  • 1 Fundamental Car Groups, 1981-2011
FUNDAMENTAL CAR GROUPS, 1981-2011 (Shared Body Platforms) 1. The first line of the definition assigns a five-digit number to the car group; the first two digits indicate the manufacturer, based on FARS codes (1=AMC, 6=Chrysler, 12=Ford, 18=GM, etc.); the last three digits are sequential and generally chronological for that manufacturer. 2. The second line assigns a name to the car group and gives the limits of the range of model years for the various make-models in the car group. Car groups are often named after the largest selling make-model with that body platform and/or the wheelbase of that platform (to the nearest inch). 3. The third line shows the wheelbase of the cars in that group, as derived from "New Car Specifications" in Automotive News or Ward’s Automotive Yearbook. 4. The remaining lines list the specific make-models included in the car group, including a five-digit make-model code, the make-model name (plus additional specifications such as "4-door" if not every car of that make-model is in that car group during the specified time period), a range of model years, and the VIN characters that identify specifically which cars belong to this car group (V3 is the 3rd character of the VIN, V34 is the 3rd and 4th character, etc.). As part of its mission to reduce fatalities and injuries, since model year 2001 NHTSA has included rollover information as part of its NCAP ratings. One of the primary means of assessing rollover risk is the static stability factor (SSF), a measurement of a vehicle’s resistance to rollover. The higher the SSF, the lower the rollover risk.

The data sets were developed by the Transportation Data Center at the University of Michigan’s Transportation Research Institute (UMTRI) from data supplied by the Washington State Patrol. The cooperation of that agency is gratefully acknowledged. The original data have been formatted into five distinct record types (i.e., Accident, Vehicle, Two-Vehicle, Occupant, and NonMotorist). A relational data set containing the original data is maintained by the Data Center, however, and other final data set configurations can be generated. The characteristics of the system data sets are as follows: 2007 WASHINGTON DATA SETS CATEGORY KEY VARIABLES CASES Accident WACØ7ACC 1-41 133,745 Occupant WACØ7OCC 1-41, 101-172, 201-209 332,892 Pedestrian WACØ7PED 1-41, 101-172, 301-319 3,278 Two-Vehicle WACØ7TVA 1-41, 101-172, 1101-1172 89,663 Vehicle WACØ7VEH 1-41, 101-172 248,547 The letter “C” in the data set descriptor represents “CENSUS” since these data sets describe all motor vehicle accidents that occurred in the state during calendar year 2007 that were recorded by the State Patrol. The code book itself is divided into four sections that document the accident, vehicle, occupant, and pedestrian records, Washington 2007 Introduction respectively. Univariate frequencies and frequency percentages displayed in each section were derived from the corresponding data set (i.e., accident frequencies from WACØ7ACC, occupant frequencies from WACØ7OCC, etc.).
