First Fleet Marine James Lee ©Cathy Dunn and Glen Lambert September 2017 James Lee was a marine private in the 35th Portsmouth Company, enlisted in the NSW Marines, and arrived in NSW aboard Scarborough in Jan 1788. James was a private, assigned to Captain Campbell's Company of the Port Jackson garrison. In Nov 1788 his name appears on the muster roll of the Marine Garrison for NSW Settlement.1 Some family historians believe that James Lee arrived on Norfolk Island aboard the Golden Grove in October 1788; however, records show that this is simply not the case.2 James Lee is also said to have been sent to Norfolk Island also on 9 April 1792, to superintend the growing of flax aboard the Pitt, which arrived on Norfolk Island from Port Jackson on 23 April 1792, sailing for Bengal on 7 May 1792. The Pitt actually left Sydney on 7 April 1792, she took no marines to Norfolk Island in April 1792, on board were 52 male and 5 female convicts and 9 males and one female stowaway convict. One asks the question was James Lee ever on Norfolk Island where he cohabited with Sarah Smith (1st) fathering children – William and Maria Smith – Lee. This has resulted in the “Lee Family Saga”. There was no land granted to a James Lee on Norfolk Island.3 James Lee is not listed in any of the Kings List 1800/1802, but most marines do not feature in these lists.4 More notably, James Lee is not listed in the Norfolk Island Victualling book 1792-1796, which is quite a comprehensive record of inhabitants on Norfolk Island. -

MEDWAY 25A Norman Street, New Plymouth, New Zealand [email protected] Abstract The population of Providence petrels (Pterodroma solandri) that nested on Norfolk Island at the time of 1st European settlement of that island in 1788 was probably > 1 million pairs. Available evidence indicates that Europeans harvested many more Providence petrels in the years immediately after settlement than previously believed. About 1,000,000 Providence petrels, adults and young, were harvested in the 4 breeding seasons from 1790 to 1793 alone. Despite these enormous losses, many Providence petrels were apparently still nesting on Norfolk Island in 1795 when they are last mentioned in documents from the island. However, any breeding population that may have survived there until 1814 when Norfolk Island was abandoned temporarily was probably exterminated by the combined activities of introduced cats and pigs which had become very numerous by the time the island was re-occupied in 1825. The groundwork was done by our Fellowship Director, They are Cheryl Turner and Simon Francis. Paul Gooding, as Chapter Establishment Officer, who attended the launch along with Jon and Karys Fearon, President and Chapter Liaison Officer. Paul gave special thanks to sisters Pam Cristiano and Adrienne Ellis who arranged the venue and served a delicious morning tea. This was appreciated by all, especially those who had come from afar such as Bendigo and further afield. December 311928 Vol. X, pp. 99–106 PROCEEDINGS OF THE NEW ENGLAND ZOÖLOGICAL CLUB A NEW RAIL AND A NEW DOVE FROM MICRONESIA BY JAMES LEE PETERS AND LUDLOW GRISCOM The two birds described in this paper have been in alcohol, happily clean alcohol, in the collections of the Museum of Comparative Zoology for many years. One of the specimens, the pigeon, was taken by the Reverend B.G. Snow, a famous member of the Micronesian Mission, resident at Ebon, one of the southern islands of the Marshall group. It probably was taken in the late fifties or early sixties of the last century, but did not reach the Museum until it was brought back by the Reverend R.W. Wood in 1876. The Rail is one of a great host of specimens taken by that extraordinary genius, Andrew Garrett. For years Garrett, under the patronage of Mr. James M. Barnard of Boston, scoured the islands of the central Pacific to send specimens of natural history to Mr. Barnard’s friend, Louis Agassiz. Gar rett visited the Marquesas, the Society Islands, the Fijis, and spent a long time on the various islands of the Hawaiian group. Many hundreds of his painstaking sketches, showing life colors of the fish and marine invertebrates which he sent to the Museum, are still in its files. In 1859 Garrett determined to visit the Gilbert Islands, or Kingsmill Islands as they were then called, and the rail was procured on this journey. It bore no locality beyond the words P.N. E. Rich people could provide their children with food, nice clothes, a warm house and an education. While some people were rich, others were poor. Poor people had no money and no food. They had to work as servants for the rich. Poor children did not attend school. When machines were invented, many people lost their jobs because workers were no longer needed. Health conditions during the 1700s were very poor. There was no clean water due to the pollution from factories. Manure from horses attracted flies, which spread diseases. A lack of medical care meant many people died from these diseases. Life in Britain During the 1700s • The overcrowded city streets were not a nice place to be during the 1700s. High levels of poverty resulted in a lot of crime. • Harsh punishments were put in place to try to stop the crime. People were convicted for crimes as small as stealing bread. Soon, the prisons became overcrowded with convicts. • One of the most common punishments was transportation to another country. Until 1782, Britain sent their convicts to America. After the War of Independence in 1783, America refused to take Britain’s convicts. -

