Todd Cloake has applied to 02’s Think Big campaign and is hoping to receive funding to set up a programme of activities focusing on Boccia and Wheelchair Basketball for Hartington Young People’s Activity Club (HYPAC). Todd was a pupil at Hartington C of E Primary School, before studying at Queen Elizabeth’s Grammar School in Ashbourne, where he took part in the RDSSP Young Sports Leader programme, gaining a Sports Leaders UK qualification. The 23 year old, who is taking a break from studying for a degree in Coaching and Sports Development at Lincoln University while he recuperates, has got big plans for the inclusive sport programme and has enlisted the help of Special Olympics Boccia champion and fellow QEGS pupil, Beth Foster, from Ashbourne. SSP Manager, Janice Price said: “I am so glad to hear a former SSP Young Leader is doing well and using his initiative to develop sporting opportunities for youngsters in rural Derbyshire. Todd was a shining example of a young leader and it’s great to hear he is now studying a leadership based degree.” “I wish him all the very best of luck with his application to the funding pot, and really do hope he is successful. Sport isn’t just about physical activity – it’s also about teaching values of team-building, leadership, inclusivity and friendship – and Todd is doing just that.” Applications for the 02 Think Big campaign close on Wednesday 11th March 2015. Working together to increase participation in PE and Sport with Anthony Gell, Highfields, Hope Valley College, Lady Manners & Queen Elizabeth’s Grammar #TheseGirlsCan – RDSSP Young Leaders from Highfields School in Matlock star in film about role of women in sport Students from Highfields School in Matlock, part of the RDSSP, feature in a new online film to highlight the range of sporting careers available to women and girls and to drive out sexism in sport. Pupils got the chance to interview high profile female role models in the sports industry at an event in London last year and a short film about their day was showcased at a special Careers in Sport evening at Highfields in November, held in conjunction with Women in Sport (formerly known as the Women’s Sport and Fitness Foundation). The footage, which included students interviewing TV presenter, Charlie Webster and women with roles in organizations, including UK Sport and Virgin Active, has been merged with a video record of the evening, to create a YouTube film of their work alongside Women in Sport. 15 year-old Grace Pickford, who was involved in the project, said: “The best bit was going to London to interview so many women with different roles in the sport industry. We got to find out about their careers and how they got there. We want to thank Ms Allen [RDSSP School Sport Coordinator] for the opportunities. We wouldn’t have been able to do it if she hadn’t backed us. Getting involved has been the best thing we’ve done.” Highfields PE Teacher and SSP School Sport Coordinator, Jayne Allen, said: “The film launch has given the girls excitement. They’ve grown so much in confidence as role models throughout this project. I hope they’ll go back into their year groups and be able to share their passion and interest for Women in Sport with others.” The 38 minute video of the evening is available to see online here (scroll to 5:50 to see short video of the girls at Women In Sport Conference in London): www.youtube.com/watch?v=TjMfTvETj1w&feature=youtu.be Women in Adventure Students from Anthony Gell School to rub shoulders with adventure sports elite Pupils at Anthony Gell School in Wirksworth, part of the SSP, are preparing to take part in this year’s Sheffield Adventure Film Festival (ShAFF). The festival showcases more than a hundred of the world’s best adventure, extreme sports and travel films in 30 different themed sessions on seven big screens and this year is celebrating its 10th birthday. Organisers have this year put a big emphasis on women in front of and behind the camera in adventure films and will be launching the Women In Adventure Network. The Anthony Gell students are set to swap module handbooks and exam revision for the day and spend time meeting and interviewing some top female adventure sporting stars including climber, Mina Leslie-Wujastyk, directors, Brenda Piekarski and Jen Randall and elite runner, Nikki Kimball. We’ll keep you updated with how they get on in the next newsletter. Students at Middleton Community Primary School are developing their basketball skills. 18 year old James explains: “Youngsters have limited space to practice their basketball skills so they’ve had the opportunity to learn tactics and deepen their knowledge of the rules of the game. A basketball hoop has been put up in the playground so students have had the opportunity to practice during break and lunch.” Year 6 student, Aelish said: “I like basketball because it’s a great way to socialise and I like inclusiveness of the sport.” Fellow pupil, Luke said: “I want to gain agility, fitness and a deeper knowledge of the sport itself.” Turnditch pupils and staff welcome extra PE sessions Pupils at Turnditch C of E Primary School are reaping the benefits of additional PE sessions thanks their Young Sports Apprentice. The 30 minute lessons aim to improve core skills including throwing and catching, balance, control, agility, accuracy, hand eye coordination and overall fitness. Head Teacher, John Bolton said: “James’ input is delivered sensitively and professionally and has already begun to demonstrate impact. The children he works with have developed in key areas of hand eye co-ordination, agility, balance and overall fitness.” Swimming is splashing success in Wirksworth – Sam May reports... Wirksworth Infant School pupils in Years 1 and 2 have swimming lessons at the town’s pool each week, funded in part by parents and money from Sport Premium Funding. The one to two hour sessions are supported by SSP Young Sports Apprentice, Sam May, who is based at the school as part of his role. The lessons are aimed at improving student’s basic swimming skills including technique and overall fitness, as well as boosting youngsters confidence to swim with little or no assistance. Year 1 and 2 Class PE Co-ordinator, Heather Marriott said: “We believe it is important for every child to have the opportunity to swim. Some children have lessons outside of school but for a lot of them, this is their only opportunity to learn. As well as the enjoyment that the children gain from their lessons, we also appreciate that this can be an essential life skill.” To find out more about the possibilities of an SSP Young Sports Apprentice getting involved in sporting events and activities at your school, a FREE Sports Apprentice Briefing with Afternoon Tea is taking place at Hassop Hall on Friday 20th March from 1.30 to 3.00pm.
