In this paper we summarize the current information about killer whales and the live-capture procedures in the western North Pacific. We have described two killer whale ecotypes in the Russian Far East: fish-eating and mammal-eating ecotypes similar to resident and transient killer whales found in the Northeastern Pacific. Resident killer whales were encountered much more frequently than transients off eastern Kamchatka, near the Commander Islands and Kuril Islands. Transient killer whales prevailed in the western and northern Okhotsk Sea and off Sakhalin Island. Mitochondrial control region haplotypes were different for resident and transient killer whales. Genetic analysis of microsatellite DNA showed that resident and transient killer whales belong to reproductively isolated populations. Values of stable isotope δ15N were significantly higher in transients, indicating their higher trophic level.

Biological data 2.1 Distribution Huso dauricus is endemic to the Amur River system where it occurs from the delta to the upper reaches including the large tributaries and lakes (Berg, 1948; Nikol´skii,1956). Young individuals are reported to enter the Sea of Okhotsk and the Sea of Japan during the summer months reaching the north-eastern part of the Sakhalin Island, the northern part of the Tatar Strait, the coastal waters of Hokkaido Island and Honshu Island off Niigata (Kostarev and Tyurnin, 1970; Gritsenko and Kostyunin, 1979; Amaoka and Nakaya, 1975; Honma and Itano, 1994). The distribution range of the kaluga in the Amur is fragmented: a population living in the estuary and coastal zones can be distinguished from local populations in the lower Amur, middle Amur and Zeya-Bureya river system (Svirskii, 1971; Krykhtin and Svirskii, 1997a and 1997b). 2.2 Population 222 Krykhtin and Svirskii (1997a and 1997b) give an estimate of the size of the different populations using data of mass marking carried out at the end of the 1980s and calculated data (area method) based on irregular catches in the lower and middle Amur: the estuary population is relatively most abundant and contained almost 70,000 individuals older than one year at the end of the 1980s, of which approximately 5,000 (14%) with a weight exceeding 100 kg were potentially sexually mature.

Nivkh toponyms in the Amur-Sakhalin region of the Russian Far East. Altai Hakpo 30. 167–204. The Altaic Society of Korea. This paper offers a survey of the indigenous toponymy of a limited geographical region covering the lower course of the river Amur and the island of Sakhalin in the Russian Far East. Place names of this region come from both indigenous and colonial languages and reveal several historical layers. The paper focuses on the toponyms which originate from the genetically isolated Nivkh (Ghilyak) language and examines the structural and semantic patterns of their derivation. The analysis of the material confirms that toponymy encodes important information about the ways in which indigenous peoples conceptualize the world and perceive their immediate ecological environment. Zhirmunsky Institute of Marine Biology of the Far Eastern Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences, Palchevskogo St., 17, Vladivostok 690059, Russia ABSTRACT: The understanding of the processes regulating the species richness and diversity in estuarine ecosystems is a fundamental problem of ecology. The Amur River estuary is charac- terised by high summer water temperatures (up to 20−21°C) anomalous for the cold-water north- western Pacific region. We hypothesized that the warm-water Amur estuary greatly influences the species richness of this cold-water region, contributing to the far northward spread of warm-water macrobenthic species. We investigated the fauna and distribution of bivalves in relation to environmental variables in the Amur estuary (Sakhalin Gulf, Amurskiy Liman, and northern Tatar Strait) on the basis of samples collected during 6 expeditions between 2003 and 2007. Most of the bivalve species found in the estuary (30 of 41) are marine species, which were recorded only in Sakhalin Gulf (Sea of Okhotsk) and the Tatar Strait (Sea of Japan). In the greater part of Amurskiy Liman, we found only brackish-water species Corbicula japonica, Corbula amurensis, and Macoma balthica, which were most abundant (mean ± SE: 74.6 ± 3.4% of the total biomass per sta- tion) among the macrobenthos. Qualitative (presence/absence of species) and quantitative (fourth-root transformed biomass) cluster and multidimensional scaling analyses revealed 6 dis- tinct areas in the estuary.

At the same time new lands were colonized and joined to Russia. h1 the xvn century a number of important di scoveries were made by first Russian travellers, mainly, cossack in the eastern and northern part of Asia The city of Yakutsk has become the center of main expectitions in the XVII century. The Russians began moving from Yakutsk to the south, north and east to find new lands. In 1639 a troop of cossacks headed by Ivan Moskvitin reached the Sea of Okhotsk by the Ulie river. On the sea beach near the mouth of the Ulie river there lived Iamuti (evenD related to tungus tribes. I.Moskvitin's troops discovered the sea. In the xvrn century Okhotsk and then the port became the strong base for important sea expeditions and new geographical discoveries.