Baker In 1616 Dutch explorers landed on the north and west coast of Australia, and followed this up with Tasman's discovery of Tasmania and New Zealand, and fuller exploration of the large landmass of 'New Holland'. The Dutch did not follow up the promise and the challenge, which was taken over in the eighteenth century by the British, the first settlers. The great name here was that of James Cook (1728-1779), son of an agricultural labourer, of whom the Dictionary of National Biography states, 'his truest and best memorial is the map of the Pacific'. During three voyages round the world, 1768-71, 1772-75, 1776-80, he traversed the whole of the southern hemisphere, and a large part of it he mapped for the first time. To him more than to anyone we owe the fact that we are here in New Zealand-which he visited on all three voyages—speaking the English language. That this Pacific area is mainly Christian, and mainly Protestant, is again, owing mainly to one man, I believe, and that one man, John Wesley. On the heels of the explorer-scientists with their thirst for new knowledge and the merchant-adventurers with their eager quest for new markets came the missionaries with their yearning for human betterment. Sometimes these have been individuals like Ignatius Loyola (1495- 1556), Thomas Coke (1747-1814), and William Carey (1761-1834). -

All other letters are rare before the late 20th century, except in foreign names. A B E I K M N NG O R T U W • The letter T is very common, especially at the beginning of names. The uppercase cursive T can sometimes be confused with the unlikely P or S. Lower-case t is often written with the cross-bar shifted right, detached from the vertical stroke. • Lower-case g is the only letter with a down-stroke. It exists only in the combination ng (equivalent to ñ). • The cursive lower-case n and u are about equally common and are not easily distinguished; lower-case n and r are more distinguishable. A MARITIME HISTORY OF THE PORT OF WHITBY, 1700-1914 - Submitted for the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy in the University of London STEPHANIE KAREN JONES UNIVERSITY COLLEGE LONDON 1982 2 A MARITIME HISTORY OF THE PORT OF WHITBY, 1700-1914 ABSTRACT This study attempts to contribute to the history of merchant shipping in a manner suggested by Ralph Davis, that 'the writing of substantial histories of the ports' was a neglected, but important, part of the subject of British maritime history. Rspects of the shipping industry of the port of Whitby fall into three broad categories: the ships of Whitby, built there and owned there; the trades in which these vessels were employed; and the port itself, its harbour facilities and maritime community. The origins of Whitby shipbuilding are seen in the context of the rise to prominence of the ports of the North East coast, and an attempt is made to quantify the shipping owned at Whitby before the beginning of statutory registration of vessels in 1786. A consideration of the decline of the building and owning of sailing ships at Whitby is followed by an analysis of the rise of steamshipping at the port. The nature of investment in shipping at Whitby is compared with features of shipowning at other English ports. An introductory survey of the employ- ment of Whitby-owned vessels, both sail and steam, precedes a study of Whitby ships in the coal trade, illustrated with examples of voyage accounts of Whitby colliers. The Northern Whale Fishery offered further opportunities for profit, and may be contrasted with the inshore and off - shore fishery from Whitby itself. -

Library of Congress Subject Headings for the Pacific Islands First compiled by Nancy Sack and Gwen Sinclair Updated by Nancy Sack Current to January 2020 Library of Congress Subject Headings for the Pacific Islands Background An inquiry from a librarian in Micronesia about how to identify subject headings for the Pacific islands highlighted the need for a list of authorized Library of Congress subject headings that are uniquely relevant to the Pacific islands or that are important to the social, economic, or cultural life of the islands. We reasoned that compiling all of the existing subject headings would reveal the extent to which additional subjects may need to be established or updated and we wish to encourage librarians in the Pacific area to contribute new and changed subject headings through the Hawai‘i/Pacific subject headings funnel, coordinated at the University of Hawai‘i at Mānoa.. We captured headings developed for the Pacific, including those for ethnic groups, World War II battles, languages, literatures, place names, traditional religions, etc. Headings for subjects important to the politics, economy, social life, and culture of the Pacific region, such as agricultural products and cultural sites, were also included. Scope Topics related to Australia, New Zealand, and Hawai‘i would predominate in our compilation had they been included. Accordingly, we focused on the Pacific islands in Melanesia, Micronesia, and Polynesia (excluding Hawai‘i and New Zealand). Island groups in other parts of the Pacific were also excluded. References to broader or related terms having no connection with the Pacific were not included. Overview This compilation is modeled on similar publications such as Music Subject Headings: Compiled from Library of Congress Subject Headings and Library of Congress Subject Headings in Jewish Studies.
