SUMMARY ........................................................................................................ 223 I. GİRİŞ I.1 Eskiçağ’da Biliciliğe Genel Bakış Eskiçağ toplumları evrende gerçekleşen ve kendi bilgi sınırlarını aşan her türlü doğa olayını, işlenen bir suça karşı tanrıların gönderdikleri ceza olarak görmüşlerdir.

THE PONTIFICAL LAW OF THE ROMAN REPUBLIC by MICHAEL JOSEPH JOHNSON A Dissertation submitted to the Graduate School-New Brunswick Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy Graduate Program in Classics written under the direct of T. Corey Brennan and approved by ____________________________ ____________________________ ____________________________ ____________________________ New Brunswick, New Jersey October, 2007 ABSTRACT OF THE DISSERTATION The Pontifical Law of the Roman Republic by MICHAEL JOSEPH JOHNSON Dissertation Director: T. Corey Brennan This dissertation investigates the guiding principle of arguably the most important religious authority in ancient Rome, the pontifical college. Chapter One introduces the subject and discusses the hypothesis the dissertation will advance. Chapter Two examines the place of the college within Roman law and religion, giving particular attention to disproving several widely held notions about the relationship of the pontifical law to the civil and sacral law. Chapter Three offers the first detailed examination of the duties of the pontifical college as a collective body. I spend the bulk of the chapter analyzing two of the three collegiate duties I identify: the issuing of documents known as decrees and responses and the supervision of the Vestal Virgins. I analyze all decrees and responses from the point of view their content, treating first those that concern dedications, then those on the calendar, and finally those on vows. In doing so my goal is to understand the reasoning behind the decree and the major theological doctrines underpinning it. In documenting the pontifical supervision of Vestal Virgins I focus on the college's actions towards a Vestal accused of losing her chastity.

Lays of Acient Rome Lays of Ancient Rome By Thomas Babbington Macaulay 1 Lays of Acient Rome Preface Horatius The Lay The Battle of the Lake Regillus The Lay Virginia The Lay The Prophecy of Capys The Lay That what i called the hitory of the Kings and early Consuls of Rome is to a great extent fabulus, few scholars have, since the ti of Beaufort, ventured to deny. It is certain that, more than three hundred and sixty years after the date ordinarily assigned for the foundatio of the city, the public records were, with scarcely an exception, destroyed by the Gauls. It is certain that the oldest annals of the coonwealth were compiled mre than a century and a half after th destruction of the records. It is certain, therefore, that the great Latin writers of the Augustan age did not possss those materials, without which a trustworthy account of the infancy of the republic could not possibly be framed. Those writers own, indeed, that the chronicles to which they had access were filled with battles that were never fought, and Consuls that were never inaugurated; and we have abundant proof that, in these chronicles, events of the greatest importance, suc as the issue of the war with Porsa and the issue of the war with Brennus, were grossly misrepresented. Under thes circumstances a wise man will look with great suspicio on the lged whi has com do to us. He will perhaps be inclined to regard th princes who are said to have founded the civil and religious institutions of Rom, the sons of Mars, and the husband of Egeria, as mere mythgial persage, of the same class with Persus and Ixion.

  • Forbidden to Enter the Ara Maxima: Dogs and Flies, Or Dogflies?*)
FORBIDDEN TO ENTER THE ARA MAXIMA: DOGS AND FLIES, OR DOGFLIES?*) by CHRISTOPHER MICHAEL MCDONOUGH Of the numerous oddities connected with the worship of Hercules at the Ara Maxima, surely the strangest is the exclusion of ies and dogs. Furthermore, Hercules likewise set up an altar to his own godhood, an altar called the Greatest by the ponti Vs, after he discovered from Nicostrate ...that he was immortal. The enclosed shrine—within which he taught the Potitii the rites of worship after the bull-sacri ce— is in the Forum Boarium, in which the signs of both his banquet and his majesty reside. For, in a divine manner, it may be entered there neither by ies or dogs. Plutarch, on the other hand,—apparently drawing on Varro,—men- tions only an exclusion of dogs, asking ( RQ 90 = Mor. 285 E-F), DiŒ tÛ tÒ „HrakleÝ ginom¡ nhw yusÛaw llon oéd¡ na yeÇn ônom‹zousin oéd¢ faÛnetai kævn ¤ntòw tÇn peribñlvn , Éw B‹rrvn ßstñrhken ;2) Why is no other god mentioned during the sacri ce to Hercules? And why is it that no dog is seen within his enclosures, as Varro records? *) A version of this paper was read at the one hundred and twenty-eighth meet- ing of the American Philological Association in Washington, D.C., December 1992.

