Thirty-three registers for active compounds belonging to five general types of secondary metabolites had also been recorded. The mechanism of action at the central nervous system level had been determined in 33 plant species, either in their extracts or isolated compounds. Forty-seven patent registrations for plant preparations to be used for the treatment of anxiety were included.
