Former SSP Young Leader Thinking Big for Inclusive Sport

A former RDSSP Young Leader, who is in remission from cancer, is hoping to be successful in applying for a cash grant to bring inclusive, disability sport to a local young people’s group. Todd Cloake has applied to 02’s Think Big campaign and is hoping to receive funding to set up a programme of activities focusing on Boccia and Wheelchair Basketball for Hartington Young People’s Activity Club (HYPAC).

Todd was a pupil at Hartington C of E Primary School, before studying at Queen Elizabeth’s in Ashbourne, where he took part in the RDSSP Young Sports Leader programme, gaining a Sports Leaders UK qualification.

The 23 year old, who is taking a break from studying for a degree in Coaching and Sports Development at Lincoln University while he recuperates, has got big plans for the inclusive sport programme and has enlisted the help of Special Olympics Boccia champion and fellow QEGS pupil, Beth Foster, from Ashbourne.

SSP Manager, Janice Price said: “I am so glad to hear a former SSP Young Leader is doing well and using his initiative to develop sporting opportunities for youngsters in rural Derbyshire. Todd was a shining example of a young leader and it’s great to hear he is now studying a leadership based degree.”

“I wish him all the very best of luck with his application to the funding pot, and really do hope he is successful. Sport isn’t just about physical activity – it’s also about teaching values of team-building, leadership, inclusivity and friendship – and Todd is doing just that.”

Applications for the 02 Think Big campaign close on Wednesday 11th March 2015. Working together to increase participation in PE and Sport

#TheseGirlsCan – RDSSP Young Leaders from Highfields School in Matlock star in film about role of women in sport

Students from Highfields School in Matlock, part of the RDSSP, feature in a new online film to highlight the range of sporting careers available to women and girls and to drive out sexism in sport.

Pupils got the chance to interview high profile female role models in the sports industry at an event in last year and a short film about their day was showcased at a special Careers in Sport evening at Highfields in November, held in conjunction with Women in Sport (formerly known as the Women’s Sport and Fitness Foundation).

The footage, which included students interviewing TV presenter, Charlie Webster and women with roles in organizations, including UK Sport and Virgin Active, has been merged with a video record of the evening, to create a YouTube film of their work alongside Women in Sport.

15 year-old Grace Pickford, who was involved in the project, said: “The best bit was going to London to interview so many women with different roles in the sport industry. We got to find out about their careers and how they got there. We want to thank Ms Allen [RDSSP School Sport Coordinator] for the opportunities. We wouldn’t have been able to do it if she hadn’t backed us. Getting involved has been the best thing we’ve done.”

Highfields PE Teacher and SSP School Sport Coordinator, Jayne Allen, said: “The film launch has given the girls excitement. They’ve grown so much in confidence as role models throughout this project. I hope they’ll go back into their year groups and be able to share their passion and interest for Women in Sport with others.”

The 38 minute video of the evening is available to see online here (scroll to 5:50 to see short video of the girls at Women In Sport Conference in London): www.youtube.com/watch?v=TjMfTvETj1w&feature=youtu.be

Women in Adventure Students from to rub shoulders with adventure sports elite

Pupils at Anthony Gell School in , part of the SSP, are preparing to take part in this year’s Sheffield Adventure Film Festival (ShAFF). The festival showcases more than a hundred of the world’s best adventure, extreme sports and travel films in 30 different themed sessions on seven big screens and this year is celebrating its 10th birthday.

Organisers have this year put a big emphasis on women in front of and behind the camera in adventure films and will be launching the Women In Adventure Network.

The Anthony Gell students are set to swap module handbooks and exam revision for the day and spend time meeting and interviewing some top female adventure sporting stars including climber, Mina Leslie-Wujastyk, directors, Brenda Piekarski and Jen Randall and elite runner, Nikki Kimball.

We’ll keep you updated with how they get on in the next newsletter.

Middleton students aiming high – James Bates reports...

Students at Middleton Community Primary School are developing their basketball skills.

18 year old James explains: “Youngsters have limited space to practice their basketball skills so they’ve had the opportunity to learn tactics and deepen their knowledge of the rules of the game. A basketball hoop has been put up in the playground so students have had the opportunity to practice during break and lunch.”

