As part of its mission to reduce fatalities and injuries, since model year 2001 NHTSA has included rollover information as part of its NCAP ratings. One of the primary means of assessing rollover risk is the static stability factor (SSF), a measurement of a vehicle’s resistance to rollover. The higher the SSF, the lower the rollover risk.

Transportation Data Center Data Set Codebook NUMBER 2010-3 MARCH 2010 State of Washington 2007 The University of Michigan Transportation Research Institute THIS PAGE LEFT INTENTIONALLY BLANK STATE OF WASHINGTON 2007 MOTOR VEHICLE TRAFFIC ACCIDENTS INTRODUCTION This code book documents data sets describing motor vehicle accidents that occurred in the State of Washington during calendar year 2007. The data sets were developed by the Transportation Data Center at the University of Michigan’s Transportation Research Institute (UMTRI) from data supplied by the Washington State Patrol. The cooperation of that agency is gratefully acknowledged. The original data have been formatted into five distinct record types (i.e., Accident, Vehicle, Two-Vehicle, Occupant, and NonMotorist). A relational data set containing the original data is maintained by the Data Center, however, and other final data set configurations can be generated. The characteristics of the system data sets are as follows: 2007 WASHINGTON DATA SETS CATEGORY KEY VARIABLES CASES Accident WACØ7ACC 1-41 133,745 Occupant WACØ7OCC 1-41, 101-172, 201-209 332,892 Pedestrian WACØ7PED 1-41, 101-172, 301-319 3,278 Two-Vehicle WACØ7TVA 1-41, 101-172, 1101-1172 89,663 Vehicle WACØ7VEH 1-41, 101-172 248,547 The letter “C” in the data set descriptor represents “CENSUS” since these data sets describe all motor vehicle accidents that occurred in the state during calendar year 2007 that were recorded by the State Patrol. The code book itself is divided into four sections that document the accident, vehicle, occupant, and pedestrian records, Washington 2007 Introduction respectively. Univariate frequencies and frequency percentages displayed in each section were derived from the corresponding data set (i.e., accident frequencies from WACØ7ACC, occupant frequencies from WACØ7OCC, etc.).

The data sets were generated by the Transportation Data Center at the University of Michigan's Transportation Research Institute (UMTRI) from data provided by the North Carolina Department of Transportation. The cooperation of that agency is gratefully acknowledged. The data set supplied by the North Carolina Department of Transportation contains one record for each crash.
