Lutz4 Abstract Background: The effects of climate on plant species ranges are well appreciated, but the effects of other processes, such as fire, on plant species distribution are less well understood. We used a dataset of 561 plots 0.1 ha in size located throughout Yosemite National Park, in the Sierra Nevada of California, USA, to determine the joint effects of fire and climate on woody plant species. We analyzed the effect of climate (annual actual evapotranspiration [AET], climatic water deficit [Deficit]) and fire characteristics (occurrence [BURN] for all plots, fire return interval departure [FRID] for unburned plots, and severity of the most severe fire [dNBR]) on the distribution of woody plant species. Results: Of 43 species that were present on at least two plots, 38 species occurred on five or more plots. Of those 38 species, models for the distribution of 13 species (34%) were significantly improved by including the variable for fire occurrence (BURN). Models for the distribution of 10 species (26%) were significantly improved by including FRID, and two species (5%) were improved by including dNBR. Species for which distribution models were improved by inclusion of fire variables included some of the most areally extensive woody plants. Species and ecological zones were aligned along an AET-Deficit gradient from cool and moist to hot and dry conditions. -

University of Utah UNDERGRADUATE RESEARCH JOURNAL ESTABLISHING A TEMPORAL DISTRIBUTION FOR CERAMICS OF THE WASHINGTON COUNTY, UT VIRGIN RIVER BRANCH OF THE ANCESTRAL PUEBLOAN Crystal Spagnuolo (Dr. Brian Codding; Kenneth Blake Vernon, MA) Department of Anthropology Dating archaeological sites is important for establishing patterns in settlement, trade, resource use, and population estimates of prehistoric peoples. Using dated sites, we can see patterns in how a culture such as the Ancestral Puebloan went from a foraging subsistence to agricultural settlements with far-reaching trade networks. Or, we can understand when the Ancestral Puebloan abandoned certain areas of the American Southwest and pair this with climate data to understand how climate might be a factor. In order to do so however, we must first have a reliable timeline of these events, built from archaeological sites that are reliably dated. Unfortunately, direct dating via radiocarbon or dendrochronology is costly and not always possible due to the biodegradable nature of the organic materials needed for such dating. Using a relative dating system that employs ceramics is a cost-effective alternative. Here I continue work begun by The Archaeological Center at the University of Utah to generate a ceramic dating system for the area encompassing Southwest Utah, focusing on Washington County, using extant site data from this region. While the prehistoric inhabitants of this area were Ancestral Puebloan, the ceramic traditions were separate, and therefore merit their own dating analysis (Lyneis, 1995; Spangler, Yaworsky, Vernon, & Codding, 2019). Currently, dating of sites in the region is difficult, both due to the expense of direct dating techniques (radiocarbon and dendrochronology) and the lack of defined time periods for ceramics types. -

December,1945 248 THE WILSON BULLETIN Vol. 57, No. 4 The ranges of many birds seem to conform to the outlines of the area occupied by their preferred vegetational “life form,” while others occupy only parts of it and reach either their northern or their south- ern limits deep within it. This indicates that they are not entirely re- stricted in their distribution by dominant forms of vegetation. This, then, might leave room within the biotic concept for the application of something like Merriam’s temperature concept, or some other modifica- tion. Thus it appears that the biome is not much more satisfactory than the life zone in describing bird distribution. Birds which occupy the developmental stages of a biome are often found in other biomes as well. This is because the life forms of the vegetation that compose the developmental stages of one biome are often duplicated in other biomes. Birds which occupy the climax portion of a biome are most frequently restricted to that biome and are indi- cators of it. This is because the climax life forms are often peculiar to that one biome. Birds appear to fit the life zone concept best in climax forest in those areas where temperature agrees with the vegetation, as, for ex- ample, in the Canadian and Hudsonian zones. Briefly, the physical aspects, or “life form,” of the vegetation seems to be the most important factor influencing land bird distribution, but this is further modified variously by climatic influences, physical bar- riers or other geographical factors, interspecific competition, population pressures, and probably also by other less tangible factors. -

Archaeologic and ethnographic sources have been used to create a major new quant ive database on Southwest-southern California trade. I draw on this data base to characterize the routes and intensity of exchange, as well as speci objects involved in native trade networks. facts made of Olivella and Halio s shells were traded eastward from the southern California Channel Islands into the Anasazi, Mogollon, and Hohokam regions of the Southwest in south Nevada, Arizona, and New Mexico.