Year 6 student, Aelish said: “I like basketball because it’s a great way to socialise and I like inclusiveness of the sport.”

Fellow pupil, Luke said: “I want to gain agility, fitness and a deeper knowledge of the sport itself.”

Turnditch pupils and staff welcome extra PE sessions

Pupils at Turnditch C of E Primary School are reaping the benefits of additional PE sessions thanks their Young Sports Apprentice. The 30 minute lessons aim to improve core skills including throwing and catching, balance, control, agility, accuracy, hand eye coordination and overall fitness.

Head Teacher, John Bolton said: “James’ input is delivered sensitively and professionally and has already begun to demonstrate impact. The children he works with have developed in key areas of hand eye co-ordination, agility, balance and overall fitness.”

Swimming is splashing success in Wirksworth – Sam May reports...

Wirksworth Infant School pupils in Years 1 and 2 have swimming lessons at the town’s pool each week, funded in part by parents and money from Sport Premium Funding.

The one to two hour sessions are supported by SSP Young Sports Apprentice, Sam May, who is based at the school as part of his role.

The lessons are aimed at improving student’s basic swimming skills including technique and overall fitness, as well as boosting youngsters confidence to swim with little or no assistance.

Year 1 and 2 Class PE Co-ordinator, Heather Marriott said: “We believe it is important for every child to have the opportunity to swim. Some children have lessons outside of school but for a lot of them, this is their only opportunity to learn. As well as the enjoyment that the children gain from their lessons, we also appreciate that this can be an essential life skill.”

To find out more about the possibilities of an SSP Young Sports Apprentice getting involved in sporting events and activities at your school, a FREE Sports Apprentice Briefing with Afternoon Tea is taking place at Hassop Hall on Friday 20th March from 1.30 to 3.00pm. Balancing Act – Huge success of our Early Rider/ Bikeability programmes

Early Rider This programme is designed to improve children’s skills including balance and coordination whilst increasing confidence in riding bikes.

Teacher at Bakewell C of E Infant School, Natalie Bradshaw said: “We really enjoyed our training. It helped us balance and also manoeuvre a bike successfully, as well as being lots of fun!”

Level 1 Bikeability Training for Years 3 and 4 The response to our offer of Level 1 training for pupils in Years 3 and 4 has been overwhelming. We are now fully booked until Easter and for the time being we will have to say no to any additional requests. However, this may be something we plan into the diary again at a later date, but we will let you know if and when this happens. Do please keep talking to us about the activities you want, this way we can train staff up in advance and be prepared for your bookings.

To find out more about both of these programmes and register your interest, email Eliot on [email protected]

Level 2 Bikeability Training for Year 6 Pupils Unsurprisingly, Bikeability is one of our most popular courses. It ticks every box for developing cycling skills, road and traffic awareness, helping children to get physically active whilst developing self-confidence and esteem.

This keen interest is reflected nationally, so much so that all SSP quotas have been cut by 10% for the next financial year, such is the demand for training. Through your annual SSP affiliation, schools are entitled to a maximum of 20 FREE places. In order to ensure all schools can access our training this is a heads up that the SSP will now give larger schools the option to pay for the training of more than 20 individuals. This is still outstanding value for money as 20 places equates to £800 worth of training.

If you haven’t booked your training yet for this academic year, please contact your training provider as soon as possible. Prime summertime slots are going quickly!

Meanwhile... Derbyshire School Cycling is moving up a gear

School students across Derbyshire are set to benefit from more cycling activities, events and competitions as the RDSSP welcomes new team member, Ruth Taylor.

Ruth is working to boost cycling participation levels in RDSSP member infant, junior and secondary schools including in the Derbyshire Dales and Hope Valley.

The 37 year-old says: “I am looking forward to bringing cycling to more people and getting youngsters involved. It’ll be so good to see students develop and their progression in sport and keeping track of how they’re doing over a period of time.”

“I think cycling is a life-skill, it’s like swimming. Every child should know how to cycle; it’s something you can use forever. Some people may not use it a lot, but it’s that idea that you’ve always got a mode of transport if you can ride a bike. It’ll help with coordination, balance and it gives great independence.”

Ruth will be working for one day a week with the RDSSP and a further two days every week with Derbyshire Dales District Council.
