Lutz4 Abstract Background: The effects of climate on plant species ranges are well appreciated, but the effects of other processes, such as fire, on plant species distribution are less well understood. We used a dataset of 561 plots 0.1 ha in size located throughout Yosemite National Park, in the Sierra Nevada of California, USA, to determine the joint effects of fire and climate on woody plant species. We analyzed the effect of climate (annual actual evapotranspiration [AET], climatic water deficit [Deficit]) and fire characteristics (occurrence [BURN] for all plots, fire return interval departure [FRID] for unburned plots, and severity of the most severe fire [dNBR]) on the distribution of woody plant species. Results: Of 43 species that were present on at least two plots, 38 species occurred on five or more plots. Of those 38 species, models for the distribution of 13 species (34%) were significantly improved by including the variable for fire occurrence (BURN). Models for the distribution of 10 species (26%) were significantly improved by including FRID, and two species (5%) were improved by including dNBR. Species for which distribution models were improved by inclusion of fire variables included some of the most areally extensive woody plants. Species and ecological zones were aligned along an AET-Deficit gradient from cool and moist to hot and dry conditions. -

The deformation shows variations in structural style and shortening along and across the strike of the orogen, as a result of the dynamics of the subduction system and the features of the upper plate. In this work, we analyse the development of thin-skinned and thick-skinned fold and thrust belts in the Southern Central Andes (30–36° S). The pre-Andean history of the area determined the formation of different basement domains with distinct lithological compositions, as a result of terrane accretions during Palaeozoic time, the development of a widespread Permo-Triassic magmatic province and long-lasting arc activity. Basin development during Palaeozoic and Mesozoic times produced thick sedimentary successions in different parts of the study area. Based on estimations of strength for the different basement and sedimentary rocks, calculated using geophysical estimates of rock physical properties, we propose that the contrast in strength between basement and cover is the main control on structural style (thin- v. -

Course description Students will get a cross-cultural experience and perspectives on Argentina’s main productive areas and its historic and economic role as a major food producer, where people, culture, landscapes, plant and animal life are diverse. In addition, they will be culturally enriched by experiencing a blend of culture, language, history, art and traditions related to the main productive areas. The course comprises different group activities, such as, discussion groups, seminars, etc. Courseload 45 hours (2 hours period, 4 days a week plus visit sites). Students will have the chance to visit main productive sites and experience short study trips (as livestock markets, ecological reservation and Delta del Paraná Biosphere Reserve) throughout the program. Gridded temperature data provided by the University of Delaware were analysed to calculate monthly and annual cumulative HDDs. Mean, maximum and minimum values as well as the average duration of the heating season are used to characterize the mean features of the region. Spatial variations are driven by latitude and altitude. The analysis of the temporal distribution of HDDs reveals that the centre of the mean heating season varies from mid-June to mid-July. The length of the cold season grows with increasing latitude and westward with increasing altitude. In the high Andes, the heating season extends all year round. S-mode principal component analysis is used to identify sub-groups of grid points with similar temporal variability. Negative trends in annual cumulative HDDs are detected in most of the country. Linear and nonlinear trends as well as temporal statistics are examined for inter- and intra-annual variability of HDDs to discuss its potential incidence on residential use of natural gas. Seasonal increases in natural gas consumption in the country, including the effect of regional price benefits, could be now better explained not only by population growth but also by the spatial and temporal characterization of the HDD season. -

Anomalous 10 years as 1941, 1982-83, 1997-98 and 2015-16 signified enormous fluvial discharges draining towards the Pacific 11 Ocean, but also to the Atlantic. These floods affected large cities built on medium-latitudinal Andes (Lima, Quito, 12 Salta), but also those located at floodplains, as Porto Alegre, Blumenau, Curitiba, Asunción, Santa Fe and Buenos 13 Aires. Maximum discharge months are particular and easily distinguished along time series from watersheds located 14 at the South American Arid Diagonal. At watersheds conditioned by precipitations delivered from the Atlantic or 15 Pacific anti-cyclonic centers, the ENSO-triggered floods are more difficult to discern. The floods of 1941 affected 16 70,000 inhabitants in Porto Alegre. In 1983, Blumenau city was flooded during several days; and the Paraná River 17 multiplied 15 times the width of its middle floodplain. That year, the Colorado River in Northern Patagonia 18 connected for the last time to the Desagûadero – Chadileuvú - Curacó system and its delta received saline water for 19 the last time. -

Lithium extraction in Argentina: a case study on the social and environmental impacts Pía Marchegiani, Jasmin Höglund Hellgren and Leandro Gómez. Executive summary The global demand for lithium has grown significantly over recent years and is expected to grow further due to its use in batteries for different products. Lithium is used in smaller electronic devices such as mobile phones and laptops but also for larger batteries found in electric vehicles and mobility vehicles. This growing demand has generated a series of policy responses in different countries in the southern cone triangle (Argentina, Bolivia and Chile), which together hold around 80 per cent of the world’s lithium salt brine reserves in their salt flats in the Puna area. Although Argentina has been extracting lithium since 1997, for a long time there was only one lithium-producing project in the country. In recent years, Argentina has experienced increased interest in lithium mining activities. In 2016, it was the most dynamic lithium producing country in the world, increasing production from 11 per cent to 16 per cent of the global market (Telam, 2017). There are now around 46 different projects of lithium extraction at different stages. However, little consideration has been given to the local impacts of lithium extraction considering human rights and the social and environmental sustainability of the projects. With this in mind, the current study seeks to contribute to an increased understanding of the potential and actual impacts of lithium extraction on local communities, providing insights from local perspectives to be considered in the wider discussion of sustainability, green technology and climate change. -

Crop production in a northern climate Pirjo Peltonen-Sainio, MTT Agrifood Research Finland, Plant Production, Jokioinen, Finland CONCEPTS AND ABBREVIATIONS USED IN THIS THEMATIC STUDY In this thematic study northern growing conditions represent the northernmost high latitude European countries (also referred to as the northern Baltic Sea region, Fennoscandia and Boreal regions) characterized mainly as the Boreal Environmental Zone (Metzger et al., 2005). Using this classification, Finland, Sweden, Norway and Estonia are well covered. In Norway, the Alpine North is, however, the dominant Environmental Zone, while in Sweden the Nemoral Zone is represented by the south of the country as for the western parts of Estonia (Metzger et al., 2005). According to the Köppen-Trewartha climate classification, these northern regions include the subarctic continental (taiga), subarctic oceanic (needle- leaf forest) and temperate continental (needle-leaf and deciduous tall broadleaf forest) zones and climates (de Castro et al., 2007). Northern growing conditions are generally considered to be less favourable areas (LFAs) in the European Union (EU) with regional cropland areas typically ranging from 0 to 25 percent of total land area (Rounsevell et al., 2005). Adaptation is the process of adjustment to actual or expected climate and its effects, in order to moderate harm or exploit beneficial opportunities (IPCC, 2012). Adaptive capacity is shaped by the interaction of environmental and social forces, which determine exposures and sensitivities, and by various social, cultural, political and economic forces. Adaptations are manifestations of adaptive capacity. Adaptive capacity is closely linked or synonymous with, for example, adaptability, coping ability and management capacity (Smit and Wandel, 2006).
