West Side Wine Club May 2011 President’s Musings ! ! April showers bring…. May showers. Our cool spring continues, although the grapevines have budded, the next stumbling block is blossoming. Once blossoming has occurred, the rate of ripening is has little room for variation. A grape, after all, can only ripen so fast. But there are factors at work that do effect ripening. In a perfect year, we would have 80 degree days all day, never over- but Scheduled Meetings rarely under. January 19, 2011 During this time period, we watch carefully hoping to purchase good grapes. This year has been a Crush Talk struggle so far. Viticulturists in eastern Washington have been hesitant to commit so far. The freeze January 22, 2011 last fall has wine makers running around trying to find out how much they have and if they can Holiday Party/Awards replace any shortfalls. This means that when the growers tells us what’s available, we will need to Gala jump on our orders to insure we can get a variety of grapes. Some grapes will not be a problem. Others will be difficult to purchase. Sammy has been in discussions with growers and will let us know February 16, 2011 when he knows more. Red Bordeaux Tasting But this is also a time to think about purchasing barrels. May15th is the deadline for purchasing February 27, 2011 barrels at Bouchard cooperages at a discount and with no shipping cost. They make Damy, Vicard, Argyle Winery Tour Billon and Cadus barrels. All their barrels are quite good, although each provides different component to a wine. -

DOMAINE DUMIEN-SERRETTE Cornas 'Henri'
Wine Facts DOMAINE DUMIEN-SERRETTE Cornas ‘Henri’ The history of Syrah on Cornas’ steeply graded slopes once went like this: generations-old families cherished the few ancient vines they had, usually selling their precious crop to the larger producers—Delas, Jaboulet, Chapoutier—upriver. Winemaker Nicholas Serrette’s father, Gilbert, did this for years until in the early 1980s, the family decided it was long time to try crafting a Cornas that best reflected their soils and their centuries of toil. (The Dumien family has lived and worked in Cornas since 1515.) Theirs is true Cornas—deeply colored, structured, profound. Knocking on the family’s weather-beaten cellar door, steps from the village center, reveals a practice that has not changed with time. Nicolas treads his organically raised grapes by foot, and presses them in an old-fashioned basket press: tradition is alive and well at Dumien-Serrette. WINERY: Domaine Dumien-Serrette WINEMAKERS: Nicholas Serrette ESTABLISHED: 1983 REGION: FRANCE • Northern Rhône • Cornas APPELLATION: Cornas AOC BLEND: 100% Syrah VINEYARDS: A selection of the estate’s oldest vines from vineyard ‘Patou,’ facing southeast. Soils combine decomposed granite with sand. AGE OF VINES: 70-100 years WINEMAKING: Hand-harvested. Fermented full cluster on indigenous yeasts in tank; after fermenting dry (and before malolactic conversion), wine is placed in one-year French oak barrels for six months. Then aged in older French oak barrels for 20 months. Bottled unfined and unfiltered. TASTING IMPRESSIONS: Aromas of black cherries, boysenberries, light licorice, earth. Structured, earthy, profoundly deep. Long finish. PAIRING SUGGESTIONS: Grilled pork sausages; game meat in red wine sauce; roast lamb NOTES: ’Henri’ is a tribute to the winemaker’s grandfather who would have turned 100 years old in 2013, the first vintage of this cuvée. -
4Th June 2017 Domaine Auguste Clape
Prices valid from 23rd May - 4th June 2017 Domaine Auguste Clape Now in his eighties, Auguste Clape is one of the few remaining old-school proponents of French winemaking, a pioneering and unassuming genius who falls almost effortlessly into the category of ‘great.’ In reality, of course, there has been much effort involved, the Clapes inserting themselves into the northern Rhône landscape in the early 1900’s to build their fortunes from next to nothing. Indeed, the Clape Syrahs from the Cornas appellation are among the most celebrated in France. Auguste paved the way there as the first to bottle his own wine. Today he works alongside son Pierre and grandson Olivier, farming a mere eight hectares of precipitous terraces by hand using traditional methods. Here, old vines are harvested as late as possible in a gamble with Nature to produce wines capable of tremendous longevity. The King, then, of Cornas, both because his wines are widely considered to be the best from this tiny appellation, and because he has at times fought single-handedly to maintain its integrity. Rhône 2016 En Primeur Offer
Rhône 2016 En Primeur Offer “I've now tasted 15 vintages in the region's cellars, and 2016 is hands down the best young vintage I have seen. I'm not alone in this thought, either.” James Molesworth, Wine Spectator “One of the most exciting Southern Rhône vintages of my lifetime.” Joe Czerwinski, RobertParker.com “It's the best vintage of my life.” Philippe Cambie, Southern Rhône winemaking consultant “This is one of the best vintages of the past few decades. Do not miss it.” Matt Walls, Decanter Magazine “It appears that the early hype is justified. These are wines that combine immense power (and sometimes alcohol levels) with elegance, perhaps most similar to the reds from 2010 or 1990. I didn’t do extensive tastings of them, because most of the wines haven’t been blended yet, but it will be a vintage to buy and cellar. ” Joe Czerwinski, RobertParker.com “Quality is incredibly high across all the regions. In fact, the biggest surprise was the consistency of the vintage, which is even more homogenous than 2015. This is truly an extraordinary vintage.” Jeb Dunnuck, JebDunnuck.com Contents Rhône 2016 Vintage Report 2 Rhône 2016 Table of Availability 3 Domaine Montirius 5 Domaine Martin 6 Cuvée du Vatican/Château Sixtine 7 Domaine de la Charbonnière 8 Château de Beaucastel/Famille Perrin 9 Domaine Roger Sabon 11 Clos des Papes 12 Domaine Saint Préfert 13 Michel Chapoutier 15 Ferraton Père et Fils 18 Stéphane Robert/Domaine du Tunnel 21 Domaine Yann Chave 23 E.