  • 510To 275B.C
EARLY REPUBLIC 510 TO 275 B.C. DEFEAT OF TARQUIN SUPERBUS TO UNIFICATION OF ITALY ERA SUMMARY – EARLY REPUBLIC The early years of the republic lasted from the overthrow of Tarquin Superbus to the conquest of southern Italy in 275 B.C. During this time, Rome fought wars against the Gauls, Etruscans, Latins, and Samnites, eventually bringing all of Italy, from northern Tuscany to the Grecian dominated southern coast, into an alliance with Rome. It is this period that produced many of Rome's most romantic legends and hero stories. During this time the Republican virtues of courage, patriotism, and piety were at their peak, and Rome was still largely unaffected by its exposure to eastern decadence and the corruptions of wealth. The most important historian of this era, is Livy, and most of his writings pertaining to this period still exist. Rome's Republican government was composed of a group of three hundred senators. Each year, two consuls were selected, usually from among the senators, to administer the state and lead the army in times of war. By selecting two consuls and limiting their service to a single year, the Romans hoped to avoid the emergence of a single powerful tyrant. By the beginning of the Republican era Rome was already the foremost city in the Latin-speaking region around the Tiber river, but it had not yet established dominance over its neighbors: the Etruscans, Volscians, and Aequilians. Coriolanus and Cincinnatus were both heroes of early wars against these enemies during the first hundred years of the republic. The second century produced Camillus, an even greater hero.

PREFACE It has been the aim of this revision to preserve the general characteristics of the old edition while making such changes as newly accessible material and new methods of instruction have made desirable, — such changes as the original editors would have been likely to make if they had lived to carry through the work of revision. In the introduction a few new paragraphs have been incor¬ porated, and some alterations made in the old text. In the notes some simple grammatical explanations and refer¬ ences, and some translations of easy words and phrases, have been omitted, a few notes have been altered or expanded, and a considerable number of new notes added, though it has been the aim not to mar the simplicity characteristic of the old edi¬ tion by elaborate annotation. The notes on persons, except such parts of them as seemed necessary for the understanding of the text to which they apply, have been taken out of the main body of the notes and put together in an alphabetical index at the end of the book.

CENSURAE LIBRORUM 131 Eos XCV 2008 ISSN 0012-7825 IN THE QUEST FOR “ROMAN FACTS”: LINDERSKI’S RQ II Jerzy Linderski, Roman Questions II. Selected Papers, Stuttgart: Franz Steiner Verlag, 2007 (Heidelberger Althistorische Beiträge und Epigraphische Studien [HABES], Bd. 44), XI, 726 pp., ISBN 987-3-515-08134-4. It is a formidable, even intimidating, task to write a review of a collection of 50 papers and a score of other items (with additions and corrections of earlier works) in a volume of 726 pages, and one not to be undertaken lightly. That is certainly the case before the book is opened, and fears may well often turn out to be justified, but after reading the first page or two any reader will feel that s/he is going to find an alluring path through it. That is due in the first place to the excellence of the writing throughout the volume (one article is in German, one in Latin) from an author whose native language is not English and who at some time had to learn it. (Perhaps that helped: we live in times when bare correctness cannot be taken for granted among native speakers, even in works offered by the best-known publishing houses, when clarity is sometimes avoided and elegance is taken for affectation.) His mastery of language helps in part to explain how Linderski [= L.] carries his reader on with him, a reader eager to reach conclusions that s/he is confident will be revealing – but relishing the byways as s/he goes. When the conclusion of one paper is reached s/he turns the page, eagerly again, to explore the next.

In date, it spans the period from 2 BC to the third century AD. Spatially, the documents derive from 12 provinces ( Achaia, Africa, Asia, Baetica, Cilicia, Creta et Cyrene, Dalmatia, Iudaea, Lusitania, Macedonia, Moesia and Syria ), plus Italy. The presentation of each includes a text, English translation, bibliography and commentary. Analytical chapters expand upon recent published work by G. Burton and B. Campbell. Terminological analysis permits classification of epigraphic and literary evidence into five categories: boundary disputes, restoration of public and sacred lands, other land disputes, the assignment of boundaries and other authoritative demarcations involving Roman officials. The analysis also provides a more focused definition of several Latin and Greek words that indicate the delivery of a verdict by a Roman official ( decretum, sententia, iudicium, ἀποφάσις, κρίσις, ἐπικρίμα ).
