  • Decoding Stem/Steam the Toy Association Stem/Steam Strategic Leadership Committee Report
DECODING STEM/STEAM THE TOY ASSOCIATION STEM/STEAM STRATEGIC LEADERSHIP COMMITTEE REPORT The Toy Association STEM/STEAM Strategic Leadership Committee Findings 1 INTRODUCTION While the terms STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering & Mathematics), and more recently STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts & Mathematics), have been growing in popularity, there is massive confusion when it comes to defining what exactly they mean. Specifically, a lot of toys nowadays are labeled as STEM/STEAM, yet there is no universally accepted system or even a uniform understanding of what this definition implies. The Toy Association has committed to bringing more clarity to the STEM/STEAM concept, especially as it relates to toys and play. The first step was to assemble a committee of experts in the fields of science, technology, engineering, and math—as well as education—to address the growing needs of both our membership and the public to better understand the STEM/STEAM movement. They are thought leaders, researchers, educators, authors, and beyond. This report is the first in a series of communications that The Toy Association STEM/STEAM Strategic Leadership Committee will share with the following constituents: • General public, to help everyone understand the meaning of STEM/STEAM • Parents, to help them make better toy selections for their children • Teachers, to help inspire young minds about STEM/STEAM subjects • Toy manufacturers, to help develop better STEM/STEAM products We believe that this exercise will provide the above constituents with the information and support they need to encourage children to use toys and play to develop intrinsic motivation to explore STEAM concepts, which could ultimately grow into a desire to pursue formal studies or a career in STEM/STEAM.

Barbie: The Real Enemy? By: Shelby Wolfinger Wolfinger 1 Barbie: The Real Enemy? Introduction Barbie has been the subject of many debates about body image dissatisfaction and the negative impacts this doll has on adolescent children; my thesis will expand upon this and explore the possibility that the Barbie Doll can create long lasting effects on women throughout their adulthood. This argument examines the scholarships which suggests that Barbie has negative effects on young children. I then conduct primary research in the form of detailed surveys with women aged twenty-one and over. Using this mixed methods approach, I determine whether or not the problems created by Barbie among young children will affect women in their teenaged years and into adulthood. I am specifically looking at cross-sections within the lives of various women to see the perception of body image. By obtaining and analyzing this data, I form the conclusion that body image and its connection to early childhood play and engagement with the Barbie Doll does not create a body dissatisfaction among adults.

  • Ruth Handler Watched Her Daughter Barbara at Play with Paper Dolls, and Noticed That She Often Enjoyed Giving Them Adult Roles
Ruth Handler watched her daughter Barbara at play with paper dolls, and noticed that she often enjoyed giving them adult roles. At the time, most children's toy dolls were representations of infants. Realizing that there could be a gap in the market, Handler suggested the idea of an adult- bodied doll to her husband Elliot, a co-founder of the Mattel toy company. He was unenthusiastic about the idea, and so were Mattel's directors. During a trip to Europe in 1956 with her children Barbara and Kenneth, Ruth Handler came across a German toy doll called Bild Lilli. The Lilli doll was first sold in Germany in 1955, and although it was initially sold to adults, it became popular with children who enjoyed dressing her up in outfits that were available separately. The adult-figured Lilli doll was exactly what Handler had in mind, so she purchased three of them. She gave one to her daughter and took the others back to Mattel. Upon her return to the United States, Handler reworked the design of the doll and the doll was given a new name, Barbie, after Handler's daughter Barbara. The doll made its debut at the American International Toy Fair in New York on March 9, 1959. This date is also used as Barbie's official birthday. The first Barbie doll wore a black and white zebra striped swimsuit and signature topknot ponytail, and was available as either a blonde or brunette. The doll was marketed as a "Teen-age Fashion Model." The first Barbie dolls were manufactured in Japan, with their clothes hand- stitched by Japanese homeworkers.

  • The Barbie Phenomenon in Japan
THE BARBIE PHENOMENON IN JAPAN Arisa Shibagaki A Thesis Submitted to the Graduate College of Bowling Green State University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of MASTER OF ARTS August 2007 Committee: Marilyn F. Motz, Advisor Esther Clinton © 2007 Arisa Shibagaki All Rights Reserved iii ABSTRACT Marilyn F. Motz, Advisor This research examines the popularity of Barbie among young adult Japanese women as the “Barbie phenomenon” in Japan. By investigating the historical and cultural aspects of Japanese values of beauty, the author found that the phenomenon emerged from the combination of the values of kawaii (Japanese cuteness) and kakkoii (Japanese coolness). Kawaii is the traditional positive feeling for small and delicate things, and in modern society its meaning extends into popular characters and fashion. Kawaii fashion is usually considered to use lace, ribbon, and frilly materials and colors of pink, white, and pastels. On the other hand, the English- language word “cool” is usually translated into kakkoii (かっこいい), which means that people’s appearance is attractive, and its meaning also extends into people’s behavior and fashion in modern society. Kakkoii behavior is masculine and independent; the colors of black, blue, and khaki and plain materials are usually used in kakkoii fashion. In fact, “Kakkoii” is different from American “cool,” which is a word used for not only an attractive appearance but also individuality and a sense of belonging; however, the words “kakkoii” and “cool” are used without regard for such a difference in Japan. In women’s fashion magazines, both “kawaii” and “cool” are the common key words.
